OBJECTIVE: To report the use of Gianturco coils in non-surgical closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA).
DESIGN: Retrospective review of patient data.
SETTING: Two specialist paediatric cardiology units in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Cape Town, South Africa.
PATIENTS: Thirty children (median age 36 months, weight 12.5 kg) and one adult (24 years old) with PDA underwent attempted transcatheter closure of the duct between August 1994 and February 1995.

In 24 patients with irreversible lagophthalmos, gold weights ranging from 0.8 to 1.7 g were implanted in the upper lids, under local anaesthesia. With a follow-up period ranging from 2 1/2 to 4 years (average, 3 years), the results of the implantation were gratifying in 23 patients. While corneal irritation and epiphora was reduced and the loaded upper eyelid allowed patients to blink voluntarily.

The case of a 56-yr-old patient with polycythemia vera who was initially seen with jaundice is reported. Compression of the common bile duct by choledochal varices was found to be the cause of the obstructive jaundice. This compression was successfully treated with placement of a plastic endoprosthesis across the stenosis during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. The significance of choledochal varices in the evaluation of obstructive jaundice is emphasized.

Between 1974 and 1989, 49 out of 83 children with gastroschisis or omphalocele underwent duraplastic enlargement of the anterior abdominal wall. The solvent dried dura proved to be the most useful material, which could be left in place even after a scar had formed. Abdominal complications depend on preexisting damage of the intestine and on the intraabdominal pressure resulting from closure. Long-term disturbances of the gastrointestinal and abdominal wall function are comparable to the results of other reconstructive methods.
