Correlates of e-cigarette use for smoking cessation among clients in residential substance use disorder treatment.

Little is known about e-cigarette use among persons in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, or their use of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation. Prevalence of e-cigarette use and correlates of e-cigarette use for smoking cessation were examined among clients in SUD treatment. Participants (n = 332) were current cigarette smokers recruited from 20 residential SUD programs in California. We used multivariable logistic regression to identify correlates of using e-cigarettes for quitting smoking. Almost half (45.2%) of the sample had ever used e-cigarettes for smoking cessation, and 34% had used…

Association between tobacco use and symptomatology in individuals at ultra-high risk to develop a psychosis: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence rates and impact of tobacco smoking in individuals with a psychotic disorder have become an increasing inter … seline, 175 individuals (53%) smoked tobacco with an average of 12.4 (SD = 9.0) cigarettes per day. Smokers did not significantly differ in symptom severity from non-smokers on general, positive, negative, emotional, cognitive, behavioural, or motor symptoms across time. However, associations were found between the number of cigarettes and the severity of …

A polygenic approach to the association between smoking and schizophrenia.

Smoking prevalence in schizophrenia is considerably larger than in general population, playing an important role in early mortality. We compared the polygenic contribution to smoking in schizophrenic patients and controls to assess if genetic factors may explain the different prevalence. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for smoking initiation and four genetically correlated traits were calculated in 1108 schizophrenic patients (64.4% smokers) and 1584 controls (31.1% smokers). PRSs for smoking initiation, educational attainment, body mass index and age at first birth were associated with smoking i…

Patients with atherosclerotic peripheral arterial disease have a high risk of lung cancer: Systematic review and meta-analysis of literature.

PURPOSE: Lung cancer and atherosclerosis share common risk factors. Literature data suggest that the prevalence of lung malignancy in patien … is higher than that found in lung cancer screening programs performed in the general population of smokers and former smokers. These patients should be screened for lung cancer. Their selection may dramatically increase the benefit of lung cancer screening.

Social Smoking Environment and Associations With Cardiac Rehabilitation Attendance.

PURPOSE: Continued cigarette smoking after a major cardiac event predicts worse health outcomes and leads to reduced participation in cardiac rehabilitation (CR). Understanding which characteristics of current smokers are associated with CR attendance and smoking cessation will help improve care for these high-risk patients. We examined whether smoking among social connections was associated with CR participation and continued smoking in cardiac patients. METHODS: Participants included 149 patients hospitalized with an acute cardiac event who self-reported smoking prior to the hospitalization…
