Ultrasound-guided minimally invasive thread release of carpal tunnel: a cadaveric study.

PURPOSE: Thread release of the carpal tunnel is the most recent of several minimally invasive ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release techniques. The purpose of this article is to provide a step-by-step guide for minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided thread release of the carpal tunnel focused on transecting the transverse carpal ligament with minimal damage to the palmar aponeurosis on anatomical specimens. METHODS: Fifteen ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel thread releases were performed on the wrists of soft-embalmed anatomical specimens, which were dissected immediately after the interventio

Comparative Cadaveric Study and Anatomic Limitations of the Nasofrontal Trephination: A Novel Endoscopic Corridor for Enhanced Exposure of The Odontoid and Occipital Condyle Regions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) serves as the primary minimally invasive route to the ventral craniovertebral junction (CVJ). However, anatomic constraints limit its caudal reach. Multiport endoscopic approaches may complement a standard EEA providing additional reach. This anatomic study evaluates the EEA's anatomic limitations in accessing the CVJ and examines how contralateral nasofrontal trephination (CNT) port may overcome these constraints. METHODS: Thirty-two cadaveric specimens underwent EEA and CNT dissections. Key measurements included the nasoaxia…

Influence of helical pitch and gantry rotation time on image quality and file size in ultrahigh-resolution photon-counting detector CT.

The goal of this experimental study was to quantify the influence of helical pitch and gantry rotation time on image quality and file size in ultrahigh-resolution photon-counting CT (UHR-PCCT). Cervical and lumbar spine, pelvis, and upper legs of two fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens were subjected to nine dose-matched UHR-PCCT scan protocols employing a collimation of 120 × 0.2 mm with varying pitch (0.3/1.0/1.2) and rotation time (0.25/0.5/1.0 s). Image quality was analyzed independently by five radiologists and further substantiated by placing normed regions of interest to record mean signal…

Comprehensive Morphometric Analysis of the Rhomboid Fossa: Implications for Safe Entry Zones in Brainstem Surgery.

BACKGROUND: The rhomboid fossa (RF) is a crucial anatomical region in brainstem surgery as it contains essential structures such as the reticular formation and cranial nerve nuclei. This study aimed to provide a detailed understanding of the complex microsurgical anatomy of the RF, which is vital for the safe execution of neurosurgical procedures. METHODS: Morphometric analysis was conducted on 45 adult human brainstems preserved in 10% formalin. Under 20× magnification, 13 linear measurements were performed using a millimeter graph to identify key anatomical landmarks. RESULTS: The RF measu

Successful use of deceased donors with medically complex kidneys.

The number of patients waiting for kidney transplants from deceased organ donors continues to increase. In this context, non-transplantation of acceptable kidneys is especially regrettable. Here, we review successful transplantation of deceased donor kidneys with anatomic abnormalities, intrinsic kidney diseases, and other ostensibly problematic conditions. These scenarios will be encountered infrequently and, with limited time to decide, uncertainty often results in organ refusal. In general, anatomic abnormalities can be overcome, kidney diseases remit in recipients, and systemic donor condi

The application of flipped learning to a gross anatomy dissection course.

We implemented flipped learning for a gross anatomy dissection course and compared its effects on students' motivation and academic achievement with those of traditional dissection methods. We invited 142 first-year medical students at Chonnam National University Medical School to participate in this study. All participants engaged in traditional dissection methods in the first part of the study and flipped learning in the latter part. Medical students' motivation to learn anatomy by cadaveric dissection was measured using the ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction) model. Th…

Quantitative and qualitative assessment of airborne microorganisms during gross anatomical class and the bacterial and fungal load on formalin-embalmed corpses.

Mold growth on body donations remains an underreported yet serious issue in anatomical teaching. Bacterial and fungal growth pose health risks to lecturers and students, alongside with ethical and aesthetic concerns. However, limited information exists on the presence of bacteria and fungi on body donations and their underlying causes. To investigate the potential impact of airborne germs on body donation contamination, we conducted indoor air measurements before, during, and after our anatomical dissection course, with outdoor measurements serving as a control. Tissue samples from the dissect

Presenting embryologically defined peripancreatic compartments and fusion planes in the search for pancreatic cancer fields.

