Congenital Upper Eyelid Entropion in an Extremely Low Birth Weight Neonate: Early Surgical Correction to Prevent Corneal Injury.

Congenital upper eyelid entropion is rare but can rapidly cause severe corneal morbidity in neonates if left untreated. In extremely low-birth-weight infants with multisystem anomalies, surgical intervention carries substantial risks, creating a balance between life-preserving caution and vision-preserving urgency. We report a case of early surgical correction in a late preterm neonate weighing 900g who presented with bilateral congenital upper eyelid entropion and right corneal ulceration. Surgical correction involved transposing the pretarsal orbicularis and levator aponeurosis complex, fixi

Ophthalmic trauma: First-line management in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Eye trauma ranges from minor injuries to vision-threatening emergencies and contributes substantially to acute care resources in Australia. Although ocular trauma represents a small proportion of primary care consultations, its potential for permanent visual loss underscores the need for prompt recognition and management. OBJECTIVE: To provide general practitioners (GPs) with a practical, evidence-based guide for first-line assessment and management of common ophthalmic trauma, aligned with The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) competencies and focused on s

Systemic Sclerosis Presenting With Chronic Atrophic Gastritis and Retinal Artery Occlusion: A Case Report.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc), also known as scleroderma, is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by fibroproliferative changes, vascular dysfunction, and small-vessel proliferation. It can affect multiple organ systems, including the gastrointestinal tract, skin, heart, eyes, kidneys, and lungs. We report a case of a 67-year-old woman with systemic sclerosis who tested negative for specific antibodies and simultaneously developed two rare complications: autoimmune atrophic gastritis resulting in megaloblastic anemia and acute retinal artery occlusion. Notably, she presented with megaloblastic a

mTORC2-dependent autophagy inhibition regulates the replication of HSV-1 and adenovirus in viral keratitis & conjunctivitis.

Viral keratitis & conjunctivitis result in multiple ophthalmic symptoms and even progress to vision loss without timely intervention. Although multitudinous pathogens can cause ocular infections, the regulatory mechanisms underlying virus-host interactions remain incompletely defined. Our clinical and mechanistic investigations identify the co-infection of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and adenovirus as a predominant etiology of viral keratoconjunctivitis in Shenzhen, China (2024). The viral co-infection causes both severe symptoms and inflammations in clinical cases and in vitro. Mechan

Peripheral Nerve Surgery in Head and Neck Reconstruction: Motor Reanimation and Sensory Restoration in the Oncologic Setting.

Oncologic ablation in the head and neck region frequently results in the sacrifice of peripheral nerves and their target organs. This inevitably can compromise facial expression, ocular protection, oral competence, speech, swallowing, and cutaneous sensation, causing functional and aesthetic impairment. The application of principles from peripheral nerve surgery in these instances provides the opportunity to minimize these morbidities. For facial reanimation, targeted nerve transfers, cross-facial nerve grafting, and nuances for functioning free muscle transplantation are delineated to restore

Conjunctival Lymphangiectasia - case report.

Conjunctival lymphangiectasia is a rare pathology that represents the enlargement of the lymphatic vessels localized in the conjunctiva. Patients may be asymptomatic or experience symptoms such as foreign body sensation, congestion, irritation, dryness, and blurry vision. There are various methods of therapy for patients with severe and symptomatic conjunctival lymphangiectasia. Surgical excision has the lowest rates of recurrence. We present a case of a 24-year-old woman with conjunctival lymphangiectasia and a history of left lower limb enlargement and bilaterally enlarged submandibular and

Use of Visual Electrophysiology to Monitor Retinal and Optic Nerve Toxicity.

It is important for clinicians to consider exposure to toxic substances and nutritional deficiencies when diagnosing and managing cases of vision loss. In these cases, physiologic damage can alter the function of key components of the visual pathway before morphologic changes can be detected by traditional imaging methods. Electrophysiologic tests can aid in the early detection of such functional changes to visual pathway components, including the retina or optic nerve. This review provides an overview of various electrophysiologic techniques, including multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG), fu

Irregular Astigmatism and Higher-Order Aberrations in Eyes With Dry Eye Disease.

Visual disturbances were included in the definition of dry eye disease in the 2007 Dry Eye Workshop report. As a result, quality of vision (QoV) in dry eye patients has received increased attention. Corneal topography and wavefront sensors have been used to objectively and quantitatively evaluate optical quality, with data showing increases in irregular astigmatism and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) in dry eye patients. Furthermore, ocular optical characteristics are influenced by the tear film, which constantly fluctuates over time. Therefore, dynamic quantitative assessments of optical qual
