Seminoma with hyperesterogenemia in a Yorkshire Terrier.

A male 8-year-old Yorkshire Terrier dog with unilateral cryptorchism was presented for investigation of reduced appetite and multifocal alopecia. Abdominal sonography and radiography demonstrated abnormal enlargement of left testicle in abdominal cavity. Both of the retroperitoneal cryptorchid testicle and the other contralateral testicle were removed surgically. The concentrations of testosterone and estradiol in blood collected from the jugular vein and the two spermatic veins were evaluated and the results revealed high estradiol concentration. The retroperitoneal cryptorchid testicle was e…

Primary idiopathic pseudopelade of brocq: five case reports.

Pseudopelade of Brocq (PPB) is a rare, idiopathic self-limiting hair disorder resulting in progressive cicatricial alopecia primarily involving the parietal scalp and vertex. The general pathogenesis of scarring alopecias has been focused on theories of stem cell failure and sebaceous gland destruction. Acquired immunity, Borrelia infection and senescence of follicular stem cell reservoir plays suspected role. It classically presents as porcelain white hypopigmented and slightly depressed atrophic plaque. There is no standard treatment for PPB. Here, we present five cases which were labeled as…

Dermoscopic findings in scalp psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis; two new signs; signet ring vessel and hidden hair.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis are both chronic erythemato-squamous dermatoses that can involve the scalp. It may be difficult to differentiate these two diseases when there is isolated scalp involvement. Recently, trichoscopy is commonly used to differentiate noncicatricial alopecias including psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis that can lead to telogen effluvium (TE). OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to evaluate the trichoscopic figures that may help to differentiate scalp psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty one with scalp psoriasis…

Satoyoshi syndrome in a Caucasian girl improved with glucocorticoids--a clinical report.

Satoyoshi syndrome (OMIM 600705) is a rare disorder of unknown cause characterized by progressive painful intermittent muscle spasms, amenorrhea, alopecia, malabsorption, and skeletal abnormalities mimicking a skeletal dysplasia. In this report, we describe a Caucasian 12-year-old girl that presented with characteristic manifestations, including alopecia, muscle cramps, and short stature with onset at age 7. Prednisone 60 mg/m(2) every other day and amytriptiline 25 mg QD were administered. After 2 months, alopecia had significantly improved and muscle cramps had almost disappeared, so that gl…

Diagnosing and treating hair loss.

Physicians should be careful not to underestimate the emotional impact of hair loss for some patients. Patients may present with focal patches of hair loss or more diffuse hair loss, which may include predominant hair thinning or increased hair shedding. Focal hair loss can be further broken down into scarring and nonscarring. Scarring alopecia is best evaluated by a dermatologist. The cause of focal hair loss may be diagnosed by the appearance of the patch and examination for fungal agents. A scalp biopsy may be necessary if the cause of hair loss is unclear. Alopecia areata presents with smo…

A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo and Active Controlled Phase II Study to Evaluate the Safety and Efficacy of Novel Dutasteride Topical Solution (0.01%, 0.02%, and 0.05% w/v) in Male Subjects With Androgenetic Alopecia.

Introduction Oral dutasteride has demonstrated superiority over finasteride in treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA). We have developed a novel topical dutasteride formulation, which has shown promising efficacy, safety, and tolerability in preclinical studies. The present study objective is to compare the efficacy and safety of dutasteride topical solutions (0.01%, 0.02%, and 0.05% w/v) with placebo and oral finasteride (1 mg/day) in AGA males. Methods In this phase II study, 135 AGA males (20-60 years of age) were randomized to receive dutasteride topical solution (0.01%, 0.02%, 0.05% w/v), f…

Trichoscopy update 2011.

Trichoscopy performed with a handheld dermoscope or a videodermoscope became an indispensable tool in differential diagnosis of hair and scalp diseases. Current research is focusing on trichoscopy of: 1) non-cicatricial alopecia, 2) cicatricial alopecia, 3) hair shaft disorders, and 4) inflammatory scalp diseases. This review summarizes current knowledge in these four fields of research. In all non-cicatricial alopecias presence of empty follicular openings is a common trichoscopy finding. In alopecia areata black dots and micro-exclamation mark hairs and tapered hairs correlate with disease a…

Hair transplantation between identical twins.

