We report two cases of reversible brainstem hypertensive encephalopathy (RBHE) with unusual magnetic resonance (MR) findings. Patient 1, an 85-year-old man without a history of hypertension, developed acute severe hypertension and mild consciousness disturbance as the only symptoms. Patient 2, a 46-year-old man with an untreated hypertension, presented with extremely high blood pressure and general fatigue, vertigo, and mild dysarthria as the initial manifestations. In these patients, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and T2-weighted MR images revealed diffuse hyperintensities in the

Pediatric high-grade gliomas represent a heterogeneous group of tumors that accounts for 15%-20% of all pediatric central nervous system tumors. These neoplasms predominantly involve the supratentorial hemispheres or the pons, in which case the tumors are usually called diffuse brainstem gliomas. The diagnosis of supratentorial neoplasms is dependent on their histologic appearance. The maximum possible surgical resection is always attempted since the degree of surgical resection is the main prognostic factor for these patients. Older children (>3 years) with supratentorial neoplasms undergo a

A previously healthy 69-year-old man developed a progressive neurological illness with bulbar signs and ataxic paraparesis. Repeated MRI examinations revealed a large space occupying lesion in the lower brain stem with patchy contrast enhancement. MRI angiography was unremarkable and CSF had normal cell count but raised protein content. A brainstem tumor was suspected and a course of intravenous glucocorticosteroids was started. No improvement occurred and the patient died of pneumonia 11 weeks after onset. Neuropathology revealed confluent areas of complete or incomplete necrosis with marked

The pattern of peripheral nerve inputs into the dorsal column nuclei, cuneate and gracile, was investigated in the prosimian Galago garnetti. The major findings were, that there is a greater segregation of the inputs from the fingers/hand within the cuneate compared with input form the toes/foot within the gracile. In both nuclei, cell clusters can be identified as cytochrome oxidase dense blotches, reactive also for the activity-dependent enzyme nitric oxide synthase. In the cuneate, cell clusters were apparent as six main cytochrome oxidase/nitric oxide synthase-reactive ovals arranged in a

This report describes an autopsy case of a rare longitudinal brainstem laceration associated with complex basilar skull fractures. The victim was a 40-year-old male who died immediately after falling from a roof (9.2m in height) of a factory onto a concrete floor. The postmortem examination revealed an incomplete ring fracture of the base of the skull with longitudinal fractures of the sphenoid (clivus of the dorsum sellae turcicae) and occipital bones, cerebral contusions in the frontal and temporal poles, a longitudinal brainstem laceration at the posterior median sulcus of the pons accompan

A 15-year-old boy had onset of unilateral facial weakness. A few days later, he experienced mild vertigo, double vision, and headache. Examination confirmed a peripheral right seventh nerve weakness in addition to an internuclear ophthalmoplegia. The neurologic features suggested a pontine glioma. A T2-weighted MRI scan revealed demyelinating lesions in the pons and in several areas of the cerebrum, including the periventricular region. Subsequent history revealed that he had been diagnosed with Lyme arthritis 7 years earlier while living in Connecticut. The radiographic studies favored a diag

This article reviews the neuroradiologic manifestations of acute nonpenetrating head injury. The pathophysiology of the various types of neurotrauma is correlated with the imaging features. Computed tomography (CT) remains the initial imaging modality of choice, allowing rapid diagnosis of the majority of injuries. Magnetic resonance imaging is useful in the subacute and chronic stages (particularly in a patient whose initial CT scan is unremarkable) to assess brainstem and white matter shearing injuries.

