OBJECTIVES: While issues related to mental health, including suicide, have been frequently reported among finance workers, no formal investigation has been undertaken. This study was conducted to analyze correlations between indicators of performance pressure, which is a characteristic of the finance sector, and mental health.
METHODS: An online survey was administered to 1,181 participants. Brief questionnaires were employed to ask general questions about participant characteristics, work environment, and the presence of performance pressure, suicidal thoughts/plans/attempts, depression (ind

BACKGROUND: Women are a growing portion of the U.S. veteran population, and every year the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) serves an increasing number of women seeking obstetrics services. Women veterans experience elevated rates of anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and traumatic events, including military sexual trauma, as compared with women in the general population. It is possible that mental health disorders may be associated with birth experiences.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated the link between anxiety, depression, PTSD, and military sexual trauma (MST; i.e.,

Objective Mental health among undergraduate students is a growing concern in higher education, but relatively little is known about the mental health of autistic college students. In order to better understand the unique needs of this population, the present study examines whether demographic and psychosocial correlates of anxiety and depression differ in autistic first-year college students and their non-autistic peers. Methods Secondary data analysis was conducted utilizing population-weighted data of full-time college students in their first year attending four-year colleges and universiti

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to explore whether brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) could be predictive for the diagnosis of panic disorder (PD) and to explore the association between serum BDNF levels and the treatment response to escitalopram in PD patients.
METHODS: Ninety PD patients and 99 healthy controls (HCs) were finally recruited. PD patients were treated only by escitalopram for 8 weeks. All patients were administered the Short-Form Health Survey-36 (SF-36), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA-14), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) to assess life quality, anxiety symptom

People experiencing homelessness report increased exposure to traumatic life events and higher rates of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder as compared with the general population. Heart rate variability-biofeedback (HRV-BF) has been shown to decrease symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. However, HRV-BF has not been tested with the most vulnerable of populations, homeless adults. The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to compare the effectiveness of an HRV-BF intervention versus a Health Promotion (HP) active control intervention focused on improv

BACKGROUND: We examined whether women with prenatal mood and anxiety disorders would exhibit differential pro- and anti-inflammatory marker trajectories during the prenatal and postpartum periods compared to women without these disorders.
METHODS: Approximately 179 pregnant women participated in a longitudinal study conducted in two urban areas. Blood samples for inflammatory markers were collected at six study visits. The Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV (SCID) was administered to participants scoring above cutoffs on anxiety and depression. Pregnant women with SCID Axis I diagno

INTRODUCTION: We compared neuropsychiatric symptoms between child and adolescent huntingtin gene-mutation carriers and noncarriers. Given previous evidence of atypical striatal development in carriers, we also assessed the relationship between neuropsychiatric traits and striatal development.
METHODS: Participants between 6 and 18 years old were recruited from families affected by Huntington's disease and tested for the huntingtin gene expansion. Neuropsychiatric traits were assessed using the Pediatric Behavior Scale and the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function. Striatal volumes w

Pregnant women and those who have recently given birth are considered an at-risk population during the COVID-19 pandemic with regards to the impact of both general stress and pandemic-related stressors. The extent to which subjective social status (SSS), one's perception of relative standing compared to others in a social hierarchy, might mitigate the effects of COVID-19-related health worries on mental health has not yet been reported, despite SSS often outperforming socioeconomic status as a predictor of various health outcomes including depression. This cross-sectional survey study tested t

It has been shown that kappa opioid receptor (KOR) antagonists, such as nor-binaltorphimine (nor-BNI), have antinociceptive effects in some pain models that affect the trigeminal system. Also, its anxiolytic-like effect has been extensively demonstrated in the literature. The present study aimed to investigate the systemic, local, and central effect of nor-BNI on trigeminal neuropathic pain using the infraorbital nerve constriction model (CCI-ION), as well as to evaluate its effect on anxiety-like behavior associated with this model. Animals received nor-BNI systemically; in the trigeminal gan

BACKGROUND: The incidence of hospital-treated concussion is 100-300/100,000 person years. Reporting of long-lasting post-concussion symptoms (PCS) is estimated at 5-15%. Attachment insecurity is a potential vulnerability factor for physical illness and poorer disease outcomes in general. This study aimed to explore associations between attachment insecurity and PCS in young people sustaining a concussion.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was embedded in a cohort of 15-30-year-old patients (n = 3080) 3 months after sustaining a concussion. Data were obtained from a database and questionnair

Increasing studies report that prolonged or multiple anaesthetic exposures early in life are associated with detrimental effects on brain function. Although studies have evaluated the detrimental effects on neurocognitive function, few have focused on long-term neuropsychiatric effects. In the present study, C57BL/6 mice received either three neonatal isoflurane exposures or control exposure. Starting on postnatal day 45, the mice were either exposed or not to a chronic variable stress (CVS) paradigm, and CVS-related neuropsychiatric performance was evaluated using a series of behavioural test

The Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG)-axis, and testosterone in particular, play an important role in social motivational behavior. Socially avoidant behavior, characteristic of social anxiety disorder (SAD), has been linked to low endogenous testosterone levels, and can be alleviated by testosterone administration in SAD. Although these beneficial effects of testosterone may translate to exposure therapy, it remains unknown whether testosterone increases prior to exposure improve therapy outcomes. In this proof-of-principle study, we tested whether pre-exposure (reactive and baseline) endo

BACKGROUND: Research has well-established that childhood maltreatment is associated with depressive and social anxiety symptoms in adults. Emotional support has been proposed as a mediator, yet research investigating the unique contributions of emotional support from friends, family members, and romantic partners in adulthood is sparse.
OBJECTIVE: The current study tested emotional support from family, friends, and romantic partners as mechanisms linking childhood maltreatment to depressive and social anxiety symptoms in adults.

BACKGROUND: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW; <1000 g) infants are at risk for both asthma and problems like inattention, hyperactivity, anxiety, and depression. Asthma predicts behavioral and emotional problems in term-born children. The nature of these associations is poorly understood. We tested 3 models of association: independent risk, mediation, and effect modification to explore interplay among birth weight, asthma, and behavioral and emotional problems.
METHODS: We used data from a prospective cohort of ELBW infants born 1992 to 1995. Exposure was ELBW; primary outcomes were parent-re

Severe irritability is a common and clinically important problem longitudinally associated with internalizing and externalizing problems in children. To better understand these mechanisms and to inform treatment research, we tested cognitive-behavioral processes as candidate mediators in the paths from irritability to later problems. Methods: A school sample (N = 238, 48% female, ages 8-10) was assessed at ~6-month intervals in fall (T1) and spring (T2) of third to fourth grade, and again the following fall (T3). Measures assessed irritability (T1/predictor); anger and sadness coping, intolera

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety and depression are prevalent among medical students. Brazilian medical students have higher levels of depression and lower quality of life than their U.S. counterparts, and no preventive intervention exists for this risk group in Brazil. The Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP), a cognitive-behavioral treatment protocol for neuroticism, was recently adapted into a single-session, preventive intervention. This study tested the impact of this protocol on psychiatric symptoms and quality of life in Brazilian medical students.
METHODS: In t
