Overlap of pathology in paralytic rabies and axonal Guillain-Barre syndrome.

We describe clinical and pathological features of a case of paralytic rabies with acute axonal neuropathy that closely resembled axonal Guillain-Barre syndrome. This case emphasizes that there is overlap of both clinical and pathological features in paralytic rabies and axonal Guillain-Barre syndrome. These findings raise the possibility that infectious and autoimmune etiologies can lead to similar morphological changes in the nerves.

Sympathetic pathology evidenced by hand thermal anomalies in carpal tunnel syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify sympathetic pathology in carpal tunnel syndrome and the usefulness of digital infrared thermography as a diagnostic aid. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 38 clinically diagnosed carpal tunnel syndrome hands from 30 patients (confirmed by the standard nerve conduction studies) and 41 hands from 22 healthy volunteers (the hands having current finger inflammation were excluded) were studied. A series of hand infrared photos of each subject were taken and stored by using the technique of digital infrared thermography. We studied the infrared pictures and measured the temperatures of fi

Anti-estrogen prevents xenoestrogen-induced testicular pathology of eelpout (Zoarces viviparus).

Estrogenic alkylphenols have been shown to affect the reproductive system of male fish causing induction of vitellogenin synthesis and altered testis structure. However, it is still unknown whether the histopathological effects on the testes is mediated by the estrogen receptor or if it represent general toxicopathological effects. In the present study, the effects of different concentrations of the estrogenic chemical 4-tert-octylphenol on vitellogenin (Vtg) synthesis and testicular structure were investigated in the eelpout Zoarces viviparus during spermatogenesis. Adult male eelpout were ex

[Urachal pathology: an overview review and report of three clinical cases].

With the use of these two clinical cases (cyst and urachal adenocarcinoma) we did an overview of the urachal pathology. The urachus cyst is usually asyntomathic, it's detected randomly when we do other diagnostic tests or when we have any complications. The urachal adenocarcinoma is a rare pathology, it usually exhibit hematuria and we need to follow the same diagnostic tools as we use in vesical tumors (cystoscopy and transurethral vesical resection). Adenocarcinoma of the dome of the bladder is the main differential diagnosis. Partial cystectomy is the first choice treatment. Quimiotheraphy

Interaction of microbiology and pathology in women undergoing investigations for infertility.

BACKGROUND: Cases of endometriosis with no tubal damage are associated with infertility, suggesting an immunological rather than mechanical barrier to reproduction. Laparoscopy and falloposcopy results of clinically asymptomatic women undergoing investigation of infertility were correlated with the outcomes of microbiological screening for Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Mycoplasma hominis, ureaplasma species, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis and Chlamydia pneumoniae. METHODS: A total of 44 women presenting to a hospital IVF service for laparoscopic or laparoscopic/

The pathology of extracranial scalp and skull masses in young children.

OBJECTIVE: Extracranial subcutaneous masses involving the scalp and/or skull in young children are uncommon lesions that get excised by the neurosurgeon. Although the most common reported lesion is the dermoid cyst, our experience suggests that the spectrum of pathology in these lesions can present diagnostic challenges to the pathologist. MATERIAL: We reviewed 30 consecutive extracranial masses from 29 patients between July 1998 and June 2003. METHOD: Hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections were reviewed in all cases, and immunohistochemistry was performed in select cases. RESULTS: Twenty-t

[Fibromatosis of the breast: clinical and pathology analysis of two cases].

Fibromatosis of the breast is an uncommon benign disease that mimics carcinoma clinically as well as radiographically. Its microscopic diagnosis among spindle cell tumors is fundamental, especially on frozen sections. We report two cases of mammary fibromatosis observed in young woman (26 and 31 years old). The two were clinically and mammographically suspect. Diagnosis was made on frozen sections and confirmed on paraffin embedded specimen. The lesions are characterized by spindle cell proliferation of variable cellularity and collagenization. Few mitotic figures were present in one case. Sev

Pathology of an atypical strain of Pasteurella gallinarum infection in chickens.

Gross and microscopic pathology caused by an atypical strain of Pasteurella gallinarum (Fresno strain) was compared in chickens with that caused by the American Type Culture Collection type strain. Ten 21-day-old broiler chickens were inoculated intranasally with 10(7) colony forming units or intramuscularly with 10(5) colony forming units of either strain. The birds were killed 7 days later, and gross and microscopic lesions were studied. Grossly, there was extensive white discoloration of pectoral muscles with mild fibrinous exudate in birds inoculated intramuscularly with the Fresno strain

[Pathology of the spleen in children--current possibilities of surgical treatment].

In the submitted paper the authors review the contemporary state of surgery of the spleen in child age. Surgical treatment is used most frequently in injuries of the spleen, in portal hypertension and in haematological diseases. In a group of patients during the last decade efforts to preserve the spleen are emphasized and experience is reported with the use of therapeutic procedures. The authors emphasize that splenectomy in children should be an exceptional operation.

[Genetics and molecular pathology of anti-Mullerian hormone and its receptor].

Anti-müllerian hormone (AMH), a glycoprotein produced by immature Sertoli cells, is responsible in male fetuses for regression of müllerian ducts, the anlagen of Fallopian tubes and uterus in females. AMH binds to a specific type II serine-threonine kinase transmembrane receptor (AMHR-II). A known pathology of AMH and its receptor is the persistent müllerian ducts syndrome (PMDS), a peculiar case of male pseudohermaphroditism, presenting with retention of tubes and uterus in otherwise normally virilized boys, and transmitted with an autosomic recessive mode. Genetic studies on 76 families of p

Clinical findings in sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease correlate with thalamic pathology.

The pathogenesis underlying the typical findings in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) such as periodic EEG changes or myoclonus is not fully understood. The thalamus possesses a high density of inhibitory neurones and serves as a crucial pacemaker of rhythmic EEG activity. As inhibitory neurones expressing parvalbumin (PV) are reduced in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus in sporadic CJD (sCJD), we studied the distribution and number of PV-immunoreactive neurones in sCJD thalami in order to determine whether damage to them could account for certain clinical findings. Cerebral Whipple's disease with a stroke-like presentation and cerebrovascular pathology.

Although neurological symptoms are common in Whipple's disease, patients rarely have a purely neurological presentation and involvement restricted to the central nervous system is uncommon. A 39 year old woman presented with a meningoencephalitic illness, which responded to penicillin. Eleven months later she developed recurrent stroke-like episodes. Patchy enhancing meningeal, cortical, and subcortical lesions thought to be vascular in origin developed within nine days of the onset of symptoms. No evidence was found of a cardiovascular source of emboli, vasculitis, or thrombophilic condition.
