Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) have altered neurophysiology and present with symptoms that must be interpreted in the context of their specific neurologic injury. This is a case of a 16-year-old female adolescent with C5 American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale A SCI who presented with intractable nausea. Multiple etiologies for her nausea, including medication effect, metabolic and gastrointestinal disorders, autonomic dysreflexia, and mood disorder, were systematically ruled out. Due to the persistence of the patient's symptoms and suboptimal progression in her rehabili

Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS) are rare disorders affecting any part of the central, peripheral or autonomic nervous system that occur in association with cancer. Among cancer patients, less than 1% overall develop PNS. Anti-SOX1 antibodies' positive paraneoplastic neurological disorders are rare and are usually associated with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Here, we report a case of a 61-year-old male patient who presented with an unusual anti-SOX1 positive PNS. The right tibialis anterior showed noticeable low-amplitude motor unit potentials and high amplitude motor potentials i

BACKGROUND: Hyperactive autonomic nervous system (ANS) is among the postulated pathophysiologic mechanisms of takotsubo syndrome (TTS). Diabetes mellitus (DM) with its associated ANS peripheral neuropathy could exert a "protective" influence for the emergence of TTS.
METHODS: A patient-based meta-analysis of the data obtained from all patients presented individually was carried out, focusing on age, gender, and history of hypertension (HTN) and DM.
RESULTS: The prevalences of HTN and DM for all 2,342 patients, aged 61.1 ± 17.3, 85.1% female, were 37.4% and 9.5%, for patients ≥ 60 years old w

There is increasing interest in interventional therapies targeting the cardiac sympathetic nervous system to suppress ventricular arrhythmias. In this case report, we describe an 80-year-old patient with ischemic cardiomyopathy and multiple implantable cardioverter-defibrillator shocks due to refractory ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation who was unable to continue biweekly stellate ganglion block procedures using bupivacaine 0.25% for suppression of his arrhythmias. He had previously failed antiarrhythmic drug therapy with amiodarone, catheter ablation, and attempted surgical

Vagal atrial fibrillation (AF) remains an under-recognised entity, affecting younger patients often with structurally normal hearts. Although there remains no universal definition or diagnostic criteria, in this review we describe recognised triggers and associated features, including a well-established association with athletic training. We explore potential mechanisms, including the role of the autonomic nervous system and ganglionated plexi in initiating and maintaining arrhythmia. We discuss the limited evidence base addressing the question of progression to persistent AF, and debate the m

Variants of Guillain-Barre syndrome such as Bickerstaff encephalitis and Miller-Fisher syndrome have been reported. We report a 15-year-old boy who presented, after a prodromal illness, with 3-day progressive limb weakness, diplopia, and acute urinary retention. Clinically, he had horizontal gaze-evoked and upbeat nystagmus, bilateral extensor plantars in addition to quadriparesis and areflexia. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and spine was unremarkable and cerebral spinal fluid analysis showed lymphocytic pleocytosis. Nerve conduction study revealed symmetrical axonal neuropathy. BACKGROUND: Paragangliomas are neuroendocrine tumors derived from the extra-adrenal paraganglia of the autonomic nervous system. Only 3% of all paragangliomas are reported to occur in the head and neck region. The most common paraganglioma of the head and neck is the carotid body tumor. Only few cases have been described in the literature regarding the pediatric age group less than aged 14 years, mostly as case reports.
CASE REPORT: Our case describes a massive paraganglioma in the head and neck region occurring in a 3-year-old Arabic boy, for which surgical excision was not possible and radi

Premature infants are susceptible to a variety of life-threatening events. Underdeveloped cardiovascular control due to an immature autonomic nervous system can lead to recurrent bradycardias that reduce blood flow and oxygen to critical organs, and result in long-term developmental disabilities or sudden death. In this study, we investigate the use of a novel point process framework to model heart rate dynamics in premature infants, including the full range of bradycardia severity. We find that the lognormal distribution accurately models the R-R interval time series, due to the long-tail nat

Thought to be an autoimmune inflammatory CNS disease, multiple sclerosis (MS) involves multiple pathologies with heterogeneous clinical presentations. An impaired neurovisceral integration of cardiovascular modulation, indicated by sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction, is among common MS clinical presentations. ANS dysfunction could not only enhance MS inflammatory and neurodegenerative processes, but can also lead to clinical symptoms such as depression, fatigue, sleep disorder, migraine, osteoporosis, and cerebral hemodynamic impairments. Therefore, fact

Botulinum toxin A inhibits neuromuscular transmission. It has become a drug with many indications. The range of clinical applications has grown to encompass several neurological and non-neurological conditions. One of the most recent achievements in the field is the observation that botulinum toxin A provides benefit in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Although toxin blocks cholinergic nerve endings in the autonomic nervous system, it has also been shown that it does not block non-adrenergic non-cholinergic responses mediated by nitric oxide. This has promoted further interest in using

