The issue of what starts the circadian clock ticking was addressed by studying the developmental appearance of the daily rhythm in the expression of two genes in the zebrafish pineal gland that are part of the circadian clock system. The present work studied in vivo neuroprotective effects of n-acetylserotonin (NAS), the immediate precursor of melatonin, on the dopaminergic system, in rats lesioned with the unilateral intrastriatal injection of the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). Pentobarbitone-induced hypnosis test was used as an animal model to explore the role of BR-16A, a polyherbal formulation in sleep.
