BACKGROUND: The use of plate fixation to treat displaced midshaft clavicular fractures in adults reduces complications and residual shoulder disability. New features of the precontoured locking plates have been shown to reduce the need for hardware removal in adults. There is a lack of studies evaluating surgical fixation of displaced clavicular fractures with precontoured plates in adolescents. The aim of this study was to report the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a consecutive group of patients with stage 1 disease at a time closest to two years after primary surgery. This is a prospective study of 107 repairs of obstetric brachial plexus palsy carried out between January 1990 and December 1999. The results in 100 children are presented. Lesions of the spinal accessory nerve are usually iatrogenic, especially after lymph node extirpation on the neck. Between 1994 and 2003, 31 patients were operated on in the Neurosurgical Department of the University of Ulm for iatrogenic lesions of the XIth cranial nerve.
