Changes of GTP cyclohydrolase I and neuronal apoptosis in rat spinal dorsal cord induced by sciatic nerve injury.

It has been reported that the expression of GTP cyclohydrolase I (GCH1) and neuronal apoptosis in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) is related to the generation of neuropathic pain. In this study, we hypothesize that GCH1 protein and neuronal apoptosis in rat spinal dorsal horn may also increase after chronic sciatic nerve injury. To establish the neuropathic pain model, we slightly ligated the right sciatic nerve of experimental rats. Mechanical allodynia was observed in CCI group on the 3rd day postoperatively determined by the Von Frey test, and it lasted until the 14th day after operation. No mat

Home-based circuit resistance training to overcome barriers to exercise for people with spinal cord injury: a case study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: People with spinal cord injury (SCI) have limited options for aerobic exercise. Existing options are often difficult to access, or they result in muscle imbalances that can eventually contribute to joint dysfunction. These difficulties can cause individuals to live a more sedentary lifestyle, putting them at greater risk for developing obesity and other cardiovascular disease risk factors. Therefore, a mode of exercise that allows people with SCI an affordable, accessible, and effective way to engage in cardiovascular exercise is needed. CASE DESCRIPTION: The participa

Meta-analysis of pre-clinical studies of early decompression in acute spinal cord injury: a battle of time and pressure.

BACKGROUND: The use of early decompression in the management of acute spinal cord injury (SCI) remains contentious despite many pre-clinical studies demonstrating benefits and a small number of supportive clinical studies. Although the pre-clinical literature favours the concept of early decompression, translation is hindered by uncertainties regarding overall treatment efficacy and timing of decompression. METHODS: We performed meta-analysis to examine the pre-clinical literature on acute decompression of the injured spinal cord. Three databases were utilised; PubMed, ISI Web of Science and

Medical complications and falls in patients with spinal cord injury during the immediate phase after completing a rehabilitation program.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Complications and falls are crucial problems in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, existing evidence on complications comes from data from hospital records over a long period of time, and falls were mostly reported retrospectively in patients with incomplete SCI. This study prospectively explored the occurrence of complications and falls, and associated factors in patients with SCI during the 6 months after discharge. METHODS: One hundred subjects with SCI (50 wheelchair-bound (WB) and 50 ambulatory (AM) subjects) from a tertiary rehabilitation center comp

Balance training improves static stability and gait in chronic incomplete spinal cord injury subjects: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Walking is considered the most important goal after an incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). Only recently it has been demonstrated that balance is a key factor of walking recovery, but no data on the efficacy of balance training in supporting walking function in SCI subjects are available. AIM: The object of the study was to determine the efficacy of visual biofeedback task-specific balance training (vBFB) in improving balance performance and gait in SCI subjects compared with conventional over-ground rehabilitation (Rehab). DESIGN: Open-case study with retrospective matched cont

Polyethylene glycol repairs membrane damage and enhances functional recovery: a tissue engineering approach to spinal cord injury.

The integrity of the neuronal membrane is crucial for its function and cellular survival; thus, ineffective repair of damaged membranes may be one of the key elements underlying the neuronal degeneration and overall functional loss that occurs after spinal cord injury (SCI). it has been shown that polyethylene glycol (PEG) can reseal axonal membranes following various injuries in multiple in vitro and in vivo injury models. in addition, PEG may also directly prevent the effects of mitochondria-derived oxidative stress on intracellular components. Thus, PEG repairs mechanically injured cells by

Anabolic steroids reduce spinal cord injury-related bone loss in rats associated with increased Wnt signaling.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes severe bone loss. At present, there is no practical treatment to delay or prevent bone loss in individuals with motor-complete SCI. Hypogonadism is common in men after SCI and may exacerbate bone loss. The anabolic steroid nandrolone reduces bone loss due to microgravity or nerve transection. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether nandrolone reduced bone loss after SCI and, if so, to explore the mechanisms of nandrolone action. METHODS: Male rats with complete transection of the spinal cord were administered nandrolone combined with a physiological replac
