Force-induced Adrb2 in periodontal ligament cells promotes tooth movement.

The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) regulates bone resorption through β-2 adrenergic receptor (Adrb2). In orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), mechanical force induces and regulates alveolar bone remodeling. Compressive force-associated osteoclast differentiation and alveolar bone resorption are the rate-limiting steps of tooth movement. However, whether mechanical force can activate Adrb2 and thus contribute to OTM remains unknown. In this study, orthodontic nickel-titanium springs were applied to the upper first molars of rats and Adrb1/2(-/-) mice to confirm the role of SNS and Adrb2 in OTM.

Physical properties of root cementum: part 21. Extent of root resorption after the application of 2.5° and 15° tips for 4 weeks: a microcomputed tomography study.

INTRODUCTION: Microcomputed tomography offers a unique opportunity to accurately examine orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption. The aims of this study were to quantify, in 3 dimensions, the amount of root resorption caused by placing heavy and light distal root tipping forces on premolars and to compare the prevalence of root resorption in different areas of the tooth. METHODS: Thirty maxillary first premolars from 15 patients who were to have these teeth extracted as part of their orthodontic treatment were selected for this study. Each tooth in the same patient was randomly c

Rapid maxillary anterior teeth retraction en masse by bone compression: a canine model.

OBJECTIVE: The present study sought to establish an animal model to study the feasibility and safety of rapid retraction of maxillary anterior teeth en masse aided by alveolar surgery in order to reduce orthodontic treatment time. METHOD: Extraction of the maxillary canine and alveolar surgery were performed on twelve adult beagle dogs. After that, the custom-made tooth-borne distraction devices were placed on beagles' teeth. Nine of the dogs were applied compression at 0.5 mm/d for 12 days continuously. The other three received no force as the control group. The animals were killed in 1, 14,

Mini-implant anchorage for a skeletal class II malocclusion with missing mandibular incisors: a case report.

This case report describes the treatment of an adult female with a severe Class II malocclusion and congenitally missing mandibular incisors. It was decided to extract the maxillary first premolars and use mini-implants for en masse retraction of the maxillary anterior teeth. More than 13 mm of maxillary incisor retraction was obtained, with little change in the mandibular incisor inclination. The patient's facial esthetics showed dramatic improvement. The upper and lower lips were retracted by 6 mm and 7 mm, respectively. This helped reduce the mentalis strain and improve chin projection. In

Treatment of a severe Class III skeletal discrepancy at an appropriate age.

The 13-year-old female patient presented for correction of a severe Class III malocclusion with a Class III skeletal pattern. This was considered an appropriate age for treatment as earlier treatment may have been subject to relapse because significant facial growth may have occurred after treatment, and because treatment at a later age may have required orthognathic surgery. Initially, maxillary expansion was provided to widen the maxilla and to free the circum-maxillary sutures. Maxillary protraction headgear was worn to perform sagittal skeletal improvement. Fixed orthodontic appliances wer

The Enigma behind Pituitary and Sella Turcica.

The pituitary gland's role as a functional matrix for sella turcica has not been suggested in orthodontic literature. This paper is an attempt to correlate the role of pituitary gland in the development of sella turcica. A case report of dwarfism associated with hypopituitarism is presented to highlight the above hypothesis.