BACKGROUND: Clinical progress in form of "total mesometrial resection" (TMMR) in cervical cancer and "total mesorectal excision" (TME) in rectal cancer can be traced to a paradigm-shift regarding the extent and range of resection. More significance is bestowed upon embryologically defined borders which define compartments, "morphogenetic units" and "cancer fields", that have to be addressed in order to avoid incomplete tumor resection. We want to transfer this rationale on the pancreas and define such borders for pancreatic compartments. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used 26 unfixed body donors (1

Anatomical study of the motor branches of the tibial nerve and incision design for hyperselective neurectomy.

PURPOSE: Selective tibial neurotomy (STN) is a surgical procedure for treating spastic equinovarus foot. Hyperselective neurectomy (HSN) of tibial nerve is a modified STN procedure, which was rarely discussed. This study aimed to describe the branching patterns of the tibial nerve and propose an optimal surgical incision of HSN for treatment of spastic equinovarus foot. METHODS: Sixteen lower limbs were dissected to determine the various branching patterns of the tibial nerve and categorized according to these branching patterns. The mean distances from the nerve entry points to the tip of fe

Anatomical quantitative evaluation of popliteal artery visualization during medial approach in supine position.

PURPOSE: The medial approach to the popliteal artery has been less commonly used than the posterior approach in surgical repair of traumatic popliteal injury. This study was performed to quantitatively evaluate the visual field of the popliteal artery obtained by staged myotendotomy in the medial approach to the popliteal artery. METHODS: Twenty legs of fresh-frozen adult cadavers were dissected using the medial approach to the popliteal artery. In stage 1, the popliteal artery was exposed between the vastus medialis and sartorius muscles without myotendotomy. In stage 2, the medial head of t…

Does the proximal screw type affect stress and strain in pastern arthrodesis with locking plate in horses?

The implantation of unicortical cortex screws in the proximal hole of locking compression plates (LCP) has been recommended for proximal interphalangeal (PIP) arthrodesis in horses to prevent fractures resulting from stress risers in the proximal phalanx (P1). However, this cortex screw fixation technique may limit efficient dorsal compression of the PIP joint by the plate, potentially affecting the stability of the construct. In this study, we aimed to measure stress and strain in P1 and the plate using an ex vivo model of PIP arthrodesis in horses. We employed various implantation methods an

Contribution to the variability in the coeliac plexus structure and formation.

BACKGROUND: The coeliac plexus is often approached due to the diagnosis and treatment of the intractable pain associated with cancerous or non-cancerous pathology of the pancreas or neighbouring organs. Various methods of coeliac plexus blocks are used and the variations in its structure are causes of the failures of such procedures. METHODS: Twenty human cadavers (17 male, 3 females, age range 30-86 years, without any abdominal pathology) were dissected in the supine position. The abdominal autonomics was studied bilaterally after the incision of the abdominal wall the peritoneal sac was cut…

Origin and Course Cavernous Internal Carotid Artery Branches from the Endoscopic Endonasal Perspective: Cadaveric Study and Analysis Clinical Implications.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic endonasal approaches to treat cavernous sinus lesions require detailed knowledge of the origin, course, and anatomic variations of the branches of the cavernous internal carotid artery (cICA) because inadvertent avulsion can cause intraoperative ICA injury. We aim to study the origin and course of the branches of the cICA from an endoscopic endonasal perspective and relate these branches to surgically relevant anatomic references. METHODS: Sixty sides of 30 formalin-fixed specimens were dissected to identify the origin and course of cICA branches, includin

Coexistence of a retroesophageal right subclavian artery with a left maxillary artery medial to the mandibular nerve.

This case report describes the coexistence of a retroesophageal right subclavian artery and left maxillary artery which passed deep to the mandibular nerve. An 88-year-old woman died of acute heart failure, and the postmortem revealed that the right subclavian artery originated from the aortic arch as the last branch at the level of the fourth thoracic vertebra, then passed between the esophagus and the vertebral column. The artery then ascended right superiorly and passed behind the anterior scalene muscle. The right vertebral artery arose from the retroesophageal right subclavian artery and
