A Critical Analysis Exploring the Role of African American English and American Sign Language in Shaping Literacy Development.

PURPOSE: This critical literature review examines how African American English (AAE) and American Sign Language (ASL)-including Black ASL-shape literacy development in Black Deaf students. It situates these linguistic systems within broader historical and contemporary contexts of literacy acquisition, highlighting systemic inequities in educational practices that marginalize nonstandard dialects and visual languages. Understanding these dynamics is essential to developing more inclusive and effective literacy instruction that honors the linguistic identities of Black Deaf learners. METHOD: Dr

Outcomes of adherence to play therapy in children with cerebral palsy: a clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP)is an umbrella term covering a group of non-progressive, but often changing, motor impairment syndromes secondary to lesions or anomalies of the brain arising in the early stages of development. Play is an occupation of childhood. Through play children improve performance skills. Research shows that play therapy has a positive effect on improving motor skills in children. Games in a way stimulate the nervous system and make the child active, they create vitality and nerve readiness which cause excitement and interaction of sensory and perceptual parts and decisio

Delayed Sternal Closure After Pediatric Heart Transplant.

Delayed sternal closure (DSC) is frequently used after pediatric heart transplantation when immediate closure may compromise hemodynamics or respiratory mechanics. However, limited data describe the timing, safety, infection risk, and physiologic effects of DSC in this population. We aimed to characterize the use of DSC after pediatric heart transplantation, including time to closure, infectious complications, and changes in hemodynamic and respiratory parameters using both electronic health record data and high-fidelity continuous monitoring. We conducted a retrospective descriptive study at

Nutrition security screening in clinical care: a feasibility and implementation evaluation in family medicine and subspecialty clinics.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition insecurity (NI), or limited access to nutritious foods that support health, is increasingly recognized as relevant to health and distinct from food insecurity (FI). However, its integration into clinical assessment remains largely untested. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to evaluate the feasibility of implementing a 2-item Nutrition Security Screener (NSS) alongside the Hunger Vital Sign, an existing FI screener, within a large integrated health system. METHODS: The NSS and FI screener were embedded into both Epic (electronic health record) and MyChart (patient portal) i

Exercise Training and Heart Rate Variability: A Guided Optimization of Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Cardiometabolic Disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To examine the role of exercise training (ET), cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and heart rate variability (HRV)-guided training in reducing cardiometabolic risk associated with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), obesity, and metabolic syndrome (MetS), and to discuss the emerging clinical utility of wearable HRV-monitoring devices. RECENT FINDINGS: Low CRF is one of the strongest predictors of all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, often surpassing traditional CVD risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and T2DM. Increasing evidence supports CRF as a c

Efficacy of Polypodium vulgare L. root decoction in symptom management of hospitalized patients with severe acute respiratory infection: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory infections remain a major cause of global morbidity and mortality, particularly in low-resource settings where supportive treatment options are limited. Identifying safe, accessible adjunctive therapies is therefore a clinical priority. This study examined whether Polypodium vulgare L. root decoction, used as an adjunct to standard care, could influence prespecified longitudinal clinical and laboratory parameters, particularly vital-sign and oxygenation trajectories, during the 14-day follow-up period in adults hospitalized with mild to moderate severe acut

Resting heart rate - The forgotten risk factor? Comparison of resting heart rate and hypertension as predictors of all-cause mortality in 692,217 adults in Asia and Europe.

BACKGROUND: Resting Heart Rate (RHR) is commonly viewed as a reflection of underlying co-morbidities and not an independent risk factor. Here we compared whether high RHR (80-99 beats/min) and hypertension (blood pressure, BP ≥140/90 mmHg) independently predict all-cause mortality in 692,217 adults from Asia and Europe. METHODS: Taiwan MJ cohort constituted of 636,064 adults (1994-2017) and the HUNT cohort of 56,153 Norwegian adults (1995-1997). Both cohorts were followed for about 25 years. We report adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause mortality, and life expectancy were calculated.

Relationship between Preoperative and Postoperative Peripheral Oxygen Saturation and Malignant Brain Edema in Stroke Patients Undergoing Mechanical Thrombectomy.

INTRODUCTION: As the fifth vital sign, peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) remains understudied in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy (MT). This study aimed to investigate the association between perioperative SpO2 levels and malignant brain edema (MBE) development in MT-treated AIS patients. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed consecutive stroke patients who achieved successful recanalization through MT between May 2017 and February 2023. Noninvasive SpO2 measurements were obtained pre- and postoperatively. Regression analysis was carried out to assess t

Perioperative anesthesia management for elderly patients with permanent pacemakers undergoing retropubic prostatectomy in Ethiopia East Africa: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKROUND: Perioperative anesthesia management for elderly patients with permanent pacemakers is complex, particularly in low-income countries. Preoperative pacemaker assessment and adjusting to asynchronous mode are crucial to avoid adverse events. Positioning electrocautery below the umbilicus and planning anesthesia to minimize pacemaker interference can reduce perioperative complications. This case involves an elderly male undergoing retropubic prostatectomy with a permanent pacemaker in dual-chamber, rate-modulated mode, without changing it to asynchronous mode, highlighting a rare anesth

Case Report: Robot-assisted sacral fracture reduction with patient-specific finite element planning.

BACKGROUND: Sacral fractures are typically caused by high-energy trauma. They often disrupt the pelvic ring and pose complex anatomical challenges, as the sacrum is surrounded by critical structures-including blood vessels, nerves, and internal organs. Traditional open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) can restore anatomical alignment but requires extensive tissue exposure. This exposure leads to greater tissue trauma, prolonged recovery, and higher risks of infection, hemorrhage, or nerve damage. For these reasons, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is preferred. However, MIS demands high