Hair transplantation between monozygotic twins was used to repair a marked congenital, nonprogressive alopecia of the scalp. The alopecia was due to a follicular aplasia that, along with several other abnormalities of the integumentary system, affected only one of the twins. This case represents a unique application of isograft transplantation.

Lichen Planopilaris Arising between Two Linear Surgical Scars.

Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is a type of lymphocytic cicatricial alopecia, which can occur at unusual sites. It can be difficult to diagnose at an early stage and may be misdiagnosed as seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis in early stages before alopecia occurs. We report a rare case in which alopecia occurred between two long surgical scars on the scalp several years after surgery. Dermoscopy and biopsy led to a diagnosis of LPP. The localization of the lesions in our case suggests that oxidative stress from the failure of lymph flow might have induced LPP. Oral roxithromycin, a macrolide antibio…

Immunobiological studies on the alopecic (DEBR) rat.

The Dundee experimental bald rat (DEBR) has been proposed as an animal model of human alopecia areata, which is suspected of being an autoimmune disease. This study was carried out to establish whether the immunological changes observed in the lesional DEBR rat correlated with studies of human alopecia areata. The immune infiltrate was characterized using immunoperoxidase techniques on cryostat sections of vibrissa follicles. Indirect immunofluorescence was used to quantify the peripheral blood leucocytes. Some parallels were observed in the infiltration of human and DEBR rat follicles by T ly…

Yangxuebushen Decoction prevents cyclophosphamide-induced hair loss by inhibiting hair follicle apoptosis.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia is a skin condition that can impose a substantial psychological burden on affected individuals, and chemotherapy-induced alopecia remains one of the most distressing adverse effects of anticancer treatment. Since antiquity, medicinal plants have been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine to support hair growth. In the present study, we investigated whether Yangxuebushen Decoction (YXBSD) could promote hair regrowth and mitigate alopecia in a cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced mouse model. METHODS: A CYP-induced alopecia model was established in C57BL/6J mice (n = 5). Mi…

Long-term Clinical Outcomes of Autologous Non-activated Platelet-rich Plasma (A-PRP) Delivered Through Mechanical and Controlled Infiltration in Male and Female Androgenetic Alopecia: A 10-year Prospective Randomized Evaluator-blinded Study.

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common cause of progressive hair loss in men and women and is associated with significant psychosocial distress. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a regenerative therapy that stimulates follicular activity, angiogenesis, and dermal papilla activation through growth factor release. OBJECTIVES: This prospective randomized evaluator-blinded clinical trial evaluated the long-term efficacy and safety of autologous non-activated PRP (A-PRP) delivered through a standardized mechanical and controlled infiltration protocol. METHODS: Between January 2015…

Tremor Drugs in the Crosshairs.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata is a rare but debilitating adverse effect of drugs used in the treatment of tremors. Recurrent hair loss after different types of tremor medications has never been described before. CASE REPORT: We herein report the case of a 56-year-old tremor patient who we diagnosed with tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease. Unfortunately, she developed acute alopecia areata following the introduction of firstly levodopa/benserazide, secondly propranolol, and thirdly topiramate. DISCUSSION: Our case report highlights alopecia areata as a possible side effect to a variety of drug…

Anagen Effluvium after Neurointerventional Radiation: Trichoscopy as a Diagnostic Ally.

Minimally invasive procedures for vascular brain lesions are being performed more frequently. Radiation exposure caused by endovascular embolization of cerebral aneurysms may give rise to nonscarring scalp alopecia located in the treated area. Clinical and trichoscopic features of this type of alopecia are similar to alopecia areata (AA). Herein, we performed a comprehensive review to describe the clinical and trichoscopic characteristics of radiation-induced anagen effluvium. Predominant trichoscopic findings include black dots, yellow dots, short vellus hairs, and absence of exclamation mark…
