Communication and interaction between native-speaker Norwegian nurses and nurses with Norwegian as a second language in home-based care settings: a qualitative exploratory interpretive study.

INTRODUCTION: Language barriers between healthcare personnel can influence patient safety and result in inadequate follow-up and communication of the patient's needs. AIM: The aim of this study was to explore how nurses with Norwegian as a first language (NFL) and nurses with Norwegian as a second language (NSL) experience communication and interaction with each other in home-based workplace settings. METHOD: The study involved in-depth interviews with 14 nurses: seven nurses with NFL and seven with NSL, and Braun and Clarke's framework of reflexive thematic analysis were used. RESULTS: Two

Assessing pedestrian responses to autonomous and personal mobility robots in crowded public spaces.

Robots increasingly share spaces with people, supporting delivery services and mobility for the aging populations, yet their ability to share space comfortably lacks understanding and benchmarks for designers and policy-makers. We compared human-robot (HRI) and human-human (HHI) interactions across four real-world crowd datasets spanning Europe, North America, and Asia, using a unified pipeline to detect interactions, stratify by crowd density, and model pedestrian behavior. Local motion patterns (speed, acceleration, and jerk) remained closely matched between HRI and HHI across all densities.

Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus) Welfare: Associations Between Husbandry Practices, Human-Animal Interactions, and Animal Behaviour.

Research on the welfare of pet guinea pigs and connections between their behaviour and husbandry practices is scarce. Through an online survey among 1181 German-speaking guinea pig caretakers, we investigated husbandry practices (including social composition, housing type, free roaming, enrichment, and feeding), human-animal interactions, and guinea pig behaviour. Most participating caretakers seemed attentive to their animals' needs and welfare, as shown by the prevalence of self-built enclosures (42.8%) and fenced floor areas (21.1%), with various enrichment and furnishings, and mostly balan

An overview on viral interference during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Respiratory viruses represent the most frequent cause of mortality, morbidity and high healthcare costs for emergency visits and hospitalization in the pediatric age. Respiratory viruses can circulate simultaneously and can potentially infect the same host, determining different types of interactions, the so-called viral interference. The role of viral interference has assumed great importance since December 2019, when the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) came on the scene. The aim of this narrative review is to present our perspective regarding research in respirat

The role of educational attainment and brain morphology in major depressive disorder: Findings from the ENIGMA major depressive disorder consortium.

Brain structural abnormalities and low educational attainment are consistently associated with major depressive disorder (MDD), yet there has been little research investigating the complex interaction of these factors. Brain structural alterations may represent a vulnerability or differential susceptibility marker, and in the context of low educational attainment, predict MDD. We tested this moderation model in a large multisite sample of 1958 adults with MDD and 2921 controls (aged 18 to 86) from the ENIGMA MDD working group. Using generalized linear mixed models and within-sample split-half

Characteristics Associated With Unsheltered Status Among Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Unsheltered homelessness is a strongly debated public issue. The study objective is to identify personal and community characteristics associated with unsheltered homelessness in veterans and to test for interactions between these characteristics. METHODS: In a 2018 national survey of U.S. veterans with homeless experiences; investigators assessed unsheltered time; psychosocial characteristics; and community measures of shelter access, weather, and rental affordability. Associations between these characteristics and unsheltered status were tested in July-August 2020. This study

Women's greater late-life depression: Traumatic experiences or GxE?

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the role of traumatic life experiences, and their interaction with genetic risk, in explaining gender differences in late life depression. METHODS: Data were from the 2008-through-2014 waves of the Health and Retirement Study, nationally representative of U.S. adults over age 50. Analysis was restricted to white participants. Newly available polygenic risk scores indexed genetic propensity for depression. Linear growth models examined gender effects on depression, as well as their mediation by environmental and genetic risk. RESULTS: Across-person results sugg

Trait rumination and response to negative evaluative lab-induced stress: neuroendocrine, affective, and cognitive outcomes.

Theoretical models of depression posit that, under stress, elevated trait rumination predicts more pronounced or prolonged negative affective and neuroendocrine responses, and that trait rumination hampers removing irrelevant negative information from working memory. We examined several gaps regarding these models in the context of lab-induced stress. Non-depressed undergraduates completed a rumination questionnaire and either a negative-evaluative Trier Social Stress Test (n = 55) or a non-evaluative control condition (n = 69), followed by a modified Sternberg affective working memory task as

CdiA promotes receptor-independent intercellular adhesion.

CdiB/CdiA proteins mediate inter-bacterial competition in a process termed contact-dependent growth inhibition (CDI). Filamentous CdiA exoproteins extend from CDI(+) cells and bind specific receptors to deliver toxins into susceptible target bacteria. CDI has also been implicated in auto-aggregation and biofilm formation in several species, but the contribution of CdiA-receptor interactions to these multi-cellular behaviors has not been examined. Using Escherichia coli isolate EC93 as a model, we show that cdiA and bamA receptor mutants are defective in biofilm formation, suggesting a prominen

Maternal parenting styles and mother-child relationship among adolescents with and without persistent attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

We investigated mothering and mother-child interactions in adolescents with and without persistent attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in a sample of 190 adolescents with persistent DSM-IV ADHD, 147 without persistent ADHD, and 223 without ADHD. Both participants and their mothers received psychiatric interviews for diagnosis of ADHD and other mental disorders; and reported on the Parental Bonding Instrument about mother's parenting style, the Social Adjustment Inventory for Children and Adolescents for interactions with mothers and home behavioral problems. The mothers also report

Advances in behavioral genetics: mouse models of autism.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental syndrome with markedly high heritability. The diagnostic indicators of autism are core behavioral symptoms, rather than definitive neuropathological markers. Etiology is thought to involve complex, multigenic interactions and possible environmental contributions. In this review, we focus on genetic pathways with multiple members represented in autism candidate gene lists. Many of these pathways can also be impinged upon by environmental risk factors associated with the disorder. The mouse model system provides a method to experimentally manipulate candidate genes

Collaborative referencing between individuals with aphasia and routine communication partners.

