Combining OSTA and BMR to predict osteoporosis in Chinese population.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a debilitating bone disease that significantly contributes to disability and a loss of autonomy among older adults. This study aimed to characterize osteoporosis and explore the feasibility of combining OSTA and BMR for osteoporosis prediction. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 1435 participants (1300 women and 135 men) was conducted. Spearman's correlation, simple linear regression analyses, and multiple linear regression models were utilized to investigate the association between OSTA, BMR, and bone mineral density (BMD). Furthermore, the efficacy of i

Cancer treatment-induced bone loss.

Cancer treatment-induced bone loss (CTBL) is associated with anti-tumor treatments, including endocrine therapies, chemotherapeutic treatments, radiotherapy, glucocorticoids, and tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Osteoporosis, characterized by the loss of bone mass, can increase the risk of fractures, leading to mortality and long-term disability, even after cancer remission. Cancer and osteoporosis have marked clinical and pathogenetic similarities. Both have a multifactorial etiology, affect the geriatric population, and markedly influence quality of life. Lifestyle management, including calcium a

Optimizing Musculoskeletal Management Following Spinal Cord Injury: Best Practices in Practice Management.

Musculoskeletal pain occurs in 50% to 81% of people living with spinal cord injury. Pain can have a significantly limiting impact. Pain can lead to decreased mobility, endurance, social participation, and depression. Additionally, many people living with spinal cord injury (SCI) rely on their upper body for ADLs (activities of daily living) which may result in decreased independence in cases of severe pain. Musculoskeletal impairments associated with spinal cord injury include decreased muscle mass and bone density, spasticity, contractures, as well as overuse injuries in muscles, tendons, and

A review of loiasis and its vectors in Gabon.

Loiasis colloquially known as tropical eye worm is a neglected tropical helminthic disease that affects the rural poor population of Gabon. A systematic review of fifty-one documents (forty-five peer reviewed papers and six dissertations) over four decades has documented many knowledge gaps on loiasis and its vectors. Higher prevalence and high microfilaremia is typical wherever Chrysops vectors occur. The two main vectors were C. silacea and C. dimidiata along with the savanna species C. longicornis . The two main vectors were only caught around forested national parks at low density (<1 Chry

Mathematical modeling of cholera dynamics with intrinsic growth considering constant interventions.

A mathematical model that describes the dynamics of bacterium vibrio cholera within a fixed population considering intrinsic bacteria growth, therapeutic treatment, sanitation and vaccination rates is developed. The developed mathematical model is validated against real cholera data. A sensitivity analysis of some of the model parameters is also conducted. The intervention rates are found to be very important parameters in reducing the values of the basic reproduction number. The existence and stability of equilibrium solutions to the mathematical model are also carried out using analytical me

Revisiting Screening in Women With a Family History of Breast Cancer.

Women with a family history (FH) of breast cancer and without known genetic susceptibility represent a unique population whose lifetime probability of developing breast cancer varies widely depending on familial factors, breast density, and the risk assessment tool used. Recently updated guidelines from the American College of Radiology recommend supplemental annual screening with contrast-enhanced MRI or contrast-enhanced mammography for women with an FH who are high risk (≥20% lifetime risk) or have dense breasts. To date, most screening studies addressing outcomes in women with FH have larg

Magnetic Polaron States in Photoluminescent Carbon Dots Enable Hydrogen Peroxide Photoproduction.

Photoactivation of aspartic acid-based carbon dots (Asp-CDs) induces the generation of spin-separated species, including electron/hole (e- /h+ ) polarons and spin-coupled triplet states, as uniquely confirmed by the light-induced electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The relative population of the e- /h+ pairs and triplet species depends on the solvent polarity, featuring a substantial stabilization of the triplet state in a non-polar environment (benzene). The electronic properties of the photoexcited Asp-CDs emerge from their spatial organization being interpreted as multi-layer asse

Metabolic reprogramming of Pseudomonas aeruginosa by phage-based quorum sensing modulation.

The Pseudomonas quinolone signal (PQS) is a multifunctional quorum sensing molecule of key importance to P. aeruginosa. Here, we report that the lytic Pseudomonas bacterial virus LUZ19 targets this population density-dependent signaling system by expressing quorum sensing targeting protein (Qst) early during infection. We demonstrate that Qst interacts with PqsD, a key host quinolone signal biosynthesis pathway enzyme, resulting in decreased levels of PQS and its precursor 2-heptyl-4(1H)-quinolone. The lack of a functional PqsD enzyme impairs LUZ19 infection but is restored by external supplem

Impaired bone health as a co-morbidity of epilepsy.

Increasing number of studies shows significant reductions in bone mineral density in patients with epilepsy treated with enzyme-inducing anti-seizure medications (EIASM), valproic acid, and newer anti-seizure medications (ASM). ASM seems to be a specific risk factor for the development of osteoporosis affecting 11%-31% of patients with epilepsy and leads to 2 to 6 times increased risk of fractures compared to the background population. Treatment with ASM clearly contributes to epilepsy-associated bone disease. Yet, the exact pathophysiological mechanism has not been established; however, sever

Linking temporal-parietal junction to internet addiction tendency: Moderating effect of critical thinking.

