Metronidazole prevention of serum liver enzyme abnormalities during total parenteral nutrition.

Abnormal serum liver enzymes are common in adults receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN). The mechanism(s) responsible for these changes is unclear. One hypothesis is that there is overgrowth of intestinal anaerobic bacteria with subsequent toxic effects on the liver from endotoxins and/or bile acids. A retrospective survey of patients receiving TPN was undertaken. The patients were divided into two matched groups. One group had received metronidazole, a drug that suppresses anaerobic bacteria, while the other group had not. The administration of metronidazole during TPN was associated wit

Some experimental approaches to the study of nutrition and parasitic infection.

Two experimental models to examine the relationship between host nutrition and parasitic infection are considered. Moniliformis dubius, an acanthocephalan parasite of the laboratory rat, is dependent on the type and amount of host dietary carbohydrate for growth and reproduction. Starch, glucose, fructose, and mannose in host diets support parasite growth and development, but much lower dietary amounts of starch, fructose, and mannose are needed compared to free glucose. The pig-Ascaris suum relationship is considered as a model for human ascariasis. Experimental Ascaris infections in pigs res

Loss of tRNA uridine thiolation affects mRNA translation, protein production, and metabolite accumulation in Arabidopsis.

It is well established in yeast and animal system that the level of uridine thiolation at position 34 of tRNA anticodon loops can impact the decoding potential of the corresponding codons. Using Arabidopsis thaliana, we confirm that the ability of the plant ribosome to decode AAA, GAA, and CAA codons is impaired when this thiol group is lost, leading to a reduction in protein production, especially for genes enriched in these codons. Interestingly, we observed that loss of tRNA thiolation results in variations in the levels of numerous proteins involved in sulfur-compound metabolism and amino

Primary Care of Patients With Cancer.

Family physicians are uniquely positioned to provide comprehensive care of patients across the cancer care continuum. Their longitudinal relationship with patients allows them to address cancer-related issues in addition to chronic disease management, preventive care, psychosocial needs, and caregiver support. Maintaining awareness of a patient's cancer diagnosis and related treatment is essential for evaluating new symptoms, recognizing treatment-related adverse effects, and identifying potential oncologic emergencies. Cancer treatment often complicates management of existing chronic illnesse

Structure-resolved tannin interactions in food systems: nutritional effects, digestion, and applications.

Tannins are structurally diverse food polyphenols whose behavior cannot be predicted from total tannin content alone. This review uses tannin class, linkage chemistry, degree-of-polymerization metrics, galloylation and hydroxylation, conformational flexibility, and oxidation state as a common framework for interpreting interactions with food proteins, digestive enzymes, starch, plant cell-wall polysaccharides, minerals, and salivary constituents. These descriptors explain differences in digestibility, mineral bioaccessibility, astringency, interfacial behavior, and crosslinking. Many apparentl

The Gut-Brain-Skin Axis: Systemic Effects of Functional Ingredients in Healthy Skin Aging.

Interactions among the gut, brain, and skin are increasingly understood as a systemic regulatory network connecting intestinal activity, neuroimmune communication, and cutaneous homeostasis. Microbiota-derived metabolites, immune mediators, and neuroendocrine pathways can influence central nervous system activity and subsequently regulate skin homeostasis. This review summarizes current evidence on how functional ingredients modulate the gut-brain-skin axis in the context of aging and skin health. Polyphenols, probiotics, and omega-3 fatty acids appear to act through overlapping biological rou

Choline counteracts pregnancy undernutrition-associated colitis in sheep by restoring microbiota driven bile acid metabolism.

High-fertility sheep experience undernutrition during late gestation, which induces body metabolic disruption and intestinal inflammation. Crucially, the gut microbiota-bile acid axis is a promising intestinal inflammation target, but how choline modulates this axis in livestock enteritis is unknown. This study investigated choline's protective mechanisms against undernutrition-induced intestinal inflammation in sheep, focusing on gut microbiota and bile acid regulation. Choline consistently alleviates colitis severity, restores epithelial barrier integrity, and suppresses intestinal inflammat

Altered eating experience during GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy: a sensory-liking-wanting framework for food preference and nutritional behaviour.

