Background: In 2020, the World Health Organization declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern due to the global outbreak of SARS-CoV-2. Recognized as a severe and highly contagious disease, it affected both the adult and pediatric population. However, due to the early timing of the pandemic, limited research was conducted in the perinatal field, leaving many questions regarding the true impact of maternal transmission to fetuses and its consequences during the neonatal period. Methods: In this case series, we reviewed data from ten newborns delivered in the Instituto Nacional

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a highly prevalent arrhythmia and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Although AF is not a primarily immunologic disorder, increasing clinical, translational, and experimental evidence indicates that leukocytes can modify substrate vulnerability to AF. In this review, we summarize how neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, B cells, T cells, mast cells, and less-studied leukocyte populations contribute to AF initiation, maintenance, and complications. We first outline core electrophysiologic mechanisms of AF, including focal ectopic activity and re-entry. We then

Secondary immune deficiencies, in which the immune system is weakened or compromised by another factor, have become prevalent. Secondary immune deficiencies are particularly pertinent in aged people because numerous etiologies cause immune dysfunction in this population. Immunosenescence is characterized by inflammaging, cellular senescence, thymic involution, reduced naive T- and B-cell output, restricted antigen receptor diversity, and impaired innate immune cell function, leading to increased susceptibility to infection and diminished vaccine responsiveness. Malnutrition is common in aged p

Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant clinical and public health problem for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly those requiring hemodialysis (HD). This population is particularly vulnerable due to the profound alteration of the immune response characteristic of CKD, which significantly increases the risk of reactivation of latent TB. The Mantoux test, for example, is not suitable for diagnosis due to the low sensitivity of these patients and the high rate of false positives due to vaccination. In contrast, IGRAs (interferon-gamma release assays) show superior sensitivity and

The school environment is essential for forming healthy habits, and having validated scales measuring sleep and wakefulness behaviours is critical for addressing adolescent sleep hygiene. Validation of such tools enables us to accurately assess sleep habits and design and implement more effective interventions that enhance young people's well-being and academic performance. This study aimed to adapt and culturally validate the Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale (ASHS) for Spanish-speaking adolescents, ensuring that the included items adequately reflected this population's cultural practices and sl

The health implications of prolonged wildfire smoke exposure - such as that seen during the 2019-2020 Australian bushfires - are a major concern in public health, not only in Australia but in many fire-prone areas globally. One group identified as potentially more susceptible to smoke exposure than the general population are pregnant women. Based on a study of how pregnant women and parents with newborn babies experienced the bushfire smoke event in Canberra and the NSW southeast coast, the paper examines how the placenta was figured across two domains during this time. The first domain consid

Folic acid supplementation during the periconceptional period is a well-established strategy to prevent neural tube defects (NTDs). However, emerging uncertainties surrounding optimal dosage, alternative folate forms, duration of use, and the role of genetic variability have sparked scientific and policy debates. In Brazil, these challenges are amplified by unique contextual factors, including the routine distribution of high-dose folic acid (5000 µg) through the public health system, social vulnerability, low adherence, and limited population-specific evidence for the country's highly admixed

BACKGROUND: There is globally proliferation of pathological gambling among the adolescent population. This public health problem requires the development of effective preventive strategies based on the risk factors. The aim of this study is to analyse the social determinants of health which may be predictors of online and face-to-face gambling in young people.
METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out using the Survey on Drug Use in Secondary Education in Spain, ESTUDES (2021), as the main data collection tool. The selected sample consisted of N = 22 321.

The visibility and care of transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people is an important component of gynecology. Transmasculine individuals require routine gynecologic and preventative care. Guidelines can be extrapolated from the cisgender female population, and using affirming language, acknowledging the challenges patients face with pelvic examination, and discussing individual gynecologic needs are important components of care. Transmasculine patients may seek hysterectomy for gender affirmation from gynecologists. Unique nuances exist in the considerations needed when preparing for hystere

Cancer patients exhibit an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), with VTE being the second leading cause of morbidity and mortality in these patients. The implementation of lockdowns following the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in decreased mobility and delayed access to care, thus further increasing the susceptibility to VTE. Cancer patients may also be at a higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and have been shown to be more likely to experience severe COVID-19 disease compared to patients without cancer. Given that both cancer and COVID-19 exhibit a hypercoagulable state, stasis of

