We report a case of tinea corporis purpurea localized to a calf in a 36-year-old woman. The patient, who was also affected by mild superficial venous insufficiency of lower limbs, complained of intense pruritus. Microsporum canis was the aetiological agent. Clinically atypical varieties of tinea corporis were sometimes reported in the literature, particularly in HIV-positive patients, although they are uncommon in immunocompetent patients; in particular, tinea corporis purpurea is very rare.

A case of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis that had developed from the dorsum nasi to the left buccal region of a 65-year-old woman was treated with itraconazole 100 mg day-1. The lesion healed in 10 weeks after starting treatment leaving crusts, mild erythema and pigmentation, and the treatment was completed 16 weeks after the start of treatment. Neither adverse reactions nor abnormal clinical laboratory values were noted. Until the present time, 1 year and 2 months after the completion of treatment, no recurrence has been observed. Dermatophytosis was detected in 42% of 100 renal transplant recipients screened, of whom 17% had the infection for more than 1 year. Tinea cruris and tinea corporis were the common clinical types observed. Tinea unguium presented as proximal subungual white onychomycosis (PSWO) in 3% of patients. The lesions in the majority were non-inflammatory, scaly and without central clearance. The commonest isolate was Trichophyton rubrum.

Serial Candida albicans isolates from recurrent episodes of oropharyngeal candidosis (OPC) in four AIDS patients which became fluconazole-resistant during therapy were analysed by molecular methods. Cryptococcus laurentii is one of several non-neoformans cryptococci that have rarely been associated with human infection. The spectrum of clinical infection due to non-neoformans species ranges from skin lesions to fungaemia. Most cases of non-neoformans fungaemia have been nosocomially acquired and have been associated with indwelling intravascular catheters and neutropenia. Limited data on in vitro susceptibilities of non-neoformans cryptococci show these species to be more resistant to fluconazole and flucytosine than most Cr. neoformans. A total of 1704 basepairs of the 18S rDNA of Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii (HCD, strain CBS175.57) and H. capsulatum var. farciminosum (HCF, strain CBS478.64) were sequenced (EMBL accession no. Z75306 and no. Z75307). The 18S rDNA of HCD was 100% identical to a published sequence of H. capsulatum var. capsulatum (HCC). A universal PCR-assay for the detection of fungal DNA was compared with microscopy and culture for the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis using 78 samples from 42 patients. We present a case record of patients with kerion Celsi observed in the Clinic of Dermatology, University of Cagliari (Italy) from 1981 to 1995. Altogether, 31 children (18 male and 13 female) with an age range of 40 days to 12 years were studied. In all cases the lesions were confined to the scalp. During the clinical course of invasive candidosis, endogenous Candida endophthalmitis (ECE) is associated with a higher mortality. Terbinafine is the first orally active allylamine. Though it is available since several years, experience in children is rather limited. We report about five cases of dermatophytoses in children successfully treated with oral terbinafine. Five children (age: 10 month to 14 years) with a clinical and mycological diagnosis of dermatophytosis were treated with oral terbinafine according to their body weight: 250 mg/d (< 40 kg), 125 mg/d (20-40 kg) and 62.5 mg/d (< 20 kg). This is the report of a case of acute chromoblastomycosis observed in a 59-year-old immunosuppressed patient in Barinas, Barinas State, Venezuela, provoked by an insect bite in the right upper arm, apparently cured by extirpation. The efficacy and safety of two dos-ages of itraconazole in the treatment of tinea corporis or cruris were compared in a multicentre, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group trial. Fifty-four patients received itraconazole 100 mg daily for 2 weeks and 60 received itraconazole 200 mg daily for 1 week.
