A study included 100 patients (47 men and 53 women) with cerebral stroke. We revealed significant disordres of cognitive and psychosocial functions (memory, social integration and decision making) in the early stage of rehabilitation. The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) score at baseline (beginning of the early stage of rehabilitation) was 17.3 +/- 7.7. There was a partial recovery of cognitive and psychosocial functions during the rehabilitation that reflected in increasing of FIM score to 25.9 +/- 7.0. Neglect syndrome and severity of lesion (hemiplegia) had a significant negative effe

OBJECTIVE: Two studies sought to examine predictions of the Integrative Cognitive-Affective Therapy (ICAT) model, which views bulimic symptoms in terms of inter-relations between self-concept discrepancies, negative affect, and self-directed coping styles. The present results examine assessment-related predictions of this model.
METHOD: Individuals with bulimic symptoms were compared to noneating disorder control participants in two studies involving central constructs of the ICAT model.
RESULTS: In both studies, bulimic individuals displayed higher levels of self-discrepancy and negative se

Antisocial personality disorder (APD) is associated with increased problem severity in treatment-seeking opioid-dependent patients. Treatment studies have reported mixed results but generally show that patients with APD make progress that is often comparable to drug-dependent patients without the personality disorder. Much of this work is based on secondary analyses of studies evaluating responses to a variety of drug abuse treatment interventions. This study reports on a randomized prospective trial evaluating a behavioral approach for managing opioid-dependent patients with APD. Subjects (N

OBJECTIVE: To examine the usefulness of a self-report questionnaire in the assessment of cue reactivity among women treated for bulimia nervosa.
METHOD: Subjects were women participating in a randomized clinical trial evaluating the additive efficacy of exposure- and non-exposure-based behavioral treatment to a core of cognitive behavior therapy, with follow-up at 6 months post treatment. Complete data were available for 82 women. Cue reactivity was assessed using an adaptation of the Situational Appetite Measure (SAM).
RESULTS: Improvements in cue reactivity occurred over time for the sampl

This paper describes a long-term follow-up of patients with panic disorder who received cognitive behaviour therapy within a randomized controlled trial. Of 89 patients eligible for follow-up, 28 (31.5%) were reassessed 6-8 years after commencement of treatment in the trial. No differences were found between those who were followed up and those lost to follow-up on most baseline measures including measures of panic-related psychopathology, or depression. Outcomes at long-term follow-up were significantly better than baseline measures of panic, avoidance and depression. In this sub-sample the e

Motion Sickness, or kinetosis, is a complex clinical syndrome usually classified according to the environmental situation evoking the symptoms. Among the various forms of motion sickness, air sickness has a significant impact on aircrew readiness and is often a cause for the grounding of aircrew. Unfortunately, standards for clinical testing to accurately predict the sensitivity of each individual to air-sickness are currently lacking. Furthermore, pharmacological prevention is contraindicated for aircrews, whose cognitive tasks involve a high level of vigilance. Therefore, a number of Air For

The emerging research on child physical abuse (CPA) is reviewed herewith. Incidence of CPA may be as high as 11% for adolescents in the US. Child physical abuse survivors vary in their symptom picture of severity and type. Children who have been physically abused may experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, or disruptive behavior disorders. Additionally, developmental disturbances include problems with attachment, social skills, and affect regulation. Chronic abuse is associated with more severe psychopathology. Cognitive processing of the

Chronic pain may have devastating effects on the physical and psychological well being of many patients (Harden, 1999). Most community nurses are in contact with a number of patients with chronic pain and will be asked for advice and recommendations with regards to its management. Chronic neuropathic pain is a complex and sometimes intractable condition that patients will seek help for, from either GPs or from the community nursing teams. This article will examine one neuropathic pain syndrome - post-herpetic neuralgia - and review the evidence base in relation to treatment strategies, in an a

OBJECTIVE: In spite of the increasing interest in out-patient treatment programmes for alcoholics, there still exist only a few experimental studies on this issue. In this still ongoing study the efficacy of different behaviour therapy strategies is to be examined.
METHOD: One hundred and twenty patients were assigned randomly to non-specific supportive therapy or to two forms of behavioural therapy (coping skills training and cognitive therapy). Behavioural treatment comprised 26 weekly sessions; follow-up examinations will take place every 6 months over 2 years.
RESULTS: Patients undergoin

A previous report from the National Institute on Drug Abuse Collaborative Cocaine Treatment Study (P. Crits-Christoph et al., 1999) found relatively superior cocaine and drug use outcomes for individual drug counseling plus group drug counseling compared with other treatments. Using data from that study, the authors examined the relative efficacy of 4 treatments for cocaine dependence on psychosocial and other addiction-associated problems. The 487 patients were randomly assigned to 6 months of treatment with cognitive therapy, supportive-expressive therapy, or individual drug counseling (each

Two experiments were devised to examine the effect of anxiety on memory for threatening information in those with spider phobia. Those with spider phobia, control participants, and those with other phobias were shown video clips of spiders. In the recognition task, participants were asked to state whether they remembered having seen specific video clips of spiders that had been presented to them previously. In the recall task, they were asked to remember and note as much detail as possible about each of a second series of video clips of spiders. Those with spider phobia were no different from

Vitiligo is a progressive condition involving a loss of pigmentation in the skin; it can be disfiguring and no effective treatment or cure exists. Although vitiligo's medical effects have been studied extensively, little attention has been paid to its psychological impact or to the effects of psychological state on the illness itself. To address these issues, the present study examined the effect of cognitive behavioural therapy on coping with vitiligo and adaptation to the negative effects on body image, quality of life and self-esteem in adult patients. The study also examined whether any ps

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the frequency with which subjects with bulimia nervosa (BN) presenting for treatment or follow-up studies had previously received either adequate pharmacologic treatment or cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
METHOD: Semistructured telephone screening of individuals who called in response to advertisements about research studies was used to establish diagnoses and to clarify prior pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatments for BN.
RESULTS: Of 581 women responding, 353 (60.8%) had probable BN. Overall, 61.4% of these subjects had received psychotherapy (96.7

This study evaluates the efficacy of a cognitive treatment for pathological gambling. Five pathological gamblers were treated in a multiple baseline across subjects design. Cognitive correction targeted the erroneous perceptions towards the notion of randomness. Four subjects reported a clinically significant decrease in the urge to gamble, an increase in their perception of control, and no longer met the DSM-IV criteria for pathological gambling. Therapeutic gains were maintained at the 6 month follow-up. Results suggest that cognitive therapy targeting the misconception of the notion of rand

The first aim of this study was to examine the relationship between change of the agoraphobic state during treatment and personality change. The second aim was to examine the potential effect of PD traits on symptom change during and after treatment. Patients (N = 46) suffering from panic disorder with moderate or severe agoraphobia and considering agoraphobia as their main problem were randomly assigned to receive either cognitive therapy or guided mastery therapy in a 6-week inpatient group program. From before to 1 year after the end of treatment, the number of avoidant and dependent traits

While we might debate the role of sport in our culture, its influence is certainly pervasive. Each day millions of Americans engage in some form of competition, training, or physical exercise. Such popularity and the value our culture places on competition have made sport a valid area of psychological inquiry. Within the cognitive behavioral model, sport psychology and, specifically, athletic performance enhancement have experienced vigorous growth over the past two decades. Behavior change strategies familiar to most cognitive behaviorists form the core of virtually all athletic performance e
