How fathers and mothers make their children laugh: Associations with the security of parent-child attachment relationships.

OBJECTIVES: Bowlby (1969/1982) described an infant's smile and pleasant vocalizations as attachment behaviors. However, most research on the formation of attachment relationships centers on the role of the caregiver's response to child distress, neglecting the role of behaviors that promote proximity in a positive context. This study aimed to 1) explore fathers' and mothers' laughter-eliciting behaviors and children's laughter using a newly developed coding instrument and 2) explore associations between these behaviors, children's laughter, and child attachment security. DESIGN: A sample of 1

In their eyes: parental experiences navigating pediatric glaucoma diagnosis, treatment, and care in Turkey - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric glaucoma is a rare but vision-threatening condition requiring complex, lifelong management. While clinical outcomes have been well-documented, little is known about the lived experiences of families navigating this condition, particularly in middle-income countries. This study aimed to explore how parents in Turkey experience and navigate the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of a child with pediatric glaucoma. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative exploratory study using semi-structured interviews with parents of children diagnosed with pediatric glaucoma in Turkey.

Snack Confusion: Parents perceive baby, child and adult snacks as more similar than they actually are.

The consumption of commercial snacks for infants and toddlers has risen significantly, yet limited research has explored how parents evaluate these products across age groups. This study examined parental perceptions of snacks marketed for babies (<36 months), children (commercial snacks with child-appealing packaging), and adults, focusing on attributes such as healthiness, appropriateness, and parental willingness to buy. It also assessed the relationship between parents' knowledge of the European Union (EU) baby food regulations and their purchasing intentions. An online survey was conducte

Understanding parental decisions to decline or delay infant RSV immunisation, nirsevimab, in Western Australia in 2024.

PURPOSE: In 2024, the government of Western Australia introduced 'nirsevimab', a monoclonal antibody offering protection from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), for eligible infants. This study explores why parents of infants who were eligible to receive nirsevimab opted to decline or delay the immunisation. METHODS: Semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted with eleven parents to understand rationales for their decline or delay decision, their knowledge and understanding of RSV infection, and their broader attitudes to immunisation. Interview responses were inductively and deduc

Paternal and Maternal Exposures to Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Child Behavioral Difficulties: A Parental Comparison Study.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread environmental pollutants with documented developmental toxicity. Prior research of prenatal PFAS exposure and offspring neurodevelopment did not consider the possible influence from paternal exposure. Using the INUENDO cohort, we studied 334 father-mother-singleton triads enrolled from antenatal clinics in Greenland, Poland, and Ukraine. We measured five PFAS in parental serum samples collected around the 31 weeks of gestation. We assessed child behavioral difficulties at ages 5-9 years by the parent-rated Strength and Difficulties Ques

Development of a Preference Weighting System for the Parent-Proxy Child Chronic Cough Quality-of-Life Instrument.

OBJECTIVES: Cough in children is the most common reason for seeking healthcare in Australia. When chronic, it is associated with decreased quality-of-life in parents/carers and significant societal costs. Despite this, the spillover effect of chronic cough on parents/carers is seldom accounted for in economic evaluations of interventions. We aimed to develop a new method of estimating spillover health utility in this population in Australia. METHODS: We conducted a discrete choice experiment on hypothetical health states based on the Parent-Proxy Child Cough Quality of Life questionnaire. The

Parental awareness and practices regarding paracetamol use in children: A cross-sectional study from Pakistan.

Paracetamol is the one of the most widely administered drug as an analgesic and antipyretic due to its efficacy, safety, and over-the-counter (OTC) nature and is present in various pharmaceutical forms. Paracetamol usage in children is a global concern yet understudied in Pakistan. The present study was conducted to assess parental awareness regarding paracetamol usage and toxicity, highlighting critical public health risks and informing policy interventions aimed at lowering medication-associated toxicity in low-resource settings. This cross-sectional study aimed at assessing parental awarene

Parental kynurenine 3-monooxygenase genotype in mice directs sex-specific behavioral outcomes in offspring.

BACKGROUND: Disruptions in brain development can impact behavioral traits and increase the risk of neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, often in sex-specific ways. Dysregulation of the kynurenine pathway (KP) of tryptophan metabolism has been implicated in cognitive and neurodevelopmental disorders. Increased brain kynurenic acid (KYNA), a neuroactive metabolite implicated in cognition and sleep homeostasis, and variations in the Kmo gene, which encodes kynurenine 3-monooxygenase (K

Newborn screening programs promote vaccine acceptance among parents in Turkey: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Newborn screening and childhood immunization are among the most successful public health initiatives. Turkey has a high vaccination coverage (95-99%), but a recent decline is concerning. Vaccine hesitancy (VH) is a growing global issue, identified by the WHO as a major public health threat. Given that VH may correlate with attitudes toward other health practices, we explored whether early engagement with the health system via newborn screening influences childhood vaccine acceptance. Although these programs are implemented separately but concurrently as part of the national healthc

Seeing, Being Seen and Being Able to See Dyslexia in English Schools: Parent and Teacher Perspectives.

In this study, we present an analysis of interviews with parents and teachers in order to understand the lived experience of families and teachers trying to support children with written language difficulties. Within these accounts, the value of a dyslexia diagnosis is examined in practice. Nineteen parents and 20 educators were interviewed, including four parents who completed additional interviews 4 years after their original accounts. Our analysis indicated that dyslexia is rendered largely invisible in our sample of English schools, with staff frequently reluctant to fully acknowledge it.

Giving Voice to Children's Vocal Health: Assessment of Parents' Knowledge Before and After the Online Course.

INTRODUCTION: Dysphonia in children may arise from exposure to inefficient vocal behaviors in primary social environments, particularly within the family context, and it is common for affected children to remain unaware of their vocal impairment. However, there are no studies focused on guiding parents or caregivers on how to deal with this issue, aiming for the success of therapeutic prognosis or the prevention of voice disorders in children. Furthermore, distance education has become a favorable resource currently. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the change in parents' knowledge before and after com

A Sunny Disposition and a Big Heart: Thematic Analysis of Parent-Reported Socio-Emotional Strengths in Dyslexia.

Children with dyslexia have persistent and well-characterised reading difficulties but may also have less well-known socio-emotional abilities. Socio-emotional abilities in dyslexia could be leveraged in remediation efforts to improve outcomes, including resilience. Our aim was to characterise these socio-emotional abilities from parents' perspectives, to inform strength-based curricula. We analysed 97 parent responses to an open-ended question on the behavioural and emotional strengths of their child with dyslexia using a reflexive thematic analysis approach. We identified five themes, includ
