[Recurrent High-grade Astroblastoma Treated with Stereotactic Radiotherapy:A Case Report].

INTRODUCTION: Astroblastoma is a rare, supratentorial glial tumor, occurring predominantly in children and young adults. However, treatment strategies have not yet been established for this rare disease. CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year-old boy presented with headache and nausea. CT and MRI revealed a left frontal mass lesion with slight edema and macrocalcifications. Gross tumor resection was performed. Histological examination found neoplastic cells with astroblastic characteristics, and a striking perivascular array of pseudorosettes. The final diagnosis was high-grade astroblastoma. MRI 13 mon

TORC1 selectively regulates synaptic maturation and input convergence in the developing visual system.

Newly synthesized proteins support the development of functional neural circuits and previous work has suggested that dysregulated translation mediates certain forms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Here, we investigated the role of Target of Rapamycin Complex 1 (TORC1) in synaptic and dendritic development in vivo in the retinotectal system of Xenopus laevis tadpoles. We found that TORC1 signaling regulates dendritic growth and branching and that acute over-activation of TORC1 by Rheb overexpression drove enhanced maturation of excitatory synapses by recruiting AMPA receptors. Interestingly

Disseminated Mycobacterium kansasii infection in a white-tailed deer and implications for public and livestock health.

We document a case of Mycobacterium kansasii, a rare, zoonotic bacterium, in a white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus) in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Grossly, the deer had fibrinous pleuropneumonia with yellow, mineralized nodules scattered throughout the lungs and extending to the pleura. The kidneys were enlarged and had numerous pale foci in the cortex. Microscopically, the pulmonary architecture was replaced by variably sized, multifocal-to-coalescing granulomas with peripheral histiocytes and fewer multinucleate giant cells, and necrotic centers with mineralization and hem

A novel PDCD10 gene mutation in cerebral cavernous malformations: a case report and review of the literature.

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are one of the most common types of vascular malformation, which are featured enlarged and irregular small blood vessels. The cavernous cavities are merely composed of a single layer of endothelial cells and lack other support tissues, such as elastic fibers and smooth muscle, which make them elastic. CCMs may develop in sporadic or familial forms with autosomal dominant inheritance. Mutations have been identified in three genes: KRIT1, MGC4607, and PDCD10. Here, we report a typical case of CCMs in a 44-year-old woman associated with a novel mutation in

[A Case of Gastric Neuroendocrine Carcinoma with Bulky Lymph Node Metastases, Solitary Liver Metastasis, and Left Adrenal Metastasis Curatively Resected after Chemotherapy].

A 68-year-old man presented with generalfatigue due to anemia. Gastrointestinalendoscopy showed a tumor approximately 60mm in diameter in the lesser curvature of the angle of the stomach. Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma was diagnosed by biopsy of a tumor specimen. Computed tomography revealed bulky regional lymph node metastases, solitary liver metastasis, and left adrenal metastasis. After three courses of combined chemotherapy with S-1 and CDDP, the gastric lesion and lymph node metastases shrunk, but the liver metastasis and left adrenal metastasis enlarged. After three courses of combi

F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography image of gastric mucormycosis mimicking advanced gastric cancer: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a very rare fungal infection, and its prognosis is poor. Most common sites of infection are the sinuses, lung, or skin, and gastric involvement is uncommon. The standard antifungal therapy is the treatment of choice for gastric mucormycosis. However, the symptoms of gastric mucormycosis are varied and the early diagnosis is not easy. CASE SUMMARY: I report a 53-year-old alcoholic man, who was admitted due to epigastric pain. The upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a huge ulcer lesion in the stomach, which was suspected to be gastric cancer. F-18 fluorodeoxygl

A patient with pilomatricoma in the parotid region: case report and review of the literature.

Pilomatricoma is a benign skin tumor originating from the matrix cells of the hair follicles. Sometimes, its diagnosis can be difficult, especially in the preauricular region, where in the differential diagnosis, in addition to other dermal and subcutaneous masses, primary and secondary parotid gland tumor lesions must be also considered. A 34-year-old female was referred to our Institution with a right preauricular swelling over 12 months, which enlarged in the last two months. The ultrasonography confirms the origin of the tumoral mass in the skin of the preauricular region and not from the

Follicular lymphoma presenting as scalp mass deformity: Case Report and Review of the literature.

Lymphoma presenting as a scalp mass is a rare but serious medical condition mandating aggressive treatment and neurosurgical intervention. We report a case of 53-year-old male who presented with a large right sided frontal scalp mass and a smaller mass located on the left frontal scalp. After discussion with the patient, it was decided to resect the larger mass for definitive diagnosis. After subtotal resection of the mass, biopsy revealed WHO grade 1 follicular lymphoma (FL), diffuse pattern stage IV. The patient was subsequently treated with 4 grays (Gy) of palliative radiotherapy over 2 fra

An Incarcerated Colon Inguinal Hernia That Perforated into the Scrotum and Exhibited an Air-Fluid Level.

