Phase II evaluation of fluorouracil and recombinant alpha-2a-interferon in previously untreated patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Based on initial encouraging results of the combination of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) with recombinant alpha-2a-interferon (r alpha-2a-IFN) in the treatment of advanced colorectal carcinomas, a clinical trial was conducted using 5-FU with r alpha-2a-IFN in 49 patients with advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma. METHODS: Forty-nine patients who had bidimensionally measurable disease and had not been treated previously with chemotherapy were entered in the trial. Starting on day 1, 5-FU was administered as a continuous infusion at a dose of 750 mg/m2/day for 5 consecutive days. Starting on

[The "unspecific" immune state in skin diseases with special reference to microphage functions].

Polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNL) or microphages resp. are essentially involved, on account of their ubiquity within the entire organism as well as their phagocytic and intracellular killing properties, in the complex organization of the antimicrobial and antitumoral protective capacity of man. Positive chemotaxis triggers the migration of PMNL to the specific danger area and thus initiates an immune reaction. An either inborn or acquired defect or functional weakness of PMNL may entail a state of persisting viral, fungal and/or bacterial infections. Impairment of various PMNL functions may

Interferon-producing capacity of human tonsil cells and properties of interferon produced by these cells.

Tonsils excised from human beings for chronic tonsillitis have been shown to be an accessible and sufficiently rich source of human lymphocytes. Tonsil cells produced interferon as intensively as blood leukocytes and the properties of this interferon were similar to those of leukocyte interferon. The optimal conditions for interferon production by tonsil cells were established.

Physiological and Biochemical Screening of Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) Genotypes to Short-Term Waterlogging Stress at the Seedling Stage.

Waterlogging (WL) has emerged as a serious threat for chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) growth and productivity. A practical approach to overcome this challenge is to explore chilli germplasms with enhanced tolerance to WL stress. This study investigated the responses of 12 diverse chilli genotypes to short-term WL stress and subsequent recovery at the seedling stage. The 35-d-old chilli seedlings were exposed to three growth conditions in pots: (i) control (no stress), (ii) WL (3-d), and (iii) recovery (6-d after WL), following a completely randomized design with three replications. WL stress signi

The effect of drought on physiological and agronomic traits of tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter].

Increased intensity and duration of drought as a consequence of global warming is resulting in increased crop failure and food insecurity. This is particularly prevalent in regions where agriculture is rain fed, as the resultant water deficit in crop tissues as a consequence of insufficient soil moisture to sustain metabolic integrity results in subcellular damage and, ultimately tissue death. Different plants can perceive moisture stress stimuli from their environment and develop adaptive mechanisms to cope with water stress. However, the response of tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter], a st

Black carbon as a compound agricultural stressor: impacts on plant physiology, crop productivity, and agricultural sustainability.

Black carbon is an underappreciated compound agricultural stressor that simultaneously disrupts plant physiology, agroecosystem functioning, andcrop productivity, highlighting the need for realistic exposure assessment and integrated strategies for climate-resilient agriculture. Black carbon (BC), a carbonaceous particulate generated through the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, biomass, and biofuels, is recognized as a major short-lived climate pollutant with significant implications for atmospheric processes and agricultural sustainability. Unlike engineered biochar, atmospheric BC acts

Plant water adaptation strategies and lithological driving mechanisms in karst ecosystems: A review.

The karst region of Southwest China is characterized by extensive bedrock exposure and limited soil cover, forming a dual structure of soil and water. Such unique geological background makes epikarst water a critical water source for plants, while bedrock lithology is the key factor driving the development and water storage capacity of epikarst zone. Under the combined impacts of extreme climate events and frequent karstic drought, the sustainability of vegetation restoration faces severe challenges. It is crucial to clarify the influences of lithology-regulated water supply on plant adaptatio

Effects of Increasing CO2 Concentration on Crop Growth and Soil Ammonia-Oxidizing Microorganisms in a Fababean (Vicia faba L.) and Wheat (Triticum aestivum Yunmai) Intercropping System.

Elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2) levels can enhance crop yields but may simultaneously reduce quality, impacting both macronutrient and micronutrient concentrations, and potentially decreasing protein content in cereal grains. This study examined the effects of elevated CO2 (eCO2) and nitrogen (N) fertilization on crop growth, yield, and soil nitrogen cycling through a glass greenhouse experiment using Eutric Regosol soil. The experimental design incorporated two CO2 gradients: ambient CO2 (aCO2) at approximately 410 ppm during the day and 460 ppm at night, and eCO2 at approximately 550 ppm duri

Assessing climate change impact on watershed hydrological processes and stream temperature by considering CO2 emissions.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are a critical indicator influencing climate change and have significant impacts on the health of riverine ecosystems. The effects of CO2 emissions on streamflow and stream temperature have not been explicitly considered in process-based models, which limits the models' capability to simulate streamflow and stream temperature under varying CO2 concentration scenarios. This study modified an equilibrium temperature model and a CO2 effect model to overcome this limitation, which were subsequently coupled with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The cou

Water Stress Promotes Secondary Sexual Dimorphism in Ecophysiological Traits of Papaya Seedlings.

Plant genders could express different functional strategies to compensate for different reproductive costs, as females have an additional role in fruit and seed production. Secondary sexual dimorphism (SSD) expression is frequently greater under stress than under optimal growth conditions. The early gender identification in papaya may help to reduce orchard costs because the most desirable fruit shape is formed by hermaphrodite plants. We hypothesized that (a) gender ecophysiological phenotyping can be an alternative to make gender segregations in papaya seedlings, and (b) such gender segregat

Comprehensive analysis of the effects on photosynthesis and energy balance in tomato leaves under magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium (Mg), as an essential and central mineral element for chlorophyll biosynthesis, plays a crucial role in plant photosynthesis. Magnesium deficiency inevitably affects the photosynthetic ability of leaves, thereby impairing the yield and quality of crops. However, few studies have revealed the intrinsic mechanisms by which Mg deficiency hinders growth and photosynthesis, particularly by analyzing the processes of light capture, dissipation, absorption, and utilization in tomato. The experiment studied the effects of Mg deficiency on internal structure of leaves, light absorption, elect

Abscisic acid improves drought resilience, growth, physio-biochemical and quality attributes in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) at critical growth stages.

Wheat is an important staple crop not only in Pakistan but all over the globe. Although the area dedicated to wheat cultivation expands annually, the quantity of wheat harvested is declining due to various biotic and abiotic factors. Global wheat production and output have suffered as a result of the drought, which is largely driven by a lack of water and environmental factors. Organic fertilizers have been shown to reduce the severity of drought. The current research was conducted in semi-arid climates to mitigate the negative effects of drought on wheat during its critical tillering (DTS), f

Use of an automatic fruit-zone cooling system to cope with multiple summer stresses in Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes.

Grapevines are frequently subjected to heatwaves and limited water availability during ripening. These conditions can have consequences for the physiological health of the vines. Moreover, the situation is often exacerbated by intense solar radiation, resulting in reduced yield due to sunburn and a decline in quality. In light of these challenges, our study aimed to develop a fruit-zone cooling system designed to mitigate grape sunburn damage and improve the microclimate conditions within the vineyard. The system comprises a network of proximal sensors that collect microclimate data from the v

Metabolomics and physio-chemical analyses of mulberry plants leaves response to manganese deficiency and toxicity reveal key metabolites and their pathways in manganese tolerance.

INTRODUCTION: Manganese (Mn) plays a pivotal role in plant growth and development. Aside aiding in plant growth and development, Mn as heavy metal (HM) can be toxic in soil when applied in excess. Morus alba is an economically significant plant, capable of adapting to a range of environmental conditions and possessing the potential for phytoremediation of contaminated soil by HMs. The mechanism by which M. alba tolerates Mn stresses remains obscure. METHODS: In this study, Mn concentrations comprising sufficiency (0.15 mM), higher regimes (1.5 mM and 3 mM), and deficiency (0 mM and 0.03 mM),
