A Remotely Controlled Nanosystem for Spatiotemporally Specific Gene Regulation and Combinational Tumor Therapy.

The dearth of technologies that allow gene modulation and therapy with high spatiotemporal precision remains a bottleneck in biomedical research and applications. Here we present a near-infrared (NIR) light-controlled nanosystem that allows spatiotemporally controlled regulation of gene expression and thus combinational tumor therapy. The nanosystem is built by engineering of an enzyme-activatable antisense oligonucleotide and further combination with an upconversion nanoparticle-based photodynamic system and a mitochondria localization signal. The system relies on photodynamic effect-induced

Patentability of Parthenogenic Stem Cells: International Stem Cell Corporation v. Comptroller General of Patents.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has recently issued a ruling in Case C-364/13 International Stem Cell Corporation v. Comptroller General of Patents Designs and Tademarks (Case) that aims at harmonising the patenting practices regarding interpretation of Article 6.2.c of Directive 98/44/EC (Biotech Patent Directive) in respect of patentability of human parthenogenic stem cells (hpSCs). The Case alters the patenting regime for human embryonic stem cell (hESC) applications, by stating that moral restrictions against hESC-patents are only applicable to such cells derived from embryos that had

High Diversity and Novel Enteric Viruses in Fecal Viromes of Healthy Wild and Captive Thai Cynomolgus Macaques (Macaca fascicularis).

Cynomolgus macaques are common across South East Asian countries including Thailand. The National Primate Research Center of Thailand, Chulalongkorn University (NPRCT-CU) captures wild-borne cynomolgus macaque for research use. Limited information is available on the enteric viruses and possible zoonotic infections into or from cynomolgus macaques. We characterized and compare the fecal virome of two populations; healthy wild-originated captive cynomolgus macaques (n = 43) reared in NPRCT-CU and healthy wild cynomolgus macaques (n = 35). Over 90% of recognized viral sequence reads amplified fr

Motor Neuron Diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa: The Need for More Population-Based Studies.

Motor neuron diseases (MNDs) are devastating neurological diseases that are characterised by gradual degeneration and death of motor neurons. Major types of MNDs include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). These diseases are incurable, with limited disease-modifying treatment options. In order to improve MND-based biomedical research, drug development, and clinical care, population-based studies will be important. These studies, especially among less-studied populations, might identify novel factors controlling disease susceptibility and resistance. To evalua

A bi-national perspective on continuing medical education.

This paper presents a review and comparison of qualitative improvements in the organization, needs assessment, educational methodology, evaluation, and research in continuing medical education (CME) in the United States and Canada. Although accreditation now establishes minimal standards for CME and reduces the chances of irresponsible programs, some organizational issues (such as commercial sponsorship) and educational issues (how to "accredit" journal reading) remain unresolved. There are many examples of excellent, innovative CME programs offered by medical schools, and specialty societies

A history of thought on brain injury in head-hitting animals.

Throughout time, humans have observed animals performing head impact behaviors in nature and have wondered whether they sustain brain injury. The resulting literature spans centuries and provides both valuable insight and misguided theories. Bighorn sheep and woodpeckers are the two main species studied in this regard and, simultaneously, in current popular culture they are often represented as being immune to brain injury. How did this narrative arise, and is it accurate? This historical review explores these questions by tracing the development of human thought on animal head impacts from pr

Priorities in tuberculosis research in India.

India accounts for nearly 30% of all tuberculosis cases in the world today and more adults in India die from TB than from any other infectious disease. The problems of HIV and multidrug resistance will make tuberculosis epidemic in India much worse unless urgent action is taken. DOTS is being applied on individual basis in the country. Maintaining the momentum in order to achieve national coverage in a phased manner, while maintaining the quality of services will require constructive commitment from all sectors, both within and outside government. This much be accompanied by additional researc

Bibliometric and knowledge-map analysis of research on robot-assisted vascular interventional surgery (2015-2025).

Vascular interventional procedures are minimally invasive but remain highly dependent on operator expertise and are associated with occupational radiation exposure and technically demanding catheter and guidewire manipulation. By integrating precision motion control, force sensing, haptic feedback, image-guided navigation, and teleoperation, robot-assisted vascular interventional surgery (RVIS) has emerged as an interdisciplinary field spanning robotics, biomedical engineering, and interventional medicine. However, its global research landscape, intellectual base, research hotspots, and themat

Culturally supported health promotion to See, Treat, Prevent (SToP) skin infections in Aboriginal children living in the Kimberley region of Western Australia: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: While there are many skin infections, reducing the burden of scabies and impetigo for remote living Aboriginal people, particularly children remains challenging. Aboriginal children living in remote communities have experienced the highest reported rate of impetigo in the world and are 15 times more likely to be admitted to hospital with a skin infection compared to non-Aboriginal children. Untreated impetigo can develop into serious disease and may contribute to the development of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD). As the largest organ protecting the bo

'They (researchers) don't have to justify their presence, why do we have to justify ours?': The political economy of community advisory boards in tuberculosis research.

Community Advisory Boards (CABs), adopted from the HIV response, have become the most institutionalised form of community engagement in tuberculosis (TB) research. However, little work has examined the historical-political processes shaping their development or how these dynamics influence community participation in TB research governance. This qualitative study draws on 28 semi-structured interviews with TB advocates, community engagement practitioners, and TB CABs representatives across countries and levels of global health governance. Using the metaphor of "space" drawn from participatory d
