BACKGROUND: Placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT) is a rare neoplasm of intermediate trophoblastic cells of the placenta. There is a wide range of biologic behavior, with metastases occurring in about 15% of cases. Cases with metastases have all presented with abnormal vaginal bleeding or gynecological symptoms.
METHODS: We describe a 31-year-old G3P3003 woman who presented with several alopecic patches resembling alopecia areata, which on biopsy proved to be metastatic, previously unsuspected, PSTT.

Within a group of preeclamptic women we found severe histologic placental pathology with functional relevance when both the uteroplacental and fetoplacental flow velocity waveforms showed elevated resistance indices. These pathological findings were a reduced decidual area, infarction and villus maturation failures with a high rate of intrauterine growth retardation, acidosis and premature delivery. In cases with normal flow velocity waveforms these pathologic findings were much rarer although the patients were preeclamptic, too.

The purpose of this investigation was to establish and characterize a cell line derived from a rat choriocarcinoma and to evaluate the usefulness of the cell line as an in vitro model for studying trophoblast cell differentiation. A cell line was generated from choriocarcinoma explants and named Rcho-1. The cell line consisted of a mixture of cell types, including small cells growing in clusters and giant cells possessing very large nuclei. This characteristic morphology was maintained through at least 23 passages and in a series of clonal cell lines isolated from the parent Rcho-1 cell line.

Human normal dura mater containing arachnoid villi were examined for their expression of glutathione S-transferase placental type (GST-pi), a detoxifying enzyme, using an immunohistochemical method. All of the arachnoid villi and arachnoid cells in five normal cases were found to have expression of GST-pi, although no positive reaction for the enzyme was present in other tissues of the dura mater. In a total of 301 placental biopsies in the second and third trimesters, 225 were performed because of suspicious ultrasonographic findings. In this group there was a high rate of aneuploidies (20%). As opposed to the alternative methods for rapid karyotyping, placental biopsies can easily be performed even in pregnancies with abnormal amounts of amniotic fluid.
