Transplacental permeability of heavy metals in relation to newborn sex - evidence from the neurodevelopment project.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of dyslipidemia in high-risk patients specifies a low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol <100 mg/dL. The efficacy of higher-potency regimens in clinical practice in patients who have not achieved their LDL goal on generic therapy is not well characterized. The primary objective of this study was to determine the LDL-lowering efficacy of higher-potency strategies (ezetimibe/simvastatin, rosuvastatin, and atorvastatin) in high-risk patients who were switched from simvastatin therapy. Secondary objectives were to evaluate patient adherence to these therapies, determine the

Sex differences in outcomes after mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke in the 'real world': protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis study.

INTRODUCTION: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) had been regarded as the first-line therapy for acute ischaemic stroke patients. The sex differences in post-MT treatment outcomes were analysed by randomised controlled trial (RCT) studies with inconsistent conclusions. We suggest the results from the real-world data may differ from RCT containing studies. Therefore, the sex difference in non-clinical trial populations needs to be clarified. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In order to obtain relative studies comprehensively, we will search the main document databases, consisting of Web of Science, Medline in

Adrenal function testing in dialysis patients - a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Secondary adrenal insufficiency is a frequent issue in patients with renal replacement therapy. There are concerns about metabolism and clearance for adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol in addition to hemoconcentration as confounding factors during hemodialysis (HD). Therefore, ACTH testing is currently performed before or in between HD sessions. This review of the literature aims to evaluate the current evidence for validity of testing for adrenal insufficiency in patients on chronic renal replacement therapy. METHODS: A literature search of PubMed database for interv

Regional patterns of genetic diversity in swine influenza A viruses in the United States from 2010 to 2016.

BACKGROUND: Regular spatial and temporal analyses of the genetic diversity and evolutionary patterns of influenza A virus (IAV) in swine inform control efforts and improve animal health. Initiated in 2009, the USDA passively surveils IAV in U.S. swine, with a focus on subtyping clinical respiratory submissions, sequencing the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) genes at a minimum, and sharing these data publicly. OBJECTIVES: In this study, our goal was to quantify and describe regional and national patterns in the genetic diversity and evolution of IAV in U.S. swine from 2010 to 2016.

Nosocomial infection prevalence in patients undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO): protocol for a point prevalence study across Australia and New Zealand.

INTRODUCTION: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) provides cardiac and/or respiratory support when other therapies fail. Nosocomial infection is reported in up to 64% of patients receiving ECMO and increases morbidity and mortality. These patients are at high risk of infection due, in part, to the multiple invasive devices required in their management, the largest being the cannulae through which ECMO is delivered. Prevalence of nosocomial infection in ECMO patients, including ECMO cannula-related infection, is not well described across Australia and New Zealand. METHODS AND ANALYSIS:
