Methamphetamine and driving impairment.

Following a review of the effects of methamphetamine on human performance, actual driving and behavior were evaluated in 28 cases in which drivers arrested or killed in traffic accidents had tested positive for methamphetamine. The circumstances surrounding the arrest or accident were examined, together with any observations by the arresting officer regarding behavioral irregularities. The investigators also made a determination of culpability. Most of the arrests resulted from accidents in which the driver was determined to be culpable. Typical driving behaviors included drifting out of the l

Long-term psychological and physiological effects of heat stroke.

Heat stroke leads only rarely to permanent neurological deficits and the convalescence is almost complete. There are, however, some sporadic descriptions of disturbances that lasted for up to 4 months. Little has been mentioned in the literature on residual changes in personality and late neurological side effects. The present study was conducted to follow systematically late personality and behavioral abnormalities in a population of heat stroke victims. This study analyzed 21 young subjects (age: 21 +/- 2 years), who were inflicted by heat stroke. They were invited for a physiological and ps

Behavioral, Psychological, and Metabolic Characteristics of Adults with Co-Occurring Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Obesity: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and obesity are highly prevalent and often co-occur, yet it remains unclear how the presence of both conditions relates to biological, behavioral, and psychological outcomes compared with either condition alone. Understanding this subgroup is crucial to improving assessments and treatment outcomes. Objective: To characterize biological, psychological, and behavioral parameters among individuals living with obesity (LWO) and GAD (GAD + LWO), compared with those with only one condition (GAD or LWO) and healthy controls. The primary outcome was to ch

Exploring Serotonin-1A receptor function in the effects of buspirone on cognition by molecular receptor expression and EEG analytical studies.

Buspirone, a commonly prescribed medication for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), is gaining attention for its narrow window of side effects such as lack of physical dependence, non-sedative properties as compared to other anxiolytic drugs. Its dose-specific therapeutic effects beyond anxiety highlights its clinical significance. Pharmacologically, buspirone activates serotonin-1A pre-synaptic autoreceptors and post-synaptic heteroreceptors which modulate serotonergic neurotransmission induced behavioral changes such as anxiolytic and nootropic effects. This study explored change in neural a

Acute administration of lovastatin had no pronounced effect on motor abilities, motor coordination, gait nor simple cognition in a mouse model of Angelman syndrome.

Translational research is needed to discover pharmacological targets and treatments for the diagnostic behavioral domains of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), including autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and intellectual disabilities (IDs). One NDD, associated with ASD and ID, is Angelman Syndrome (AS). AS is a rare genetic NDD for which there is currently no cure nor effective therapeutics. The genetic cause is known to be the loss of expression from the maternal allele of ubiquitin protein ligase E3A (UBE3A). The Ube3a maternal deletion mouse model of AS reliably demonstrates behavioral phe

Mitigating organophosphate nerve agent, soman (GD), induced long-term neurotoxicity: Saracatinib, a Src Tyrosine Kinase inhibitor, as a potential countermeasure.

BACKGROUND: Acute exposure to soman (GD), an organophosphate nerve agent (OPNA), irreversibly inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE), induces seizures, and could be fatal if not treated immediately. Existing medical countermeasures (MCMs- atropine, oximes, and benzodiazepines) mitigate the acute life-threatening cholinergic symptoms but have limited protection against long-term neurological consequences in survivors. This indicates a need for an effective adjunct therapy to mitigate cognitive, behavioral, and brain pathology associated with OPNA exposure. Saracatinib (SAR), a selective Src tyros

Cognition and behavior in adults with neurofibromatosis type 1.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) is a congenital neurocutaneous disorder. As NF1 is incurable and presents with a wide range of physical and mental symptoms, knowledge of neurocognitive and behavioral functioning can be an important aid in understanding their functional impact, and developing treatment options. To date, studies in children with NF1 have shown dysfunction in several domains, but much less is known about cognition and behavior in adults with NF1. The present study describes the neuropsychological phenotype of adults with NF1 based on comprehensive clinical examination

Early recognition of pain: improving colic outcomes in horses in Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Limited knowledge exists on recognition and treatment of equine abdominal pain in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed at finding indicators for recognizing abdominal pain, evaluating responses to clinical and behavioral changes, and assessing the impact of timely referral on colic outcomes in a suburban region of Senegal. The final goal was to identify factors that may be leveraged to improve the outcome of horses presented for abdominal pain in Senegal. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, observational cohort study. METHODS: Data from 26 foals and 40 adult horses referre

Sleep problem screening of young children by speech-language pathologists: A mixed-methods feasibility study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Poor sleep in young children imperils language learning and use. Both sleep and language problems are prevalent in early childhood. Speech-language pathologists are in a unique position to expand surveillance of sleep problems, which in turn may contribute to communication difficulties. We conducted a feasibility study of speech-language pathologist screening for behavioral sleep problems and sleep-disordered breathing symptoms at a multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment center. METHODS: Speech-language pathologists administered screeners to parents of 2-6-year-olds: th

Comprehensive behavioral analysis of heterozygous Syngap1 knockout mice.

