Social anxiety disorder comorbidity in patients with bipolar disorder: a clinical replication.

BACKGROUND: The authors investigated frequency, clinical correlates and onset temporal relationship of social anxiety disorder (SAD) in adult patients with a diagnosis of bipolar I disorder. METHODS: Subjects were 189 patients whose diagnoses were assessed by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R-Patient Version. RESULTS: Twenty-four patients (12.7%) met DSM-III-R criteria for lifetime SAD; of these, 19 (10.1% of entire sample) had SAD within the last month. Significantly more bipolar patients with comorbid SAD also had substance use disorders compared to those without. On the HSCL

Brain morphometry and cognitive performance in detoxified alcohol-dependents with preserved psychosocial functioning.

The extent of structural brain damage and related cognitive deficits has been little described in alcohol-dependent individuals with preserved social functioning. Thus, we investigated the relationship between regional alterations, executive performance, and drinking history. Volumes of gray and white matter were assessed using magnetic resonance imaging voxel-based morphometry in healthy men and in detoxified alcohol-dependent men with good psychosocial functioning. Their executive performance was assessed using neuropsychological tests. Regression analyses were carried out in the regions in

[Female migrants in the health care system. Health care utilisation, access barriers and health promotion strategies].

Due to the evident interaction between social factors and health, migrants are exposed to specific risk factors and access barriers to health services. Some examples are the lower education level, the low social position and/or the insufficient language skills. This concept is further elaborated in the multi-factorial impacts of health literacy. Female migrants often experience additional discrimination because of their gender. Despite the lack of representative data, consistent studies show that female migrants do not regularly take advantage of health care prevention and present themselves w

Alcohol-use problems in young black adults: effects of religiosity, social resources, and mental health.

OBJECTIVE: Problems with alcohol remain a serious public health concern despite decreased use among some populations. Here we examine the relationship between alcohol problems and religiosity, hypothesizing that social resources may mediate this relationship. METHOD: Using data from a longitudinal cohort study of a black community population (N=1242) followed from age 6 to 32, analysis of moment structures (AMOS) multiple regression analyses were used to examine the association of religious involvement and alcohol-use problems, taking into account mediators, moderators, or both. RESULTS: Fin

[Sexual violence--sexualized violence].

The fusion of sexuality and violence is a major issue of concern and has become a central issue of social policy. That fusion can be observed in private circumstances as well as in society at large. Children and young people as well as women and men can fall victim to that phenomenon. Eventually, due to gender stereotyping, the awareness of the victimization of the male gender is somewhat weak. In the social-political discourse the male is seen as dominant and powerful and the female gender as the weak one. Sexual violence and/or domination therefore is interpreted as mirroring the genderized

Early postnatal protein malnutrition changes the development of social play in rats.

Early protein malnutrition produces structural and functional alterations in the brain and changes the organism-environment interactions. Rats from 26 to 76 days of age were used to study the effects of early postnatal protein malnutrition on the development of social play. During lactation phase the litters were fed diet containing 16% protein (well-nourished) or 6% protein (malnourished). From weaning to the end of behavioral tests well-nourished animals were fed a commercial lab chow diet (well-nourished--W) and the malnourished rats were divided into 2 groups: one was maintained on 6% prot

Pushing the boundaries of outreach work: the case of needle exchange outreach programs in Canada.

In this paper, we examine the challenges of defining the boundaries of outreach work using the example of needle exchange programs. In particular, we examine the multiple and inter-related factors that extend needle exchange outreach work beyond its official mandate. Using semi-structured interviews, 59 workers at 15 programs in Ontario, Canada were asked questions about operational policies and routines. An iterative and inductive analytic process was used. Over time, most outreach workers develop a well-defined sense of the activities they consider to be consistent with a harm reduction appr

The newest epidemic: a review of HIV/AIDS in Central and Eastern Europe.

HIV/AIDS has emerged as a grave public health threat in Central and Eastern Europe and in the Central Asian republics over the past five years. Massive political, social, cultural, and behavioural changes - along with economic upheaval and collapse of the public health infrastructure in many countries - have created circumstances conducive to the rapid spread of HIV. This paper reviews HIV and sexually transmitted disease (STD) data for all countries in the region, as well as behavioural, social, cultural, and other HIV epidemic enabling factors. The epidemiological picture of HIV in the regio

Psychosocial adaptation in adolescents and young adults with Marfan syndrome: an exploratory study.

We conducted a pilot study to evaluate the psychological effects and consequences of Marfan syndrome in 17 patients between 16 and 35 years of age. Through a semi-structured interview, we investigated how the patients coped daily with Marfan syndrome and evaluated the impact of the disease on specific items such as schooling, occupational choices, self-image, and social behaviour. A second part of the study consisted of a battery of standardised psychological tests to evaluate the patients' anxiety and depression levels and coping styles. The following psychological tests were used: State and

Fixed-Dose Combinations for Hypertension: Barriers to Use and Opportunities for Health Systems.

BACKGROUND: Uncontrolled hypertension is a leading driver of heart disease, chronic kidney disease, heart failure, dementia, stroke, and pregnancy-related complications. Fixed-dose combinations (FDCs) are guideline-endorsed first-line therapies that improve blood pressure control by reducing pill burden, improving adherence, and targeting multiple pathophysiological mechanisms. However, FDC utilization remains low across U.S. health systems. Few studies examine the factors influencing FDC uptake; existing qualitative studies rarely interrogate structural barriers or formulate stakeholder-infor

The principles of Population-Level Approaches to Dementia Risk Reduction (PLADRR).

Dementia is a leading health policy challenge, with cases expected to triple by 2050, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Epidemiological evidence demonstrates falling age-specific incidence rates in high-income countries, suggesting risk can be lowered at the population level. The Population-Level Approaches to Dementia Risk Reduction (PLADRR) Research Group is a diverse, international network of researchers committed to investigating how structural, social, and environmental conditions can promote life course brain health and reduce dementia risk across the population. This Polic

The Association Between Childhood Neighborhood Environment and Depressive Symptoms Among Chinese Rural Older Adults: A Gender-Moderated Analysis from a Life Course Perspective.

Life course theory links early-life experiences to late-life depression, yet research on childhood neighborhood effects among rural older adults-especially gendered differences-remains limited. Analyzing 2014-2018 CHARLS data of 8,034 rural older adults via structural equation modeling, we confirm a significant long-term association between childhood neighborhood environment and depressive symptoms. Multi-group analysis reveals stark gender heterogeneity: the association holds exclusively for rural older women, with no significant effect among men. These findings underscore women's lifelong vu

Brain structural and functional alterations in adolescents with borderline personality disorder: A systematic review and a research agenda.

Adolescent borderline personality disorder (aBPD) is linked to severe psychological problems and social dysfunction in the affected adolescents. However, the neural bases of this disorder are still poorly understood. The objective of this review is to summarize the current understanding of brain structural and functional alterations identified by neuroimaging methods and to propose future research directions. This systematic review identified widespread alterations of three main brain networks in aBPD, i.e., the Central Executive Network, the Default Mode Network, and the Affective Network. We
