Prevalence and Predictive Factors of Rhabdomyolysis in COVID-19 Patients: A Cross-sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the present prospective observational study was to demonstrate the prevalence and predictive factors of rhabdomyolysis in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. METHODS: The study was performed on reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)-confirmed COVID-19 patients admitted to the emergency department between March 2020 and March 2021. Peak creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) levels were used to define rhabdomyolysis. A CPK level equal to or more than 1000 IU/L was defined as the presence of moderate to severe rhabdomyolysis. We developed a COVID-19-

Phase 2 study of preoperative chemotherapy with nab-paclitaxel and gemcitabine followed by chemoradiation for borderline resectable or node-positive pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant treatment with nab-paclitaxel and gemcitabine for potentially operable pancreatic adenocarcinoma has not been well studied in a prospective interventional trial and could down-stage tumors to achieve negative surgical margins. METHODS: A single-arm, open-label phase 2 trial (NCT02427841) enrolled patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma deemed to be borderline resectable or clinically node-positive from March 17, 2016 to October 5, 2019. Patients received preoperative gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 and nab-paclitaxel 125 mg/m2 on Days 1, 8, 15, every 28 days for two cycles foll

No Immunological Interference or Safety Concerns When Adjuvanted Recombinant Zoster Vaccine Is Coadministered With a Coronavirus Disease 2019 mRNA-1273 Booster Vaccine in Adults Aged 50 Years and Older: A Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: There is growing consensus that coronavirus disease 2019 booster vaccines may be coadministered with other age-appropriate vaccines. Adding to the limited available data supporting coadministration, especially with adjuvanted vaccines, could enhance vaccine coverage in adults. METHODS: In this phase 3, randomized, open-label study, eligible adults aged ≥50 years were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive mRNA-1273 (50 µg) booster vaccination and a first dose of recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV1) 2 weeks apart (Seq group) or concomitantly (Coad group). The second RZV dose (RZV2) was ad

Cognitive Dysfunction of Chikungunya Virus Infection in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Chikungunya fever is a disabling articular disease caused by chikungunya virus (CHIKV). In the past decade it has affected millions of people across America, Africa, Asia, and Europe, turning this infection into a public health concern. The acute phase of chikungunya infection is usually self-limiting, characterized by severe arthralgia, fever, chills, myalgia, headache, and rash. CHIKV neurovirulence is evident and seems to be higher among elders. Considering their susceptibility to cognitive decline and dementia, the aim of our study was to investigate whether CHIKV infection mig

Effectiveness of the third dose of BNT162b2 vaccine on neutralizing Omicron variant in the Japanese population.

INTRODUCTION: The vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 provides humoral immunity to fight COVID-19; however, the acquired immunity gradually declines. Booster vaccination restores reduced humoral immunity; however, its effect on newly emerging variants, such as the Omicron variant, is a concern. As the waves of COVID-19 cases and vaccine programs differ between countries, it is necessary to know the domestic effect of the booster. METHODS: Serum samples were obtained from healthcare workers (20-69 years old) in the Pfizer BNT162b2 vaccine program at the Toyama University Hospital 6 months after the sec
