The ABG I uncemented hip prosthesis has demonstrated an unacceptably high failure rate and poor functional outcome in our patients. A prospective review was performed of 38 implanted hips with a mean follow-up of 11 years. Sixteen hips have been revised or are candidates for revision hip surgery, due principally to polyethylene wear and pelvic osteolysis. The purpose of this work was to explore the reductive bioremediation potential of a perchlorate-enriched facultative anaerobic consortium. Rapid perchlorate reduction and bacterial growth were observed up to 1.84 g l(-1) of perchlorate, but not at 3.82 g l(-1) due to the toxicity. Industrial solid waste, Fe(III)/Cr(III) hydroxide, was investigated to assess the capacity for the removal of phosphate from aqueous solution. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were used to model the adsorption equilibrium data. The system follows both isotherms. Adsorption capacity was found to be 6.5 mg/g. Kinetic studies show that the adsorption obeyed second order kinetics. Thermodynamic parameters were evaluated. Overall adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Optimum pH for phosphate adsorption was found to be 4.0. Effect of coexisting anions has also been examined.

This paper describes workplace dermal exposure measurements that were carried out by the Health and Safety Laboratory as part of the EU RISKOFDERM project. Exposure to metalworking fluids (MWFs) was measured at three sites on 25 subjects who were 'mechanically treating solid objects' as they loaded and supervised milling and boring machines and lathes. The parasite Entamoeba histolytica is named for its ability to lyse host tissues. To determine the factors responsible, we have initiated an examination of the contribution of parasite virulence factors and host caspases to cellular destruction by the parasite. Amoebic colitis in C3H/HeJ mice was associated with extensive host apoptosis at sites of E. histolytica invasion. Aim of the present study was the development of a bioassay which enables the detection of genotoxic effects of heavy metal contaminated soils. In the first part of the present study, the data base on metal effects in plant bioassays was extended. Dissolution of stainless steel type 304 in artificial saliva was studied by electrochemical methods, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, and atom absorption spectroscopy. The samples were polarized in the -400 mV (saturated calomel electrode) to -50 mV (saturated calomel electrode) range.