BACKGROUNDS AND AIMS: Internet addiction (IA) is a common internet-related addictive behavior. An enormous amount of previous research on IA disorders (IADs) have paid attention to the neural basis of abnormalities, while few studies have elucidated the neural distinctions of IA tendency in general population. METHODS: The current study examined the neural basis of IA tendency combining with voxel-based morphometry (VBM) from the average student body (N = 244). RESULTS: As the results presented, the gray matter density (GMD) of the left temporal-parietal junction (TPJ) was positively correla

Cyanobacteria and microalgae bioactive compounds in skin-ageing: potential to restore extracellular matrix filling and overcome hyperpigmentation.

As the largest organ in human body, skin acts as a physicochemical barrier, offering protection against harmful environmental stressors, such as chemicals, pathogens, temperature and radiation. Nonetheless, skins prominence goes further, with a significant psychosocial role in an increasingly ageing population. Prompted by consumers' concern regarding skincare, cosmetic industry has been developing new formulas capable of lessening the most visible signs of ageing, including reduction in skin density and elasticity, wrinkling and hyperpigmentation. Allied to skincare is the rising importance s

Dermatologic aspects of bed bug epidemic: an atlas of differential diagnosis.

Bed bug infestation rate has gone through an unforeseen increase in the past decades worldwide. Their resurgence is a consequence of numerous factors, including growing population density, increased international travel and the spread of insecticide resistance. Bed bug infestation is often revealed by skin symptoms appearing after their bite in sensitive patients. Medical professionals encountering patients with bed bug bites have responsibility for recognizing the condition and for instructing patients about the necessary measures for eradication. Setting the correct diagnosis, however, is no

A theoretical study on the photodegradation mechanism of the endocrine disrupting chemical p-nonylphenol induced by OH in water.

Nonylphenol (NP) has attracted significant attention because of its widespread environmental presence, toxicity, and pseudo-estrogen properties. Photolysis is the main degradation pathway of many organic pollutants in water. In this study, the photodegradation mechanism of p-nonylphenol (p-NP) induced by OH in water was investigated using the density functional theory (DFT). Based on the calculations of charges using natural population analysis (NPA), the reaction of OH with NP included the carbon addition of a benzene ring and the hydrogen extraction of a phenolic hydroxyl group. The structur

Investigating the nexus among sulfur dioxide emission, energy consumption, and economic growth: empirical evidence from Pakistan.

Developing countries like Pakistan majorly depend on fossil fuels for achieving higher economic growth but have sloppy environmental rules and regulations in order to attract foreign direct investment (FDI). As a result, energy consumption is considered the primary cause of environmental degradation. Besides CO2 emission, environmental degradation is also associated with emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2). The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among SO2 emissions, energy consumption, economic growth, and FDI in Pakistan. By applying the 3SLS method, study has estimated th

Clinical application of ultrashort echo-time MRI for lung pathologies in children.

Lung magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered to be challenging, because the low proton density of the tissue, fast signal decay, and respiratory artefacts hamper adequate image quality. MRI of the lungs and thorax is increasingly used in the paediatric population, because it is a radiation-free alternative to chest CT. Recently, ultrashort echo-time (UTE) sequences have been introduced into clinical MRI protocols, in order to improve the contrast-to-noise ratio due to reduced susceptibility artefacts and to depict structural alterations comparable to CT. The purpose of this review is to

The Effect of Ambient Environmental Conditions on COVID-19 Mortality: A Systematic Review.

Weather conditions may have an impact on SARS-CoV-2 virus transmission, as has been shown for seasonal influenza. Virus transmission most likely favors low temperature and low humidity conditions. This systematic review aimed to collect evidence on the impact of temperature and humidity on COVID-19 mortality. This review was registered with PROSPERO (registration no. CRD42020196055). We searched the Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane COVID-19 databases for observational epidemiological studies. Two independent reviewers screened the title/abstracts and full texts of the studies. Two reviewers also p

Denser brain capillary network with preserved pericytes in Alzheimer's disease.

Pericytes are vascular mural cells that surround capillaries of the central nervous system (CNS). They are crucial for brain development and contribute to CNS homeostasis by regulating blood-brain barrier function and cerebral blood flow. It has been suggested that pericytes are lost in Alzheimer's disease (AD), implicating this cell type in disease pathology. Here, we have employed state-of-the-art stereological morphometry techniques as well as tissue clearing and two-photon imaging to assess the distribution of pericytes in two independent cohorts of AD (n = 16 and 13) and non-demented cont

Being elderly is not a contraindication of parathyroidectomy for renal hyperparathyroidism and chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) has more influence in the elderly. Parathyroidectomy remains the golden standard for this situation but has tended to be excluded for older patients for many reasons. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the surgery in the elderly population. METHODS: 156 patients were included and arranged into younger (≦65 years of age, n = 139) and elderly (>65 years of age, n = 17) groups. The change of bone mineral density (BMD) data, recovery potential {[(postoperative BMD) - (preoperative BMD)]/(preoperative BMD)

Peripheral bone density measurement: An interdisciplinary initiative for improving health outcomes for people with learning disabilities.

Challenges exist in respect of people with intellectual disabilities who, with the increasing life expectancy, have a growing risk of age-related degenerative conditions. Changes in bone health are associated with increasing age and the bone health of people who have intellectual disabilities is well documented in the literature as being poor in comparison to the general population. A heel scan clinic was set up in an intellectual disability service as a service improvement initiative. There were 12 females and 17 males scanned using a heel scanner. Only 3 (10.3%) people with intellectual disa
