The authors review the molecular genetics and pathophysiology of hereditary recurrent focal neuropathies: hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) and hereditary neuralgic amyotrophy (HNA). Significant progress in the understanding of HNPP and HNA has been achieved. HNPP and HNA are distinct clinical and pathologic disease entities with autosomal dominant inheritance. Molecular genetic studies have shown that HNPP and HNA are located on chromosome 17 but at distinct genetic loci (17p11.2 for HNPP, 17q25 for HNA). The goal of our work was to determine hearing thresholds in patients with hearing impairment due to hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN I). In assessment of auditory function we used two methods: pure tone and speech audiometry. Pure tone audiometry was performed using air and bone conducted signals. Speech comprehension was defined with a test battery of monosyllabic words unknown to the patient. We present the case of an adult patient with growth hormone (GH) insufficiency and hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type 1. Stopping GH replacement at the attainment of final height was associated with a marked reduction in power and mobility, resulting in the patient becoming wheelchair bound. We performed a clinical study and linkage analysis on 278 subjects (66 affected) belonging to eight families with X-linked dominant Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) neuropathy. This form affects 11.8% of CMT patients in Iowa. Motor nerve conduction velocities (MNCVs) were significantly slowed consistent with type 1 CMT. We investigated 322 patients, 20 and 40 old to find connections between the occurrence and localisation of facets, malocclusion and dynamic occlusion and estimated special aspects of periodontal reactions. The first reported case of the rare genodermatosis incontinentia pigmenti (Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome) affecting a 6-week-old Qatari girl is presented. An interesting feature in our patient is the simultaneous presence of several stages of lesion evolution. The clinical and pathologic features of incontinentia pigmenti are reviewed briefly.

A method is described to produce radiographs of thin sections of human teeth and periodontal structures. These high resolution contact x-rays allow for visualization of the microscopic details of the mineralized components of these tissues in a dimension heretofore not examined.