H. H. Clark (1992) argues that successful referencing depends on speakers and listeners working together to establish shared perspectives on target objects. In his collaborative referencing model, he identifies 3 phases in the referencing process: initiation, refashioning, and acceptance. For referencing tasks, successful collaboration can be seen in the streamlining of referencing expressions and in the decrease of overt collaborative effort across trials. Although previous studies have shown that speakers with aphasia can be successful on referencing tasks, they have not examined how that su

Exploring the stigma experienced by people affected by Parkinson's disease: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Stigma significantly impacts individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) and their caregivers, exacerbating social isolation, psychological distress, and reducing quality of life (QoL). Although considerable research has been conducted on PD's clinical aspects, the social and emotional challenges, like stigma, remain underexplored. Addressing stigma is crucial for enhancing well-being, fostering inclusivity and improving access to care and support. The review aims to fill this knowledge gap by synthesising existing literature on PD stigma, examining its effects on individuals and fam

Synchronal dual brain stimulation over the somatosensory cortex modulated social touch-induced analgesia depending on empathy.

Social touch, when provided as emotional support, can induce pain relief. Alpha inter-brain synchrony in the somatosensory cortex may be a neural factor contributing to the pain relief induced by social touch. This study investigated whether artificial manipulation of inter-brain communication in the pain-receiver and touch-giver could modulate touch-induced analgesia using transcranial alternating current stimulation. Sixteen same-sex pairs of participants were assigned the roles of pain-receiver and touch-giver during alpha-band transcranial alternating current stimulation applied to the som

Behaviorally informed digital campaigns and their association with social media engagement and COVID-19 vaccine uptake in Belize.

BACKGROUND: Increasing vaccination coverage was key to curbing the COVID-19 pandemic globally. However, lack of trust in the vaccine and fear of side effects in regions like the Caribbean resulted in a low uptake despite enough vaccine supply. METHODS: We conducted two correlational analyses and one experiment between five sequential behaviorally informed Facebook campaigns, social media performance outcomes, and district-level vaccination data. First, we ran multivariate linear regression models to estimate the mean differences between the campaigns in (i) social media performance ("Clicks"

Care of patients undergoing withdrawal of life-sustaining treatments: an ICU nurse perspective.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses working in South Korea report experiencing uncertainty about how to care for patients undergoing withdrawal of life-sustaining treatments (WLT). A lack of consensus on care guidelines for patients with WLT contributes to uncertainty, ambiguity, and confusion on how to act appropriately within current law and social and ethical norms. To date, little has been discussed or described about how ICU nurses construct meaning about their roles in caring for dying patients in the context of wider social issues about end-of-life care and how this meaning int

Evaluating accurate and efficient sampling strategies designed to measure social behavior and brush use in drylot housed cattle.

Efficient sampling strategies expedite behavioral data collection. While multiple studies have evaluated sampling strategies for core behaviors in cattle, few have focused on social interactions. To identify sampling strategies that accurately captured cattle social behaviors and brush use feedlot steers (n = 3 pens; 9 steers/pen) were observed from 8:00 to 17:00. Average bout duration (sec), total duration per day (sec), and bout frequency were recorded for allogrooming, bar licking, tongue rolling, and brush utilization. Frequency was recorded for headbutting and mounting. Data was extracted

The Use of 2 e-Learning Modalities for Diabetes Education Using Facebook in 2 Cities of Argentina During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and the confinement that was implemented in Argentina generated a need to implement innovative tools for the strengthening of diabetes care. Diabetes self-management education (DSME) is a core element of diabetes care; however, because of COVID-19 restrictions, in-person diabetes educational activities were suspended. Social networks have played an instrumental role in this context to provide DSME in 2 cities of Argentina and help persons with diabetes in their daily self-management. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate 2 diabetes education modalit

Maternal depression and infant social withdrawal as predictors of behaviour and development in vertically HIV-infected children at 3.5 years.

BACKGROUND: In low- and middle-income countries, there is a high prevalence of post-partum depression and it is often associated with HIV status. Maternal depression negatively affects mothering and can lead to social withdrawal in infants. Maternal depression and infant social withdrawal can have deleterious long-term effects on children's behaviour and neurodevelopmental trajectories. AIM: To investigate whether maternal depression and infant social withdrawal at 10-12 months post-partum were significant predictors of child behaviour and development at 42 months. METHOD: Seventy-four mothe

Cell-specific energy crisis in the ageing brain: Mitochondrial dynamics drives neuron-glia metabolic uncoupling and neurodegeneration.

Ageing is the primary risk factor for neurodegeneration and age-related cognitive decline, which is increasingly recognised as a systemic collapse of metabolic crosstalk between neurons and glial cells in the brain. This narrative review elucidates that mitochondrial dynamics - encompassing biogenesis, fusion, fission, and mitophagy - acts as the core regulatory mechanism governing this multicellular interaction network, and drives the cell-specific energy crisis that underpins pathological progression in the ageing brain. We delineate that senescent astrocytes disrupt the astrocyte-neuron lac
