Predicting falls in adults with multiple sclerosis using patient-reported measures: Are perceptions of dual-tasking missing?

BACKGROUND: Mobility challenges and cognitive impairments prominent in adults with multiple sclerosis (MS) significantly increase the risk of falling. Examining perceptions of how the simultaneous performance of completing motor and cognitive tasks impacts fall risk may have clinical utility. The purpose of this study was to identify the most significant self-reported predictors of falling including perceived dual-tasking. METHODS: Participants included 79 individuals with MS were surveyed and reported their fall history over the previous 3 months and completed the Multiple Sclerosis Walking

Analysis of the interaction between personality dysfunction and traits in the statistical prediction of physical aggression: Results from outpatient and community samples.

The Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.) and the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (11th ed.; ICD-11) are, respectively, hybrid categorical-dimensional and dimensional frameworks for personality disorders (PDs). Both models emphasize personality dysfunction and personality traits. Previous studies investigating the links between the AMPD and ICD-11, and self-reported physical aggression have mostly focused on traits and did not take into account the potential intera

Autologous intralesional platelet rich plasma improves melasma.

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is an upcoming interventional therapy for the treatment of melasma. Its efficacy is due to the multiple growth factors present in it which decrease melanogenesis by various signal transduction pathways. The present study evaluated the efficacy of PRP as a standalone agent in treatment of melasma. This is an open labeled prospective trial. Forty patients were given intralesional PRP at once monthly interval. Three such PRP sessions were carried out and the patients were followed up for 3 months. Assessment was done by calculating the modified melasma area severity ind

Case Study of a Rare Genetic Disorder: Congenital Insensitivity to Pain With Anhidrosis.

A rare autosomal recessive disorder, congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis, is characterised by the congenital lack of pain sensation. Other characteristic symptoms include no sweating, recurrent episodes of hyperpyrexia, retardation of mental abilities and self-mutilating behaviour. Herein, we present a case of a one-year-old male child who initially presented with self-bites on the tongue and then multiple fractures with no report of pain or crying, which initially indicated carelessness of parents. Based on further in-depth assessment indicating a family history of similar weak b

A psychometric evaluation of the Posttraumatic Cognitions Inventory with Veterans seeking treatment following military trauma exposure.

Trauma-related beliefs have salient relationships to the development and maintenance of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following stress exposure. The Posttraumatic Cognitions Inventory (PTCI) has the potential to be a standard assessment of this critical construct. However, some critical aspects of validity and reliability appear to vary by population. To date, the PTCI has not been psychometrically evaluated for use with military-specific traumas such as combat and military sexual trauma (MST). Based on exploratory and confirmatory analyses with 949 Veterans seeking trauma-focused treat

Patient reported outcomes in the assessment of premature ejaculation.

The term 'Patient Reported Outcome', abbreviated as PRO, was introduced by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which proposed guidance on the development and validation of PROs. Previously PROs were known as self-report diaries, event-logs, self-administered questionnaires, and clinician administered rating scales. PROs seek to capture the subjective perceptions of patients and/or partner's related to their specific symptoms, degree of bother, efficacy of a medication or psychotherapy intervention, and quality of life issues related to a specific condition. This article reviews the essen

Experience of negative emotions in Parkinson's disease: An fMRI investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Amygdala abnormalities have been discussed as a possible mechanism underlying reduced reactivity to negative stimuli in Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: The present investigation used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in order to test this hypothesis. We compared brain activation of 17 nondepressed and nondemented PD patients with 22 healthy controls during the elicitation of negative affective states. The patients suffered from moderate motor symptoms for an average of 75 months and had stopped their antiparkinson medication 10-12h prior to the fMRI testing. All parti

Application of classification based cognitive functional therapy for a patient with lumbar spinal stenosis: A case report.

This report describes the case of a 52 year old male administrative assistant presenting with symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Despite patho-anatomical considerations, the patient's pain related functional behaviour, mal-adapted presentation, motor control strategies, incorrect belief system, and faulty cognition of associating disc healing with a lordotic posture adversely contributed to his presentation. With limited specific guidelines in the literature for this specific lumbar spine condition, the patient response during the assessment guided the intervention. Treatment that incor