There are few reports of a transverse colon inguinal hernia; furthermore, an inguinal hernia perforating the scrotum is rare. Here we report the case of a 79-year-old man who died after developing an incarcerated colon inguinal hernia that perforated the scrotum and exhibited an air-fluid level. The patient was referred to our hospital in November 2011 with a complaint of inability to move. Physical examination revealed an abnormally enlarged left scrotum and cold extremities. He reported a history of gastric cancer that was surgically treated more than 30 years ago. His white blood cell count

HIV-related Burkitt lymphoma with florid granulomatous reaction: an unusual case with good outcome.

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is a highly aggressive subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL). Lymphoma related granulomatous reaction rarely occurs in sporadic BL. Herein, we describe the first case of HIV related Burkitt lymphoma with florid granulomatous reaction. A 41-year-old HIV-positive Chinese male presented lymphadenopathy in the right cervical region for 3 months. The enlarged lymph node biopsies revealed the presence of prominent granulomas of varying size with Langhans giant cells, leading to the misdiagnosis of tuberculous lymphadenitis in other hospital. Subsequently, the case was sent to

Intestinal neuronal dysplasia type B in adults: a controversial entity.

Intestinal neuronal dysplasia (IND) is a well-defined entity which raises controversy among authors, described as a congenital malformation of gastrointestinal innervation and caused by dysplastic embryonal development of the enteric nervous system. It is potentially associated with mild and chronic gastrointestinal motility disturbances. IND is rarely reported in adults and especially elderly patients. The present study reports on the case of a 71-year-old man suffering from longstanding idiopathic constipation and who was misdiagnosed for more than 60 years, despite several hospital admissio

Medical treatment for adenomyosis and/or adenomyoma.

Uterine adenomyosis and/or adenomyoma is characterized by the presence of heterotopic endometrial glands and stroma within the myometrium, >2.5 mm in depth in the myometrium or more than one microscopic field at 10 times magnification from the endometrium-myometrium junction, and a variable degree of adjacent myometrial hyperplasia, causing globular and cystic enlargement of the myometrium, with some cysts filled with extravasated, hemolyzed red blood cells, and siderophages. Hysterectomy is a "gold standard" and definitive therapy for uterine adenomyosis, and many cases of adenomyosis have be

Discordant genotype-phenotype correlation in familial hyperaldosteronism type III with KCNJ5 gene mutation: a patient report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Familial hyperaldosteronism type III (FH-III) is a rare autosomal dominant disease for which five missense mutations in KCNJ5 have been identified. FH-III has a wide phenotypic variability from spironolactone-responsive hyperaldosteronism to massive adrenal hypertrophy with drug-resistant hypertension. This variation has mainly been attributed to genotype, because, in contrast to other genotypes (G151R, T158A, I157S, and Y152C), (1) FH-III patients with G151E have shown milder phenotype, and (2) G151E-harboring cells were found to have rapid lethality due to much larger sodium cond

The regulation of testicular descent and the effects of cryptorchidism.

The first half of this review examines the boundary between endocrinology and embryonic development, with the aim of highlighting the way hormones and signaling systems regulate the complex morphological changes to enable the intra-abdominal fetal testes to reach the scrotum. The genitoinguinal ligament, or gubernaculum, first enlarges to hold the testis near the groin, and then it develops limb-bud-like properties and migrates across the pubic region to reach the scrotum. Recent advances show key roles for insulin-like hormone 3 in the first step, with androgen and the genitofemoral nerve inv

Platelet-derived growth factor over-expression in retinal progenitors results in abnormal retinal vessel formation.

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) plays an important role in development of the central nervous system, including the retina. Excessive PDGF signaling is associated with proliferative retinal disorders. We reported previously that transgenic mice in which PDGF-B was over-expressed under control of the nestin enhancer, nes/tk-PdgfB-lacZ, exhibited enhanced apoptosis in the developing corpus striatum. These animals display enlarged lateral ventricles after birth as well as behavioral aberrations as adults. Here, we report that in contrast to the relatively mild central nervous system phenoty

Tuberous sclerosis and epilepsy: role of astrocytes.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant disorder that is among the most common genetic causes of epilepsy. Focal brain lesions in TSC, known as cortical tubers, have been implicated in promoting epileptogenesis in TSC. Histological, cellular, and molecular abnormalities in astrocytes are characteristic features of tubers and perituberal cortex, suggesting that astrocyte dysfunction may contribute to the pathophysiology of epilepsy in TSC. Numerous astrocytes can be seen histologically in tubers expressing glial fibrillary acidic and S100 proteins. In some analyses, astrocytes