Light microscopic immunocytochemistry with monoclonal antibodies recognizing both murine and human light neurofilament proteins (mNF-L and hNF-L) or hNF-L only was used to examine the distribution of NF-L in the CNS of adult mice, normal or transgenic for the human gene. In normal mice, major fiber bundles were immunoreactive to the first antibody, with few exceptions such as the internal capsule, anterior commissure, and corpus callosum. Strong immunoreactivity was also present in the perikarya of motoneurons in the spinal cord and brainstem, as well as in other brainstem nuclei. Faint cell b

The two physiologic components of conscious behaviour, namely arousal (vigilance) and content of consciousness (presence of mind), may be affected differently, depending on the type and distribution of the underlying brain disease. Disturbance of arousal primarily affects wakefulness and awareness and leads to obtundation, stupor and coma. States of reduced arousal are caused by bilateral lesions of the so-called ascending reticular activating system (ARAS), which is situated in the upper brainstem and the paramedian diencephalon. If, on the other hand, cognitive and mnemic function are degrad

Trisomy 21, 18 and 13 are the most common varieties of autosomal trisomy recognized at birth; most of the others lead to spontaneous abortions in the first trimester. Trisomy 9, a rare trisomy, is compatible with life, but, unlike trisomy 21, 18 and 13, the range of manifestations has not been well catalogued. Central nervous system abnormalities have been reported in the majority of cases, usually including a dilated fourth ventricle and malformed cerebellum. The posterior fossa malformation closely resembles the descriptions of the Dandy-Walker malformation leading some to suggest this desig

We present a very rare case of 7 year-old-girl who had a pontine glioma with supratentorial meningeal involvement. She complained severe headache with meningeal irritation. She showed fluctuating cranial nerve impairment of the both abducens and glosopharyngeal nerves but no signs of weakness or facial paresis. She also reported two episodes of generalized convulsion with unconsciousness during admission. MRI disclosed a hypointensity intrinsic brainstem mass with an enhancing exophytic component in the prepontine cistern and a sharp contrast uptake is disclosed in the left-meninges of the sup

We recorded the auditory brainstem responses of rats fed a thiamin-deficient diet. The interpeak latencies between waves I and III, as well as those between waves I and IV, were significantly prolonged from day 24, while the latency of wave I was prolonged on day 26 of the thiamin-deficient diet. These delayed responses were corrected in 2 to 4 days after the initiation of daily intraperitoneal thiamin injections from day 32. The rats that were fed the thiamin-deficient diet, and then sacrificed on day 32, showed a decrease of total thiamin levels in the brain (26% of the level in control rat

1. Chronic treatment of genetically hypertensive and normotensive rats with phencyclidine (PCP) resulted in changes in norepinephrine (NE) concentration in regions of the brain and in the adrenal gland. 2. Chronic PCP treatment resulted in an 18% increase in hypothalamic NE in hypertensive rats and a 20% increase in NE in the medial lower brainstem of normotensive rats. 3. Hypertensive rats also showed a 28% decrease in adrenal NE after PCP treatment.

A case of primary brainstem death in a man with surgically treated cerebellar haemorrhage is reported. Necropsy revealed extensive necrosis confined to the brainstem and cerebellum. The absence of diabetes insipidus and the persistence of electroencephalographic activity were the characteristic clinical features of the case. This differentiates the condition from so-called "whole brain death". Analysis of three further cases with acute vascular lesions of the brainstem or cerebellum, shown at necropsy, revealed that primary brainstem death with prolonged somatic survival can occur in specific

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP), somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) and EEG were recorded sequentially in cat with mass-induced intracranial hypertension in correlation with mass volume, intracranial pressure (ICP), systemic blood pressure (BP) and size of the pupils. 1) As the intracranial pressure was raised by expansion of a supratentorial epidural balloon, suppression of cortical SEP (CSEP) and pupillary abnormality appeared first, EEG, waves IV and III of BAEP and wave III of short latency SEP (SSEP) were suppressed in this order. 2) As far as wave IV of BAEP remained and d

We report the neuropathologic examination of a neonatal case of Turner's syndrome (45,XO). We have found some mild irregularities in the cortical organization, notably in frontal and hippocampal regions. In the frontal cortex such anomalies affected particularly the more superficial layers essentially sparing the migrating process which was largely achieved in its fundamental phases. The hippocampal dentate gyrus appeared abnormally infolded. The cerebellum was hypoplasic and contained three types of abnormalities, at least: abundant paradentate matrix cell nests, a large mass of dysplastic ce
