Test-retest validation of a cranial deformity index in unilateral coronal craniosynostosis.

Unilateral coronal craniosynostosis (UCS) affects many infants resulting in abnormalities affecting the forehead and orbits. As a result, the deformity caused by UCS is very noticeable and there are several surgical treatment options available to normalize the head shape. However, there is a lack of consistently used outcome measures, resulting in difficulty assessing surgical outcomes and on-going debate over optimal treatments. Current techniques to quantify deformity in UCS are cumbersome, provide limited information, or are based on subjective assessments. In this study, a cranial deformit

CT of Normal Developmental and Variant Anatomy of the Pediatric Skull: Distinguishing Trauma from Normality.

The use of computed tomography (CT) in clinical practice has been increasing rapidly, with the number of CT examinations performed in adults and children rising by 10% per year in England. Because the radiology community strives to reduce the radiation dose associated with pediatric examinations, external factors, including guidelines for pediatric head injury, are raising expectations for use of cranial CT in the pediatric population. Thus, radiologists are increasingly likely to encounter pediatric head CT examinations in daily practice. The variable appearance of cranial sutures at differen

Clinical analysis and comparative study of facial symmetry of three-dimensional skull models.

Facial symmetry is a critical determinant in maxillofacial reconstruction. To establish an ideal midsagittal plane (MSP) for three-dimensional (3D) skull model in the diagnosis and treatment of maxillofacial reconstructing and unilateral maxillofacial lesions, the maxillofacial spiral computed tomography data from 51 patients with normal craniofacial anatomy in the Department of Stomatology, The General Hospital of Western Theater Command, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, were collected to performed 3D reconstruction. Every 3D skull model established three common MSPs: N-ANS-PNS, N-ANS-S, and

Variability of characteristics of cranial projectile trauma in skeletal material.

In cranial firearm trauma, where soft tissues have decomposed, determining the manner of death can pose difficultly for a forensic anthropologist. Detailed analysis of skeletal wounds may lead to reconstruction of the events surrounding death, however considerable research has been conducted on soft tissue details and less has focused on skeletal wounds alone. Macroscopic descriptive observations were carried out on thirteen skulls from the Hamman-Todd Human Osteological Collection at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Ohio which had documented cranial projectile trauma to analyse wound

3D Printing as a Teaching Tool in Veterinary Medicine: Feline Ocular Model for Ultrasound Training.

A three-dimensional (3D) clinical simulation model was developed for ocular ultrasonography training, and its pedagogical potential was evaluated. Model design was based on computed tomography data of feline skulls, which were processed and segmented using specialized 3D modeling software. During this process, Standard Tessellation Language (STL) files were produced, corresponding to the three main model components: a feline skull and two eyeballs, one representing normal anatomy and the other simulating a total retinal detachment. All components were printed using a stereolithography printer.

Fully Automated AI-Based Digital Workflow for Mirroring of Healthy and Defective Craniofacial Models.

The accurate reconstruction of craniofacial defects requires the precise segmentation and mirroring of healthy anatomy. Conventional workflows rely on manual interaction, making them time-consuming and subject to operator variability. This study developed and validated a fully automated digital pipeline that integrates deep learning-based segmentation with algorithmic mirroring for craniofacial reconstruction. A total of 388 cranial CT scans were used to train a three-dimensional nnU-Net model for skull and mandible segmentation. A Principal Component Analysis-Iterative Closest Point (PCA-ICP)

Optical Neuronavigation without Rigid Head Fixation During Awake Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Optical neuronavigation without rigid pin fixation of the head may lead to inaccurate results because of the patient's movements during awake surgery. In this study, we report our results using a skull-mounted reference array for optical tracking in patients undergoing awake craniotomy for eloquent gliomas. METHODS: Between March 2013 and December 2014, 18 consecutive patients (10 men, 8 women) with frontotemporal (n = 16) or frontoparietal (perirolandic; n = 2) lesions underwent awake craniotomy without rigid pin fixation. All patients had a skull-mounted reference array for optic

Radio frequency hearing: electrostrictive detection and bone conduction.

A hearing aid patented by C. R. Schafer and supposedly based on detection of an amplitude-modulated carrier wave in the auditory cortex was re-examined. It is shown here that the hearing aid actually works by bone conduction of sound. It is concluded that detection of the modulation signal occurs by electrical nonlinearities and electrostriction in the bones of the face and skull.

True petroclival meningiomas: results of surgical management.

OBJECT: The relentless natural progression of petroclival meningiomas mandates their treatment. The management of these tumors, however, is challenging. Among the issues debated are goals of treatment, outcomes, and quality of life, appropriate extent of surgical removal, the role of skull base approaches, and the efficacy of combined decompressive surgery and radiosurgery. The authors report on the outcome in a series of patients treated with the goal of total removal. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective analysis of 64 cases of petroclival meningiomas operated on by the senior aut

Biomechanical approach for the assessment of contacts with deformable objects.

Forensic and biomechanical assessment in case of blunt force trauma can be a challenging task especially when deformable striking objects are used. Evaluations solely based on empirical knowledge can lead to misjudgments. Semi-quantitative and quantitative investigations give the forensic assessment a scientific basis comprising experimental and calculation methods. Based on a real case where a car wheel was used as a striking object, our work presents a simple test setup for contact force estimation in head contacts with deformable contact partners. Our approach combines experimental measurem

The Hemodynamic Trap: Fetal-Type Posterior Cerebral Artery and Occult PICA Aneurysms.

Isolated intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is an uncommon presentation of ruptured aneurysms, often misdiagnosed as hypertensive hemorrhage. Distal posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysms can easily be missed on computed tomography angiography (CTA) due to their small size and skull-base artifacts. A 48-year-old female presented with a thunderclap headache. Initial imaging showed isolated IVH without subarachnoid hemorrhage. A primary CTA was read as negative, noting only a suspected plaque near the foramen magnum. However, multiformat reconstructions revealed a right-sided fetal

Impact of endoscopy and related technologies on indications for transsphenoidal pituitary surgery for growth hormone-producing pituitary neuroendocrine tumors in McCune-Albright syndrome: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is frequently associated with growth hormone (GH)-producing pituitary neuroendocrine tumors. However, transsphenoidal surgery is considered difficult because of skull base fibrous dysplasia, making complete tumor removal and endocrine remission challenging. OBSERVATIONS: Eighteen years earlier, a 31-year-old woman was diagnosed with MAS based on findings of GH hypersecretion, a -café--au-lait spot on the back of her right shoulder, and bone lesions in the ribs and craniofacial bones. She had a pituitary tumor, but craniofacial fibrous dysplasia invol

Traumatic Brain Injury in Vulnerable Road Users: Analysis of German In-Depth Crash Data to Inform Targeted Prevention.

Road traffic crashes are a major cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI), particularly among vulnerable road users (VRUs). However, current injury prevention strategies often overlook the heterogeneity of TBI-which include various injury types and severities-leading to an oversimplified approach to evaluating helmets and safety systems in regulations and ratings. To identify priority TBI types and severities in VRUs and to inform targeted prevention strategies, the German In-Depth Accident Study database was analyzed and a pathoanatomic classification system, i.e., Abbreviated Injury Scale, was
