Pilot performance with blood alcohol concentrations below 0.04%.

The effects of a low (less than 0.04%) BAC on pilot performance were investigated in a series of four experiments in which pilots flew a light aircraft simulator under alcohol and placebo conditions. The mean BACs of subjects when starting and finishing the test sessions were 0.037% and 0.028%, respectively. Two of the experiments involved demanding flight tasks under instrument meteorological conditions: complicated departure, holding, and approach procedures in one case; and VOR-use intersection problems in the other. The other two experiments involved ILS approaches under turbulence, cross

Alcoholism detection markers in blood samples of road users.

Alcoholics as participants in road traffic are an international problem. In Germany a confiscated driving licence is only given back by the road traffic authorities to suspected alcoholics after a medico-psychological examination. The problem is: "How can alcoholics be detected among drunken road users." Traffic authorities use as a marker of alcoholism only the height of the blood alcohol concentration. The limit is a level of 1.6 g alcohol per kg blood, in some regions a level of 2.0 g/kg. Our studies show that the blood alcohol level is a very weak marker for alcoholism. Better markers are …

The association of trauma death and alcohol use in a rural state.

This study documents the strong association of alcohol in trauma-related deaths. In a previous study alcohol was present in 62.8% of homicide victims, 48.6% of unintentional injury fatality victims, 35.3% of persons who committed suicide, and 14.4% of persons who died of natural causes. The present study uses the legal limit of 100 mg/100 mL to include patients as having an alcohol-associated trauma death. In addition the study includes patients who die up to 20 hours after injury. These features of our study result in the lower reported frequency rates. Our study confirms that alcohol is stro

[Alcohol drinking and intrauterine dystrophia. Effects and significance in infancy].

In a prospective study intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) (less than 10. growth percentile at birth) was used as a predictor to diagnose intrauterine alcohol exposure. An interview about maternal alcohol consumption was performed prenatally--when IUGR was diagnosed by ultrasound--or postnatally. The children were followed up to 18 months of age. In 6/47 children we diagnosed various degrees of the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome FAS, with only one patient showing a full blown syndrome at birth. 5 patients could not be identified until the pediatric reexamination at the age of 8-18 months. IUGR and

Fetal alcohol syndrome and fatty acid ethyl esters.

Fetal alcohol syndrome is the leading known cause of mental retardation. The syndrome, defined as growth retardation, midface hypoplasia, and neurologic dysfunction, represents only part of the spectrum of fetal alcohol effects. The biochemical mechanism of teratogenesis is unknown. In adults, metabolites of ethanol, FAEE, are known to accumulate in major organs. The formation of FAEE is catalyzed by a family of enzymes, FAEE synthases. Our hypothesis is that accumulation of FAEE in the embryo results in fetal alcohol syndrome. We have developed assays for FAEE and FAEE synthase activity using

Autism in fetal alcohol syndrome: a report of six cases.

This paper reports on six children who all fulfill the criteria for fetal alcohol syndrome and have a history of maternal alcohol abuse during pregnancy, and who also fulfill the criteria for diagnosis of autism. Their behavior and natural history is compared with eight contrast FAS children, of similar ages and functional levels, who were free of autistic behaviors. The autistic FAS children were all moderately or severely retarded. Autistic behavior has not been commonly associated with prenatal alcohol exposure. Clinicians need to be aware of this potential dual diagnosis so that appropriat

Dose-ranging study of depot disulfiram in alcohol abusers.

The object of this early Phase 2 study was to determine the dosage of depot disulfiram (DSF) required to induce sustained sensitivity to alcohol. Sixteen abstinent alcohol abusers were studied in an unblinded ascending-dose trial of DSF suspended in either (1) 5% methylcellulose or (2) 0.1% polysorbate 80. Five pairs of subjects received a single subcutaneous dose of Formulation A (1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, or 3.5 g). Three pairs were treated with Formulation B (60, 75, or 90 mg/kg) plus an oral loading dose of DSF (15 mg/kg). Subjects were challenged with oral alcohol (0.15 g/kg) before treatment,

[Alcohol during pregnancy damages eye and vision development].

Maternal alcohol abuse during pregnancy causes malformations of the eyes with serious consequences to the vision of the affected children. A high percentage (up to 90 per cent) of children suffering from the fetal alcohol syndrome have eye abnormalities of different kinds. The most typical are hypoplasia of the optic nervehead and increased tortuosity of the retinal vessels, especially of the arteries, both occurring in up to half of the cases. Visual acuity is often reduced. Considering the developmental timing of different tissues of the eye, one can presume that there is a risk for deleteri

Annular pancreas and intermittent duodenal obstruction in an alcoholic adult.

Annular pancreas is a congenital anomaly which, though present at birth, may cause few symptoms until adulthood. A case of annular pancreas with intermittent duodenal obstruction is described in a 49-year-old alcoholic man. Few other entities cause such obstruction. In similar cases, clinical suspicion of annular pancreas may lead to prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Alcohol and smoking: risk factors for infectious eczematoid dermatitis?

Risk factors for infectious eczematoid dermatitis (IED) were analyzed in a study of males aged 19-50 years. The subjects were 43 IED patients and 226 controls with other skin diseases from the dermatological outpatient clinics of three University Hospitals in Finland. The patients' lifestyles were assessed by a self-administered questionnaire pertaining to two specified periods: the period 12 months before the onset of the skin disease and the period 12 months before the examination date. Recalled mean alcohol intake before the onset of the skin disease was 39.2 g/day for the IED patients and

Alcoholic beverage consumption prior to the onset of Wernicke's encephalopathy.

Alcoholic beverage consumption prior to the onset of Wernicke's encephalopathy is shown to be, primarily, full strength beer, although not always in large quantity, by 91% of 80 patients. Secondly, in order of frequency of consumption, was white wine sold in casks and consumed by 30% of patients. These findings have implications when decisions have to be made regarding which alcoholic beverages could be fortified with thiamine as a measure designed to prevent the development of the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

Autonomic and peripheral neuropathy in chronic alcoholic liver disease.

Peripheral and autonomic neuropathy has been evaluated, both by clinical and neurophysiological and by clinical methods, respectively, in 33 alcoholics, 20 of them cirrhotics. Nerve dysfunction was compared with liver function parameters, the Child-Pugh score, and parameters derived from ethanol consumption. Few relationships were obtained between the autonomic and peripheral nerve dysfunction, and between these and liver function impairment, although Pugh's score was higher when hyporeflexia and altered heart rate response to orthostatism were present. Thus, in the alcoholic, autonomic and pe…

[Characteristics of chronic alcoholism in patients with sensitive premorbid states].

Overall 69 patients with sensitive traits of character not reaching the degree of psychopathy, suffering from stage II chronic alcoholism were examined on a clinical basis. In the given patients' group, alcoholism manifested itself atypically. The initial lack of the protective nauseous and vomiting reflex and high tolerance, relative preservation of the quantitative control, no amnesia during drunkenness, temporal break between the formation of compulsive addiction and the abstinent syndrome, manifestation of compulsive addiction only in a state of alcoholic intoxication were recorded.