AIMS: Synaptic Ras GTPase-activating protein 1 (SYNGAP1) regulates synaptic plasticity through AMPA receptor trafficking. SYNGAP1 mutations have been found in human patients with intellectual disability (ID) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Almost every individual with SYNGAP1-related ID develops epilepsy, and approximately 50% have ASD. SYNGAP1-related ID is estimated to account for at least 1% of ID cases. In mouse models with Syngap1 mutations, strong cognitive and affective dysfunctions have been reported, yet some findings are inconsistent across studies. To further understand the beha

Oral sensitization to whey proteins induces age- and sex-dependent behavioral abnormality and neuroinflammatory responses in a mouse model of food allergy: a potential role of mast cells.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence has strengthened the association of food allergy with neuropsychiatric symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and autism. However, underlying mechanisms by which peripheral allergic responses lead to behavioral dysfunction are yet to be determined. Allergen-activated mast cells may serve as mediators by releasing histamine and other inflammatory factors that could adversely affect brain function. We hypothesized that eliciting food allergy in experimental animals would result in behavioral changes accompanied by mast cell accumulation in the brain. Our hypothesis wa

Levels of Salivary Sialic Acid in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder; Could It Be Related to Stereotypes and Hyperactivity?

OBJECTIVE: Sialic acid (Sia) is an essential nutrient for brain development, learning, memory and cognition and plays a role in neurodevelopment of infants. The aim of this study was to determine whether Sia levels are significantly associated with the autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: Forty-six ASD children and 30 typically developing children aged 3 to 10 years were included in the study. Behavioral symptoms in ASD children was assessed by the Autism Behavior Checklist (AuBC), the Childhood Autism Rating Scale, and the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC). After the collection of saliva …

Increasing valued behaviors precedes reduction in suffering: Findings from a randomized controlled trial using ACT.

BACKGROUND: Psychological flexibility theory (PFT) suggests three key processes of change: increases in value-directed behaviors, reduction in struggle with symptoms, and reduction in suffering. We hypothesized that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) would change these processes and that increases in valued action and decreases in struggle would precede change in suffering. METHOD: Data were derived from a randomized clinical trial testing ACT (vs. waitlist) for treatment-resistant patients with primary panic disorder with/without agoraphobia (n = 41). Valued behavior, struggle, and suff

Lithium and valproate prevent methylphenidate-induced mania-like behaviors in the hole board test.

Manic bipolar is diagnosed by psychomotor agitation, increased goal-directed activity, insomnia, grandiosity, excessive speech, and risky behavior. Animal studies aimed to modeling mania are commonly based in psychostimulants-induced hyperlocomotion. The exploration of other behaviors related with mania is mandatory to investigate this phase of bipolar disorder in animals. In this study, the hole board apparatus was suggested for evaluating mania-like behaviors induced by the psychostimulant methylphenidate. The treatment with methylphenidate (10mg/kg, ip) increased locomotion in the open fiel

Psychologists' judgments of psychologically aggressive actions when perpetrated by a husband versus a wife.

Research literature suggests that clinical judgments of men's versus women's behavior and symptoms typically rate the men as more pathological and dangerous. To determine whether this view would extend to assessments of psychologically aggressive actions, two separate versions of a survey listing potentially psychologically abusive behaviors perpetrated by either a wife toward her husband or the identical actions perpetrated by a husband toward his wife were sent to a nationwide sampling of practicing psychologists. Results indicated that psychologists, irrespective of demographics, rated the

Motor dyscontrol in narcolepsy: rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep without atonia and REM sleep behavior disorder.

Narcolepsy involves abnormalities of rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, including a short latency to the onset of REM sleep, hypnagogic hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. In addition, persistence of muscle tone by electromyographic criteria or excessive muscle twitching during REM sleep or both have been reported in treated and untreated narcoleptic patients. We report that another previously described abnormality of REM sleep, REM sleep behavior disorder, may also be a symptom of narcolepsy. This disorder was found in 10 narcoleptic patients during routine clinical evaluations involving polyso

Neuropeptide TIP39 as a pluripotent brain molecule and its potential functions in postpartum depression.

BACKGROUND: The tuberoinfundibular peptide of 39 residues (TIP39) is a small peptide first extracted in 1997, which has garnered limited research attention. It belongs to the parathyroid hormone (PTH)-related peptides family and specifically binds the parathyroid receptor type 2 (PTH2R). It is gaining attention for its roles in mood regulation, maternal behavior, and social functions. Its potential in modulating these processes possibly positions TIP39 as an underexplored candidate for exploring complex physiological functions of postpartum depression. AIMS: Given the accumulating evidence of