In this article, we define the construct of empathy and its relevance for counseling psychology. The importance of deficits in empathic processes for most of the psychological disorders is presented within the context of the social brain hypothesis (Frith, 2007). We provide a review of empirical research about the neural correlates of empathy in terms of both the central and peripheral nervous system. We present recent evidence on the cortical and subcortical regions involved in different dimensions of empathy-emotional contagion, cognitive and emotional empathy, and self-regulation. Regarding

Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is a relatively common heterogenous and multifactorial disorder, traditionally classified as neurogenic (less common but often more severe) or nonneurogenic (more common, with no direct signs of autonomic nervous system disease). The different clinical variants of orthostatic intolerance include initial, classical and delayed OH as well as postural tachycardia syndrome. Orthostatic instability may induce syncopal attacks either alone or in combination with other mechanisms, and is often dismissed as a precipitating factor. Moreover, prevalent OH is an independent r

OBJECTIVES: Symptoms of Asperger disorder (AD) in girls are often different from those in boys. In this study, the characteristics of girls with AD were examined.
METHODS: We retrospectively examined the records of 63 boys and 33 girls with AD. We evaluated the age, main problems, complications, and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (3rd Ed) scores.
RESULTS: About 73% of girls were diagnosed with AD between 10 and 15 years of age, and they had physical complications or problems in the autonomic nervous system. Girls scored significantly lower in Mathematics score, and Block Design

BACKGROUND: Physiological responses have been used in individuals with acquired disability to enable communicative interaction without motor movement. This study explored four autonomic nervous system (ANS) signals-electrodermal activity, skin temperature, cardiac patterns and respiratory patterns-to enable interaction with individuals born with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD).
METHOD: A series of case studies were conducted to teach a 15-year-old individual with PIMD to voluntarily control his ANS signals for the purposes of communicative interaction. Training was carr

Most people with diabetes develop severe complications of the autonomic nervous system; yet, the underlying causes of many diabetic-induced dysautonomias are poorly understood. Here we explore the idea that these dysautonomias results, in part, from a defect in synaptic transmission. To test this idea, we investigated cultured sympathetic neurons and show that hyperglycemia inactivates nAChRs through a mechanism involving an elevation in reactive oxygen species and an interaction with highly conserved cysteine residues located near the intracellular mouth of the nAChR channel. Consistent with

We tested a conceptual model involving the inter-relations among affective decision-making (indexed by a gambling task), autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms in a largely impoverished, inner city sample of first through third grade children (N=63, 54% male). The present study hypothesized that impaired affective decision-making and decreased sympathetic and parasympathetic activation would be associated with higher levels of ADHD and ODD symptoms, and that low sympathetic and parasympatheti

Knowledge of maternal stress and its direct influence on the developing embryo and fetus (prenate) can influence psychotherapeutic treatment decisions, especially when treating patients who are severely traumatized and dissociative. Not only may maternal stress alter prenate neurobiological attachment and stress systems in the limbic-hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (LHPA) and limbic-autonomic nervous system (L-ANS), but it may also shape the development of prenate 'fixed action patterns' built from primitive defensive reflex activation. As a result, the offspring's defensive, mating and ca

Paraneoplastic peripheral neuropathies constitute a heterogeneous group of conditions. A link between the tumor and the neuropathy has been demonstrated in a subgroup only. Definite paraneoplastic neuropathies correspond to neuropathies associated with antibodies reacting with antigens common to the peripheral nervous system and the cancer. Neuropathies associated with anti-Hu antibodies are the most frequent and consist mainly in subacute sensory neuronopathy. Sensory or sensory-motor neuropathies with anti-CV2 antibodies are less frequent. The link between the cancer and the neuropathy is le

Biofeedback can improve cutaneous problems that have an autonomic nervous system component. Examples include biofeedback of galvanic skin resistance (GSR) for hyperhidrosis and biofeedback of skin temperature for Raynaud's disease. Hypnosis may enhance the effects obtained by biofeedback. Cognitive-behavioral methods may resolve dysfunctional thought patterns (cognitive) or actions (behavioral) that damage the skin or interfere with dermatologic therapy. Responsive diseases include acne excoriée, atopic dermatitis, factitious cheilitis, hyperhidrosis, lichen simplex chronicus, needle phobia, n

Laser Doppler fluxmetry was used to analyze local blood flux in the anterior tibial muscle and the skin of the calf simultaneously during 3 min of hyperventilation. Examinations were performed in 10 controls and 10 patients with a hyperventilation syndrome in order to evaluate a possible different vascular response to the provocation test. During hyperventilation, mean muscle blood flux increased in both groups. In controls, flux augmented from 23.4 +/- 12.3 arbitrary units (AU) to 51.6 +/- 28.3 AU (p < 0.05) and in patients from 21.6 +/- 10.8 AU to 45.0 +/- 26.4 AU (p < 0.05). The changes of
