Vaccination of Ukrainian Refugees: Need for Urgent Action.

The unprovoked aggression of Russian military forces on Ukraine in February 2022 has caused a high influx of refugees, including children, to neighboring countries, particularly Poland. This caused additional pressures on the healthcare system and the need to meet challenges for public health, such as those related to infectious diseases. Here, we discuss the potential epidemiological risks associated with the war-induced influx of refugees (coronavirus disease 2019, measles, pertussis, tetanus, and poliomyelitis) and highlight the need for their swift management through institutional support,…

Sars-Cov-2 virus and vaccination; biological and statistical framework.

INTRODUCTION: The Development of the SARS-CoV-2 virus vaccine and its update on an ongoing pandemic is the first subject of the world health agenda. AREAS COVERED: First, we will scrutinize the biological features of the measles virus (MV), variola virus (smallpox virus), influenza virus, and their vaccines to compare them with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and vaccine. Next, we will discuss the statistical details of measuring the effectiveness of an improved vaccine. EXPERT OPINION: Amidst the pandemic, we ought to acknowledge our prior experiences with respiratory viruses and vaccines. In the plan…

Study of Particle Dispersion on One Bed Hospital using Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Increasing concerns about the spread of airborne disease in hospital such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), chickenpox, measles, tuberculosis and novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) have attracted public attention. A present study was carried out to look for the source of contamination (patient itself) and examine the route of contaminant transfer in the hospital. This article provides recommendation for future work to improve the yield and save the energy consumption simultaneously. The risk of airborne infection can be minimized in hospital wards by using a high air change rate.…

Live viral vaccines in transplanted patients.

Live attenuated viral vaccines (LAVV) have been used safely and with great success for decades to protect healthy patients against sometimes life-threatening diseases. The current recommendations usually contraindicate their use in immunocompromised hosts, despite an often increased risk for a severe presentation of disease. In this article, we review currently available LAVV, such as varicella-zoster, measles/mumps/rubella, influenza, polio, rotavirus, and yellow fever in patients with solid organ or haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The current paediatric and adult experience with pr…

Virus entry: old viruses, new receptors.

The long-sought entry receptors for rubella, sindbis and respiratory syncytial viruses (RV, SV and RSV), together with the missing measles virus (MV) receptor for infection of epithelial cells, were identified in 2011. These have been major developments in the field of virus entry. In addition, 2011 was rich in new information about the interactions of MV, RSV and phleboviruses with DC-SIGN during infection of dendritic cells, a crucial step allowing the virus to breach the epithelial barrier and gain access to the lymph nodes. This faciliates dissemination to susceptible tissues where it can …

[Current issues of epidemiology and vaccine prophylaxis of "children" airborne infections in the armies (Navy)].

It highlights the problems associated with the epidemiological situation of the morbidity of the population and the military personnel with infections, which recently were "infant"--measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria and other infections, controlled now by means of immunization. There is no alternative to the mass immunization of children and adolescents to achieve highly efficient vaccine-resistant sporadic incidence of these infections. However, amid the successes achieved, regular "grow-up" disease causes these infections spread vaccination for adults who are at risk. In military units the…

Fever and Rash: A Changing Landscape in the 21st Century.

Although "fever and rash" is a common complaint in the pediatric emergency department, most causes are benign. Of the more severe causes, several have been greatly reduced by vaccination programs. In addition, new vaccines such as those for invasive meningococcal disease hold promise for an even brighter future. Although meningococcemia remains an important concern when evaluating a child with fever and a rash, the resurgence of measles, the emergence of invasive group A streptococcal disease and antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, as well as the fear of agents of bioterrorism (anthrax…

Estimation of infectious disease parameters from serological survey data: the impact of regular epidemics.

Serological surveys are a useful source of information about epidemiological parameters for infectious diseases. In particular they may be u … pply the methods to data on mumps and rubella in the U.K. prior to the introduction of the combined measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine. We conclude that past epidemics have only a marginal effect on estimates, and that standard methods that do not adjust for regular epidemics are valid.

The fourth disease, 1900-2000.

Measles and scarlet fever were differentiated from one another in the 17th century. Rubella was accepted as the third distinct paediatric exanthem in 1881. Nil Filatow in 1885 and Clement Dukes in 1894 described two distinct forms of rubella, and in 1900 Dukes proposed that one of these forms of rubella was a separate entity which he called the fourth disease. For the past five decades, fourth disease has been considered a non-entity, perhaps a mild form of scarlet fever, but certainly not a distinct disease. In 1979 Keith Powell resurrected the idea of the fourth disease and argued that it wa…
