BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The osteogenic potency of erythropoietin (EPO) has been documented. However, its efficacy in a large-animal model has not yet been investigated; nor has a clinically safe dosage. The purpose of this study was to overcome such limitations of previous studies and thereby pave the way for possible clinical application. BACKGROUND: Various instruments have been developed for collecting bone debris during intraoral autogenous bone graft procedures in implant surgery. The aim of this study was to quantitatively determine the degree of contamination in bone debris collected by different devices.
METHODS: Twelve patients underwent autogenous bone collection using a bone chisel, bone scraper, trephine drill, and bone filter during bone augmentation surgery as a part of implant therapy, and the total bacterial count in bone debris collected by each was determined.

Although kidney transplantation is a widely used therapy for chronic renal failure, not all patients can be transplanted due to the limited numbers of organ donations. A possible solution could be xenogenic kidney transplantation. Herein we have described the present state, problems and possible solutions using xenograft treatments.

BACKGROUND: Donor-derived Strongyloides stercoralis infection occurs rarely after transplantation, and the risk factors are not well understood. We present cases of two renal allograft recipients who developed Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome after receipt of organs from a common deceased donor who received high-dose steroids as part of a preconditioning regimen.
METHODS: The two renal transplant patients who developed Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome are reported in case study format with review of the literature.

PURPOSE: The use of bone and connective tissue allografts has grown rapidly and surpassed the use of autografts in many countries. Being of human origin, bone and tendon allografts carry the risk of disease transmission and complications have been reported. As part of the Project NOTIFY led by the World Health Organisation, an effort to improve recognition, reporting, tracking and investigation of adverse outcomes of allografts was initiated, achieving a comprehensive review of associated disease transmission and failures. OBJECTIVE: To introduce individualized 3-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of maxillary defect by prefabricated titanium mesh combined with pedicled buccal fat pad flap (PBFPF) and bone autograft.

Alloplastic bone substitutes can be used to alter facial contour. In contrast, autogenous bone grafts have a successful 80-year history of restoring facial contour as well as the basic functional support of the craniofacial skeleton. The traditional procedures for harvesting and using autogenous bone grafts are not obsolete. During the past 30 years, the techniques have been refined and new sources have been found, such as calvarial grafts. New tools were required and have been designed to make harvesting of grafts easier and faster for the surgeon and safer and less expensive for the patient.

A novel approach to circumventing the shortage in transplantable donor organs is the use of embryonic primordia that develop inside the host. Previously published work has shown that transplantation of rat fetal kidney primordia (metanephroi) onto the omentum of adult rat hosts results in growth and development of the metanephroi into functioning kidney units capable of providing a measurable renal function. However, for anatomical and physiological reasons the omentum may not provide the ideal site for transplantation and may limit the maximum renal function that the transplants can achieve.

Schwann cells and neural precursor cells derived from adult human brain (subventricular zone) and from bone marrow were studied anatomically and physiologically after transplantation into the demyelinated rat spinal cord.
