Background/Objectives. Multi-drug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms pose a significant challenge in healthcare settings, particularly with beta-lactam-resistant Gram-negative bacteria and glycopeptide-resistant enterococci. Culture represents the most reliable technique in determining their presence within surveillance swabs. However, it requires a long time-to-result (TTR) and shows low sensitivity. Molecular techniques integrate diagnostic procedures, allowing TTR reduction and precise identification of genes. Methods. During our usual surveillance campaign, we had the opportunity to evaluate t

The microbiological safety of urban rivers that flow through cities is crucial to local public health. However, detailed insights into the key characteristics of pathogens in urban rivers remain limited due to the lack of efficient high-throughput analysis tools. In this study, a comprehensive profiling of potential pathogens, antibiotic-resistant pathogens (ARPs), and multidrug-resistant pathogens (MDRPs) in the Hai River, which runs through the central city of Tianjin, was conducted using metagenomic assembled genome (MAG) analysis. Of the 436 recovered MAGs assigned to 430 species, 110 MAGs

BACKGROUND: Chronic leg ulcers are hard to treat and can be a burden, particularly in resource-limited settings where diagnosis is a challenge. Staphylococcus aureus is among the common bacteria isolated from chronic wounds with a great impact on wound healing, particularly in patients with co-morbidities. Antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence factors in Staphylococcus aureus isolates were assessed to support healthcare professionals to make better therapeutic choices, and importantly to curb the development and spread of antibiotic resistance.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study involved

BACKGROUND: Understanding the biology of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is crucial to unlocking insights for new targets in our fight against this antimicrobial resistant priority pathogen. Although proteomics and metabolomic profiling offer the potential to elucidating such biological markers, reports of methodological approaches for carrying this out in S. aureus isolates remain limited. We describe the use of a dual-functionality methanol extraction method for the concurrent extraction of protein and metabolites from S. aureus and report on the comparative analysis of th

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is a life-threatening and challenging pathogen. In addition, it accounts for numerous serious infections, particularly among immunocompromised patients. Resistance to nearly all clinically used antibiotics and their ability to spread this resistance is one of the most important concerns related to this bacterium.
OBJECTIVES: This study describes different molecular mechanisms of two multidrug-resistant A. baumannii isolates obtained from endotracheal aspirates collected from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), Ain Shams University Hospit

INTRODUCTION: Multiple studies have shown that typhoid fever is endemic in developing countries characterized by poor hygiene. A unique way of Salmonella Typhi (S.Typhi) pathogenicity is establishing a persistent, usually asymptomatic carrier state in some infected individuals who excrete large numbers of bacteria in faeces. This study aimed to determine the isolation rate of S.Typhi from blood and stool samples among cases and asymptomatic individuals in the Mukuru informal settlement and identify antibiotic resistance patterns within the same population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We recruited

The emergence of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria underscores the need to define genetic vulnerabilities that can be therapeutically exploited. The Gram-negative pathogen, Acinetobacter baumannii, is considered an urgent threat due to its propensity to evade antibiotic treatments. Essential cellular processes are the target of existing antibiotics and a likely source of new vulnerabilities. Although A. baumannii essential genes have been identified by transposon sequencing, they have not been prioritized by sensitivity to knockdown or antibiotics. Here, we take a systems biology appr

The erythromycin polyketide compound TMC-154 is a secondary metabolite that is isolated from the rhizospheric fungus Clonostachys rogersoniana associated with Panax notoginseng, which possesses antibacterial activity. However, its antibacterial mechanism has not been investigated thus far. In this study, proteomics coupled with bioinformatics approaches was used to explore the antibacterial mechanism of TMC-154. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis indicated that eight signaling pathways were associated with TMC-154, including oxidative phosphorylation, cationic antimicrobial peptide (CAMP) resist

Antimicrobial resistance is a global health challenge caused by the ability of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, protozoans and viruses to survive the effects of drugs that hitherto were effective against them. This study sought to investigate the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and their corresponding molecular determinants in fish farms of the Central and Western Regions of Ghana. Management practices and antibiotic use at the fish farms were obtained through the administration of a questionnaire. Coliform and Gram-positive bacterial loads of catfish (Clarias gariepinus), t

Crop losses to plant pathogens are a growing threat to global food security and more effective control strategies are urgently required. Biofumigation, an agricultural technique where Brassica plant tissues are mulched into soils to release antimicrobial plant allelochemicals called isothiocyanates (ITCs), has been proposed as an environmentally friendly alternative to agrochemicals. Whilst biofumigation has been shown to suppress a range of plant pathogens, its effects on plant pathogenic bacteria remain largely unexplored. Here, we used a laboratory model system to compare the efficacy of di