Eating experience is shaped not only by oral sensory input, but also by hedonic evaluation, interoceptive state, and cue-driven motivation. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), widely used for obesity treatment, offer a clinically relevant model for examining how these processes interact during appetite regulation. Some patients receiving GLP-1RAs report that food tastes different, is less enjoyable, or becomes less tempting, yet these experiences are often grouped together as "taste changes." This review argues that such reports should be interpreted through a sensory-liking-

Exploring the differential diagnosis of generalized diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is the most common chronic complication of diabetes mellitus and is frequently assumed to be the sole cause of neuropathic symptoms in patients with diabetes. This diagnostic simplification may lead to misdiagnosis, delayed treatment of alternative etiologies, and preventable neurological disability. Accurate differentiation between DPN and non-diabetic neuropathies remains a major clinical challenge. AREAS COVERED: This narrative review examines the principal differential diagnoses of generalized DPN, integrating clinical presentation, disea

Circulating immune and biochemical markers predict tumor response to immunotherapy in advanced melanoma and lung cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral immune biomarkers provide a minimally invasive approach to monitor systemic responses to cancer immunotherapy, yet their predictive value in real-world longitudinal settings remains incompletely defined. METHODS: We conducted a prospective longitudinal study in patients with advanced melanoma and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors. Thirteen circulating immune, inflammatory, and nutritional biomarkers were analyzed across treatment cycles, and their association with radiological response over time was assessed using Bayesian ordin

Primary diffuse malignant epithelioid peritoneal mesothelioma of the greater omentum in an asbestos-naive patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Malignant mesothelioma is a rare malignant neoplasm of mesothelial origin, with primary involvement of the greater omentum being exceptionally uncommon. Nonspecific clinical manifestations often lead to misdiagnosis, and cases without asbestos exposure further increase diagnostic complexity. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old male without asbestos exposure was admitted for recurrent diarrhea (>1 year), abdominal distension (>10 days), and unintentional weight loss (5 kg in 3 months). Physical examination revealed a 20-cm firm abdominal mass, and abdominal contrast-enhanced CT showed

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) in Ultra-Trail Running: Implications for Performance, Injury, and Long-Term Health.

Ultra-trail running has experienced substantial global growth, yet the nutritional and physiological consequences of prolonged participation remain incompletely understood. Relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs), resulting from problematic low energy availability (LEA), has emerged as an important concern within endurance sports; however, evidence specific to ultra-trail athletes remains fragmented. This narrative review synthesises current evidence relating to the development, manifestations, and consequences of REDs in ultra-trail running. Available literature suggests that the combinati

Nitrogen inputs and mowing do not alter N:P stoichiometry in grassland insect herbivores.

Nitrogen (N) inputs result in stoichiometric imbalances between N and phosphorus (P) in soils and plants. There are increasing concerns about the transmission of such stoichiometric imbalances to higher trophic levels through the bottom-up effect. However, most studies focus on the species-level responses, leaving community-level responses largely unexplored. We examined the responses of N:P stoichiometry in plant community, dominant insect groups (Arcypteridae, Cicadellidae, and Lygaeidae), and insect community in both mown and unmown grasslands at the end of 8-year N addition. Nitrogen addit

Diet, the Gut Microbiome, and Mental Health: Mechanistic Perspectives.

The microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA) represents a dynamic, bidirectional communication network linking the gut microbiome with central nervous system function through neural, immune, metabolic, and endocrine pathways. Emerging clinical, observational, and preclinical evidence suggests that special and restrictive dietary patterns-including Mediterranean, ketogenic, vegan, gluten-free, low-FODMAP, sugar-restricted, dairy-free diets, and intermittent fasting (IF)-can substantially modulate the gut microbiota, potentially influencing mental health outcomes. In this review, we first outline the fu

Dietary and nutritional supplementation strategies for table tennis athletes: a mini-review.

Table tennis (TT) has been defined as a fast and explosive aerobic sport. Athletes are required to move expeditiously around the table to catch the ball and produce a strong return. The body utilizes glycogen and fat stores as the primary energy sources. Furthermore, this sport demands that athletes possess not only explosive power, speed and endurance, but also anaerobic capacity. Consequently, these qualities are contingent on a combination of physical, technical and psychological attributes. TT demands a high level of concentration and technical proficiency from athletes, encompassing eleme
