PURPOSE: We aimed to correlate left atrial appendage (LAA) morphology with thrombus formation in patients with severe aortic valve stenosis and atrial fibrillation.
METHODS: We analyzed LAA morphology and the prevalence of a thrombus in 231 patients with atrial fibrillation and severe aortic valve stenosis that were referred for pre-interventional CT scan before trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) between 2016 and 2018. In addition, we documented neuro-embolic events depending on the presence of LAA thrombus within a follow-up of 18 months.
RESULTS: The overall distribution of di

A simple and reproducible model of acute haematogenous staphylococcal osteomyelitis is described. Twenty-nine day-old chickens were inoculated intravenously with 10(4)-10(8) viable organisms Staphylococcus aureus per kg body weight and were killed 1-8 days after inoculation. Macroscopic septic foci could be detected within 24 hr of inoculation and were most commonly situated in the metaphyseal region of the proximal tibia and distal femur. Lesions in other organs were not observed. The production of osteomyelitis was dependent on the bacterial inoculum size. It was estimated that 5.5 X 10(5) v

We previously reported on an altered immune-endocrine feedback loop via the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in Obese strain (OS) chickens afflicted with spontaneous autoimmune thyroiditis. These animals are deficient in plasma corticosterone increase after antigenic challenge or application of cytokine-containing conditioned medium of mitogen-stimulated spleen cells (CM). To investigate whether the impaired ability to respond to cytokines with glucocorticoid-increasing factor (GIF) activity, e.g. interleukin 1 (IL 1), is restricted to OS chickens as a model for an organ-specific autoi

Antibiotic resistance plasmids from organisms that had caused serious epidemics, including those responsible for epidemics of chloramphenicol-resistant typhoid fever and dysentery in Central America, were transferred to a strain of Salmonella typhimurium and of Salmonella gallinarum. The virulence and infectivity of these R(+) forms were then compared with the R(-) parent forms in orally inoculated chickens.None of the R(+) forms were more virulent than their R(-) parent forms. The mortality rates they produced were either the same as or less than that of their R(-) parent forms. The mortality

The coccidian Eimeria necatrix infects the mid-intestine of chickens, causing hemorrhage and resulting in significant economic losses. However, there is a lack of a clear method for evaluating the tissue lesions caused by E. necatrix infection. Moreover, the impact of E. necatrix infection on gut microbiota and metabolites remains to be explored. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of E. necatrix infection on the intestinal tissues of chickens and establish a novel histopathological scoring system for evaluating lesion severity. In addition, changes in gut microbiota

Chicken coccidiosis can cause severe enteritis with high mortality, which causes serious economic losses to the global breeding industry each year. The most virulent species is Eimeria tenella (E. tenella), but the infectivity of different E. tenella varies among geographic strains. At present, there are no reports related to the pathogenicity and drug resistance of E. tenella in Yiwu, Zhejiang province, China. A total of 600 fecal samples were collected from 10 farms in Zhejiang province, the overall oocyst prevalence was 54.2% (325/600). The prevalence was significantly higher (P < 0.01) in

Marek's disease virus (MDV), an oncogenic virus belonging to the subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae, causes Marek's disease (MD). Vaccines can control MD but cannot block the viral infection; they are considered imperfect vaccines, which carry the risk of recombination. In this study, six natural recombinant MDV strains were isolated from infected chickens in commercial flocks in China. We sequenced and analysed the genetic characteristics of the isolates (HC/0803, CH/10, SY/1219, DH/1307, DH/1504 and Hrb/1504). We found that the six strains resulted from recombination between the vaccine CVI988/Ris

The diseases caused by Salmonella Gallinarum and S. Pullorum in chickens known as fowl typhoid and pullorum disease, respectively, pose a great threat to the poultry industry mainly in developing countries, since they have already been controlled in the developed ones. These bacteria are very similar at the genomic level but develop distinct host-pathogen relationships with chickens. Therefore, a deep understanding of the molecular mechanisms whereby S. Gallinarum and S. Pullorum interact with the host could lead to the development of new approaches to control and, perhaps, eradicate both dise

Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) H5N1 has been endemic in Egypt since 2006, and there is increasing concern for its potential to become highly transmissible among humans. Infection by HPAIV H5N1 has been described in experimentally challenged birds. However, the pathogenicity of the H5N1 isolated in Egypt has never been reported in naturally infected chickens and ducks. Here we report a 2013 outbreak of HPAIV H5N1 in commercial poultry farms and backyards in Sharkia Province, Egypt. The main symptoms were ecchymosis on the shanks and feet, cyanosis of the comb and wattles, subcu

