[Laser in contemporary dentistry].

In the 30 years of laser history the oral cavity application has always played an important role. In the laboratory diagnostics the analysis of the saliva, tissues and hard dental tissues is performed by laser. In the clinical diagnostics the laser is used for examining the caries, dental matter, in orthodontics, in the surgical analysis of splanchnocranium and the teeth. The photodynamic treatment involves the diagnostic and therapeutic use of the lasers in the management of oral cavity cancers. The soft laser therapy is widely applied in diseases of the oral mucosa, parodontal and pain syndr

Paediatric haematopoietic stem cell transplantation research priorities: Results from an international multi-stakeholder priority setting partnership.

Co-designed research in paediatric HSCT is limited. We sought to determine research priorities which represent the shared priorities of patients, parents, carers and healthcare professionals (HCP) within Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. An international, multiphase priority-setting methodology was implemented in partnership with the James Lind Alliance and delivered over an 18-month period. Part 1: an international scoping survey asked respondents to submit their research uncertainties related to paediatric HSCT. Part 2: summarising and evidence-checking the subm

Screening for Fibrosis in Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease: Evidence, Challenges, and the Role of Imaging-From the AJR Special Series on Screening.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) affects 40% of the world's population. Despite an association with increased cardiovascular morbidity, MASLD usually does not lead to liver-related adverse outcomes until fibrosis develops. MASLD with clinically significant fibrosis (histologic fibrosis stage ≤2) is associated with poorer prognosis and helps guide management, including specialty care referral. Among adults with MASLD, those with noncirrhotic clinically significant fibrosis (stage 2 or 3) may be eligible for pharmacotherapy to prevent progression to cirrhosis; tho

Data-Informed Intuition in Hepatology: Integrating Evidence, Context, and Clinical Reasoning.

Artificial intelligence and data-driven models are changing hepatology, but expert clinical judgment remains essential. Liver diseases are complex and evolve over time, requiring reasoning that links numerical data with clinical context. We propose data-informed intuition (DII), a conceptual framework bridging evidence-based medicine with clinical experience and reflective reasoning. Instead of presenting a validated prediction model, it proposes DII as an integrative scaffold for clinical reasoning that can be examined and revised. DII is viewed as a trainable skill that improves with data fe

Viral triggers of Guillain-Barré syndrome: implications for laboratory diagnostics.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a leading cause of acquired acute neuromuscular paralysis and is an immune-mediated disorder of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Accumulating evidence indi-cates that GBS is often preceded by infectious events that trigger autoimmune responses through mechanisms such as molecular mimicry and autoantibody production. Campylobacter jejuni remains the most common bacterial agent, but viral pathogens also contribute to the development of GBS. This review summarizes the current evidence regarding viruses as triggers of GBS, including herpes-viruses, hepatotropic

Safety concerns associated with various types of statins: a disproportionality analysis of the FAERS database.

INTRODUCTION: Statins' widespread use in cardiovascular disease management raises concerns about adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Comparative ADR profiles across different statin types remain lacking, necessitating further investigation to refine patient management. AREAS COVERED: The FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database (2004Q1-2024Q2) was leveraged to extract healthcare professional reports where statins were the 'principal suspected' causative agent. A systematic analysis of ADRs for statins (Atorvastatin, Simvastatin, Rosuvastatin, Pravastatin, Lovastatin, Fluvastatin, Pitava

Psychological capital and psychological well-being among caregivers of individuals with alcohol use disorders: a mixed-methods public health study incorporating ayurvedic perspectives.

In India's mental health service delivery, caregivers' needs are often overlooked despite the substantial burden and stress they experience, particularly when caring for individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUD), which in turn affects patient recovery. Ayurveda conceptualizes treatment as resting on four sub-pillars, one of which is the caregiver, and emphasizes specific caregiver qualities, called "Parichara" qualities, essential for favorable treatment outcomes. These include Buddhiman, Daksha, Anurakta, and Shuchi. These Ayurvedic concepts align with psychological capital (PsyCap), and t

Breast density reporting in Aotearoa New Zealand: policy imperatives and research priorities.

Breast density influences both breast cancer risk and the sensitivity of mammographic screening. Several countries routinely notify women of their breast density in community-based screening programmes and provide guidance directly or through general practitioners. In contrast, BreastScreen Aotearoa (BSA) does not currently notify breast density to women, resulting in limited awareness and raising concerns relating to equitable care, patient autonomy in decision making, trust in health professionals and uncertainty regarding clinical pathways. Although the recent Health New Zealand - Te Whatu

Paediatric urolithiasis: Medical & surgical management & sophistication.

Success and safety of endoscopic ureterolithotripsy (EUL) in pediatric patients has been studied by Khudaybergenov et al in a recent retrospective study. The findings support EUL as a first-line treatment, with careful planning needed for younger children. Urolithiasis is a well-known condition. It can affect any part of the urinary tract. It is quite rare in children (1%-7% of all urinary stones occur during childhood). However, its increasing incidence over last several decades is a cause of concern. Childhood urinary lithiasis is related to genetic, climatic, dietary, and socioeconomic fact

Team-based care and the role of the lipid specialist in obesity management.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a complex, chronic disease influenced by genetic, environmental, behavioral, and psychosocial factors. While lifestyle modification remains the foundation of treatment, it is often insufficient for sustained weight loss and cardiometabolic risk reduction. The rising prevalence of obesity and its link to comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease necessitate a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to care. OBJECTIVES: To correlate the pathophysiology of adiposopathic atherogenic dyslipidemia with the

Achilles tendinopathy.

Achilles tendon pathologies are prevalent, impacting ~6% of the general population and up to 50% of elite endurance runners over their lifetimes. These conditions substantially affect quality of life and work productivity, leading to substantial societal costs. Achilles tendinopathy (AT) is a condition marked by localized pain and functional impairment related to mechanical loading. AT can considerably impair participation and potentially also performance in sports and daily activities. The aetiology of AT is multifactorial and repetitive overloading of the tendon is often observed as the inci
