Investigation of bias in the automated assessment of school violence.

OBJECTIVES: Natural language processing and machine learning have the potential to lead to biased predictions. We designed a novel Automated RIsk Assessment (ARIA) machine learning algorithm that assesses risk of violence and aggression in adolescents using natural language processing of transcribed student interviews. This work evaluated the possible sources of bias in the study design and the algorithm, tested how much of a prediction was explained by demographic covariates, and investigated the misclassifications based on demographic variables. METHODS: We recruited students 10-18 years of

Predicting Flow Rate Escalation for Pediatric Patients on High Flow Nasal Cannula Using Machine Learning.

Background: High flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is commonly used as non-invasive respiratory support in critically ill children. There are limited data to inform consensus on optimal device parameters, determinants of successful patient response, and indications for escalation of support. Clinical scores, such as the respiratory rate-oxygenation (ROX) index, have been described as a means to predict HFNC non-response, but are limited to evaluating for escalations to invasive mechanical ventilation (MV). In the presence of apparent HFNC non-response, a clinician may choose to increase the HFNC flow

Effectiveness of the CANRISK tool in the identification of dysglycemia in a Canadian South Asian Population.

INTRODUCTION: South Asians have a higher than average risk of developing type 2 diabetes. We ascertained the effectiveness of CANRISK, an existing diabetes risk assessment tool, examining its sensitivity and specificity at two different predetermined scoring cut-off points comparing those participants under the age of 40 and those 40 and over. We examined the predictive ability of a model based on CANRISK variables, comparing ethno-specific body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) cut-off points with the original BMI and WC cut-off points to see if predictive ability could be improve

Semi-supervised Double Deep Learning Temporal Risk Prediction (SeDDLeR) with Electronic Health Records.

BACKGROUND: Risk prediction plays a crucial role in planning for prevention, monitoring, and treatment. Electronic Health Records (EHRs) offer an expansive repository of temporal medical data encompassing both risk factors and outcome indicators essential for effective risk prediction. However, challenges emerge due to the lack of readily available gold-standard outcomes and the complex effects of various risk factors. Compounding these challenges are the false positives in diagnosis codes, and formidable task of pinpointing the onset timing in annotations. OBJECTIVE: We develop a Semi-superv

Beyond discrimination: A comparison of calibration methods and clinical usefulness of predictive models of readmission risk.

BACKGROUND: Prior to implementing predictive models in novel settings, analyses of calibration and clinical usefulness remain as important as discrimination, but they are not frequently discussed. Calibration is a model's reflection of actual outcome prevalence in its predictions. Clinical usefulness refers to the utilities, costs, and harms of using a predictive model in practice. A decision analytic approach to calibrating and selecting an optimal intervention threshold may help maximize the impact of readmission risk and other preventive interventions. OBJECTIVES: To select a pragmatic mea

[Artificial intelligence in the management of stroke].

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has generated considerable expectations for improving stroke management. In this work, we present current AI applications for stroke prevention, triage, and treatment selection during the acute phase. We then discuss the potential value of AI in predicting neurological recovery. Currently, only the detection of atrial fibrillation and the identification of large-vessel occlusions on brain imaging have been validated. Nevertheless, recent advances are opening up new perspectives for using AI algorithms in stroke care.

Facial Implants in Male Rejuvenation.

Many different methods achieve male facial augmentation. Arranged from shorter- to longer-term results, these methods include filler, fat/tissue grafting, fat/tissue transposition, and alloplastic implants. This study solely reviews allografts, which provide the most predictable hard-tissue augmentation. An array of alloplasts will be discussed in this study including chin, cheek, mandibular angle, frontal, and temporal implants. The most common and severe complications will also be explored with preventative and treatment algorithms.

Video imaging--a computer facilitated approach to communication and planning in orthognathic surgery.