Nutrition status plays a critical role in pressure injury (PI) healing and yet the available literature, especially in pediatric patients, is limited. Critically ill pediatric patients are at an increased risk of skin integrity compromise and PI development. Adequate nutritional intake can often be challenging to achieve in this population and immobility and illness present additional obstacles to maintaining skin integrity in this vulnerable population. Despite the unique nutritional challenges and needs of this group, there is no standardized approach to macro- and micronutrient management a

India is home to the most significant number of tuberculosis (TB) cases around the globe. The COVID-19 crisis has deeply perturbed most of the essential TB services in India. Regulating TB is difficult in a densely populated country like India due to latent TB infection in millions of Indians, which can reactivate at any point in the future. Due to the ongoing pandemic, healthcare workers have been diverted to activities implemented for effective COVID-19 management, leaving a meager workforce to help deal with TB management. Integrating TB and COVID-19 to augment India's health outreach is th

Geriatric syndromes are multifactorial conditions that are prevalent in older adults. Geriatric syndromes are believed to develop when an individual experiences accumulated impairments in multiple systems that compromise their compensatory ability. In older adults with cancer, the presence of a geriatric syndrome is common and may increase the complexity of cancer treatment. In addition, the physiologic stress of cancer and cancer treatment may precipitate or exacerbate geriatric syndromes. Common geriatric syndromes include falls, cognitive syndromes and delirium, depression, and polypharmacy

PURPOSE: Understanding the root causes of the substantial disparities in risk and protective factors among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adolescents is essential to the development and expansion of resources and supports for this vulnerable population. This study examines differences in emotional distress, bullying victimization, and protective factors among TGD high school students in city, suburban, town, and rural locations.
METHODS: Data come from a statewide school-based survey conducted in Minnesota in 2016 (n = 2,168 TGD youth). Analysis of covariance models were used to predict

Depression in the context of dementia is common and contributes to poorer outcomes in individuals and those who care for them. Non-pharmacological treatments are the preferred initial approach to managing these symptoms but data in support of these are scarce. There are a number of pharmacological treatment options available to clinicians but efficacy is uncertain and concern about potential side effects in an aging and vulnerable population needs to be taken into consideration. This review aims to provide a concise overview of pharmacological treatments for depression in dementia. Antidepress

PURPOSE: Controversy exists as to if, and when, gender affirmative (GA) treatment should be offered to individuals with gender dysphoria (GD) and co-existing psychosis. Concerns exist regarding a high risk of misdiagnosis, regret afterward due to impulsive decision making, and deterioration of psychotic symptoms. This case series aims at extending the sparse literature on GA treatment in this population by identifying challenges in diagnosis and treatment and offering recommendations to overcome them.
CASE SERIES: The authors present case descriptions of two transgender men and two transgende

Yellow fever (YF) is a haemorrhagic viral disease with a high case fatality rate. It is considered a reemerging infectious disease of remarkable importance. During the last outbreaks in Brazil (2016-2017), many cases of YF emerged despite high YF vaccination coverage in some areas. However, there are many areas and populations worldwide where vaccination coverage has been low for years (e.g. Nigeria), which increases the risk of major epidemics in such areas, as would be the case in many of the American territories. Several factors, including the vast border and migratory status of Brazil, the

Solid organ transplant patients are vulnerable to suffering neurologic complications from a wide array of viral infections and can be sentinels in the population who are first to get serious complications from emerging infections like the recent waves of arboviruses, including West Nile virus, Chikungunya virus, Zika virus, and Dengue virus. The diverse and rapidly changing landscape of possible causes of viral encephalitis poses great challenges for traditional candidate-based infectious disease diagnostics that already fail to identify a causative pathogen in approximately 50% of encephaliti

In the aftermath of many disasters the silence is punctuated by the crying of infants, hungry infants. The aim of this paper is to discuss ethical issues in feeding infants after disasters. The Asia Pacific region generates 25% of the world's GDP, but experiences 45% of natural disasters and 42% of the economic losses due to disasters. The region has 61% of the world's population, but 86% of the population affected by disasters. Breastfeeding, exclusive to six months and continuing thereafter, is important for growth and the health of the infant in the short term and later in life. In most nat
