Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a chronic cholestatic disorder characterised by an immunological, and often granulomatous, attack on bile ducts leading to fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver failure and death. Vitamin C and D levels in Arab women and their newborn infants have been shown to be low. We investigated the prevalence of and risk factors for possible hypovitaminosis C and D in a convenience sample of 51 hospitalized children without clinical features of vitamin C or D deficiency. Iron status was assessed in a representative sample of 188 adolescents living in a medium-sized city in Poland. Dietary intakes were evaluated using records of diet over a period of seven consecutive days. This study was designed to assess the effect of vitamin C on arylamine N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity in Klebsiella pneumoniae by using HPLC to measure the acetylation of 2-aminofluorene (2-AF) with and without vitamin C. The effects of chloroquine and some other antimalarials on the immune responses in experimental animals have been examined. Chloroquine and quinine caused significant decrease of serum anti-SRBC haemagglutination titre. Chloroquine lowered the serum IgM level and also reduced plaque-forming cells in the spleen of mice. The delayed-type hypersensitivity responses to SRBC and the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis were also diminished in rats treated with chloroquine. Thus, the immunosuppressant activity of chloroquine may explain its efficacy in various types of immune disorders.

Fifty-six tuberculosis patients and twenty-eight control subjects were evaluated in a comprehensive investigation of cellular and humoral immune function in pulmonary TB.
