[Intellectual and motor development of extremely low birth weight (≤1000 g) children in the 7th year of life; a multicenter, cross-sectional study of children born in the Malopolska voivodship between 2002 and 2004].

INTRODUCTION: A better understanding of the developmental problems in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) preterm infants may enhance their chances of proper adaptation to their environment and make it possible to retrospectively assess perinatal and neonatal methods of treatment. The aim of the study was to evaluate the cognitive and motor development of ELBW children born from 2002 to 2004 in the 7th year of life. Based on these results and perinatal mortality data, it was established what chance the children have to live free of severe complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two hundred and fou

Insurance and altruism values of a novel treatment for hypophosphatasia: a stated preference survey in the United States.

AIMS: To estimate the insurance and altruism values of a novel hypothetical treatment on survival gains for perinatal-/infantile-onset hypophosphatasia (HPP), a rare, severe, inherited disease, which-if untreated-leads to early mortality in children. METHODS: Residents of the United States aged 21-54 years from the general population participated in a web-based, cross-sectional, prospective, stated preference survey. The insurance value module included respondents planning to have children, whereas the altruism value module included respondents not planning to have children in the future. A m

Development of antenatal risk prediction model for preeclampsia with severe features in Lagos, Nigeria (PreSev study): protocol of a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia with severe features is a major contributor to maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despite improvements in obstetric care, early identification of women at highest risk remains limited, and existing prediction tools lack contextual specificity for African populations. OBJECTIVE: This study describes the protocol for the PreSev Study, which aims to develop and validate a machine-learning risk prediction model for preeclampsia with severe features among pregnant women in Lagos, Nigeria. METHODS: This

Optimizing developmental outcomes in premature infants through a multidisciplinary approach to care.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth remains the leading risk factor for perinatal mortality and morbidity. Infants born preterm miss critical periods of development, placing them at increased risk for a range of neurodevelopmental, motor, and sensory complications. These complex health outcomes are further compounded by biological, behavioral, and social factors, with socioeconomically disadvantaged populations disproportionally affected. As rates of preterm birth rise, and survival improves at increasingly earlier gestational ages, the demand for comprehensive and accessible care for this high-risk pop

Protective effect of annexin A5 against preeclampsia-like phenotypes in mice through the NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammasome pathway.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Preeclampsia (PE) is a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, yet effective targeted therapies remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of annexin A5 (ANX A5) in PE and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms based on metabolomic profiling. METHODS: A PE-like mouse model was established by intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 20 μg/kg/day) from gestational day (GD) 7.5 to 17.5, followed by intravenous administration of ANX A5 (50 μg/kg/day) in the treatment group. Is the Availability of Immediate Inpatient Postpartum Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) Associated with a Decrease in Rapid Repeat Pregnancy?

INTRODUCTION: Immediate postpartum long-acting reversible contraception (IPP-LARC) after delivery may decrease rapid repeat pregnancy (RRP). RRP is associated with preterm birth, small for gestational age, low birth weight, and infant/maternal mortality. In April 2017, the Ohio legislature passed SB 332, mandating immediate postpartum LARC coverage. Later that year, our hospital made the IPP-LARC Nexplanon (and not intrauterine devices [IUDs]) available to all delivering patients. This study aimed to see if SB 332 is associated with decreased RRP. METHODS: Using electronic health record and s

Brain metabolomic profiling reveals ischemia-dominant disruption of metabolic pathways and tissue homeostasis in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.

In neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI), a common form of perinatal brain damage associated with mortality and neurological disability, the disruption of oxygen and nutrient supply severely impacts brain metabolism. Though therapeutic hypothermia reduces cerebral metabolic rate and improves outcomes, disruption of oxidative metabolism compromising neuronal survival often persists. The complex cerebral metabolic shifts in HIBI remain poorly understood. We directly analyzed the metabolome (LC-MS) of neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI)-affected brain tissue to gain further insight into HIBI p

Outcomes Associated With Illicit Fentanyl Exposure During Pregnancy: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Illicitly manufactured fentanyl (IMF) is the predominant opioid in the US drug supply and is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality during pregnancy. While prenatal opioid exposure is an established risk factor for neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS), the differential effects of IMF vs other opioids on outcomes are largely unknown. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the associations between prenatal IMF exposure and fetal, perinatal, and neonatal health outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of pregnant women with opioid use disorder (OUD) and the

Application of single-cell RNA sequencing in preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-specific multisystem disorder and a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite the widely accepted two-stage model involving placental dysfunction and maternal systemic inflammation, the precise cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying its pathogenesis remain incompletely understood. In recent years, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has emerged as a transformative technology capable of resolving transcriptional heterogeneity at unprecedented resolution, offering new insights into the complex cellular landscape o

The Involvement of HIF-1α and BDNF in Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Insult to the Cerebral Germinal Matrix.

Perinatal asphyxia is a major contributor to neonatal morbidity and mortality, particularly among preterm infants, whose brains are highly vulnerable to hypoxic-ischemic injury. The germinal matrix (GM), owing to its vascular fragility and high metabolic demand, is especially susceptible in this context. This study analyzed 118 germinal matrix samples from neonates, stratified into three groups according to gestational age-Extremely Preterm (EP), Late Preterm (LP), and Term (T)-to investigate the immunopositivity of hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) and brain-derived neurotrophic facto