More than 20 years have now elapsed since technology was developed for producing chickens free of infection with exogenous lymphoid leukosis virus (LLV). However, it is only in recent years that commercial poultry breeders have initiated programmes to reduce the prevalence of infection in their stocks. This review considers advances that make large scale eradication feasible, even though methods for detecting infection and thus breaking the cycle of virus transmission are not completely effective. Congenital transmission of LLV occurs before eggs are incubated. Although chickens infected in th

Salpingitis is a common disease affecting production performance of layer chickens, with pathogenic microbial infections being one of the primary etiological factors. Clinically, Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) can often be simultaneously isolated from cases of oviduct inflammation in laying hens. However, the specific roles played by these two pathogens in the occurrence of salpingitis remain unclear. In this study, IBV and E. coli were inoculated in laying hens via single and mixed infections in order to establish an salpingitis model, and its pathogenesis wa

A 35-d study investigated the impact of dietary supplementation with Arginine (Arg) or branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) of broilers receiving low-protein diets whilst infected with mixed Eimeria species. All birds were given the same starter (d0-10) and finisher (d28-35) diets. The 4 grower diets used were a positive control (PC) with adequate protein (18.5%), a low protein diet (NC;16.5% CP), or the NC supplemented with Arg or BCAA. Supplemental AA was added at 50% above the recommended levels. The treatments were in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, with 4 diets, with or without Eimeria inocul

Marek's disease virus (MDV) is a highly oncogenic alphaherpesvirus that causes immunosuppression, paralysis, and deadly lymphomas in chickens. In infected animals, B cells are efficiently infected and are thought to amplify the virus and transfer it to T cells. MDV subsequently establishes latency in T cells and transforms CD4+ T cells, resulting in fatal lymphomas. Despite many years of research, the exact role of the different B and T cell subsets in MDV pathogenesis remains poorly understood, mostly due to the lack of reverse genetics in chickens. Recently, Ig heavy chain J gene segment kno

Interleukin (IL)-12 and IL-10 are immunoregulatory cytokines with an antagonistic effect on the T-helper (Th)1/Th2 cytokine balance and they provide a functional link between innate resistance and the adaptive immune response. This investigation was conducted to determine the expression of IL-10 and IL-12B mRNA levels in chickens' gut mucosa infected with Eimeria tenella and in sulfachlorpyrazine-sodium treated animals after infection. Broiler chickens were randomly allocated in three groups: healthy untreated control; infected untreated animals and infected, treated with sulfachlorpyrazine so

Unlike mammals, adult avians are able to regenerate cochlear sensory hair cells following injury. Brainstem auditory neurons in chicken nucleus magnocellularis (NM), which receive their sole excitatory afferent input from the cochlea, were examined for evidence of mitosis during ototoxin-induced loss and regeneration of cochlear hair cells. Using tritiated thymidine as a mitotic marker in tissue processed for autoradiography and counterstained with thionin, labeled NM neurons and glia were counted from chickens killed 16 days after gentamicin or saline injections. Newly generated NM neurons we

The emergence and circulation of duck reovirus have caused severe threats to domestic waterfowl production because of the lethal infections they cause in ducks and geese. However, the evolution of circulating duck reoviruses and their replication and pathogenicity in domestic birds have not been fully investigated. In this study, we identified and isolated six duck reoviruses from clinical samples of sick or deceased farmed ducks and geese and sequenced their full genomes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the evolutionary landscape of duck reoviruses and the complex reassortment of these circula

Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) causes an acute and highly contagious infectious disease characterized by severe immunosuppression, causing great economic losses to the poultry industry globally. Over the past 30 years, this disease has been well controlled through vaccination and strict biosafety measures. However, novel variant IBDV strains have emerged in recent years, posing a new threat to the poultry industry. Our previous epidemiological survey showed that few novel variant IBDV strains had been isolated from chickens immunized with the attenuated live vaccine W2512-, suggesting

Avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) causes respiratory and reproductive diseases in birds, including chickens. In the chicken industry, live vaccines against aMPV subtypes A and B, which are the major aMPV subtypes, are widely used to control disease caused by aMPV. In this study, we evaluated the cross protective efficacy of a live aMPV subtype B vaccine administered via 3 different routes (nasal, spray, and oral) against virulent aMPV subtype A in chickens. At 3 wk after vaccination of 1-wk-old specific-pathogen-free chickens, we measured the serological responses. On the same day, we challenged th