A case report is presented in order to illustrate the benefits of computerized video imaging in orthognathic surgery. It is suggested that superimposition of the cephalogram on the video image is helpful in treatment planning and in communication with the patient. Computerized video imaging techniques help clinicians and patients discuss the aesthetic impact of orthognathic surgery. The superimposition of the cephalogram and profile image, coupled with algorithmic predictions, allow the clinician to plan the surgery to closely match the desired result. This paper presents the planning and coun

The Capabilities of Multimodal Magnetic Resonance Morphometry to Diagnose Complex Cases of Focal Cortical Dysplasia (Pilot Study).

UNLABELLED: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is a leading cause of pharmacoresistant epilepsy. Up to 30-50% of cases remain MRI-negative on routine visual assessment. MR morphometry improves dysplasia detection; however, conventional approaches are limited to the analysis of T1-weighted images and only two features (gray-white matter blurring and cortical thickness abnormalities). The aim of the study was to compare the diagnostic efficiency of the conventional T1-based two-feature algorithm and a multimodal multi-feature algorithm incorporating machine learning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The stud

Patient-specific air puff-induced loading using machine learning.

Introduction: The air puff test is a contactless tonometry test used to measure the intraocular pressure and the cornea's biomechanical properties. Limitations that most challenge the accuracy of the estimation of the corneal material and the intraocular pressure are the strong intercorrelation between the intraocular pressure and the corneal parameters, either the material properties that can change from one person to another because of age or the geometry parameters like central corneal thickness. This influence produces inaccuracies in the corneal deformation parameters while extracting the

Putting equity first: reorienting artificial intelligence for population-level postpartum depression prevention.

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects 10-20% of new mothers globally, yet detection and treatment rates remain low, particularly in underserved populations. Artificial intelligence (AI)-here spanning supervised machine-learning prediction, natural-language and acoustic analysis, and generative conversational agents-is increasingly promoted as a solution, from risk prediction to chatbot-delivered therapy. Drawing on selected evidence from clinical informatics, digital mental health, public-health ethics, and implementation science, we argue that although AI may genuinely expand reach, its current

Marker Prioritization With Different Fine Mapping Strategies Improves Genomic Selection Performance.

Feature reduction of genetic markers and its impact on genomic selection has been studied extensively. Prior information borrowed from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) can improve genomic selection accuracy. However, the effect of integration of posterior inclusion probability (PIP) information from fine mapping algorithm and linkage disequilibrium (LD) on genomic selection remains less studied. Here, three marker prioritization strategies-genome-wide fine-mapping (GWFM), LD pruning (LDFM), and GWAS-informed LD pruning ((GWAS + LD)FM)-were evaluated, using Bayesian fine-mapping integrate

Biomarker-guided immunotherapy in gastric cancer: current insights and future perspectives.

Gastric and gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma (GC) is a biologically challenging malignancy associated with suboptimal clinical outcomes due to limited effective treatment options. The recent incorporation of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) into therapeutic algorithms has improved the clinical prospects of subsets of GC patients. However, responses to anti-PD-1/PD-L1 agents remain highly heterogeneous, with only some patients deriving long-term benefits. This variability highlights the importance of identifying optimal biomarkers to enhance patient selection, thereby enabling tailor

Cost-efficient and Accurate Risk Assessment Instruments in Type 2 Diabetics with Greatest Risk for Cardiovascular Disease.

Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death among individuals with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). To better direct preventative care, many risk assessment tools have been developed to determine whether T2DM patients will develop cardiovascular disease. This paper analyzes three specific tools: UKPDS (United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study), the Framingham Risk Score, and the QRISK (QRESEARCH cardiovascular risk algorithm) calculator, with a focus on their predictive utility and limitations in clinical practice. All these models were designed using a variety of patient informat

Artificial intelligence-assisted technology to reduce turnaround time for rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) is a fundamental tool for disease detection; however, the relatively large number of amplification cycles can restrict its responsiveness in time-critical situations such as infectious disease outbreaks. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers the potential to enable earlier interpretation of amplification curves and thereby accelerate qPCR-based diagnosis, particularly for COVID-19. METHODS: A quick qPCR (q-qPCR) algorithm based on a bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) network is introduced to predict fluorescence signals from e
