Rounded lesions on chest x-ray can often be difficult both to diagnose and to treat. We report a case of a right middle lobe lesion in a young, previously healthy patient who presented with pleurtic chest pain and haemoptysis. His symptoms and chest x-ray appearance were caused by exposure to paraffin oil (kerosene), a substance commonly used for medical as well as domestic purposes.

A 4-month-old 2.5-kg sexually intact female domestic shorthair cat was referred to the teaching hospital because of suspected cholecalciferol intoxication after ingestion of a cholecalciferol-containing rodenticide. At referral, the cat was hypercalcemic, hyperkalemic, and acidotic. Despite management of hypercalcemia and preservation of renal function with physiologic saline solution, furosemide, dopamine, and calcitonin, the cat died, apparently as a result of extensive pulmonary mineralization.

An adult house mouse infected with an alveolar hydatid of Echinococcus multilocularis was trapped in the cellar of an inhabited house in a small village in Auvergne (France) where 3 human cases of alveolar hydatid disease had been diagnosed. The rodent harboured a young hepatic larval cyst. This indicated the presence of infective eggs of the parasite inside the house and outbuildings, an important observation concerning the circulation of the parasite in a domestic environment.

Cryptosporidiosis is a coccidial protozoan initially reported in domestic animals. It is primarily a gastrointestinal organism that does not invade mucosa. It was first described in 1976 in developing countries as an etiology of infantile diarrhea with inanition and malnutrition. Gastrointestinal involvement in patients with AIDS has been increasingly reported. We report a case of combined gastrointestinal and bronchial cryptosporidiosis. Cryptosporidium is an acid-fast organism which was successfully treated with erythromycin.

A domestic shorthair cat examined because of dyspnea was found to have ophthalmoscopic and radiographic changes suggestive of systemic mycosis. The cat died despite antifungal therapy. Histologic examination revealed Blastomyces dermatitidis in the eyes, brain, lungs, stomach, liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, and adrenal glands. The pathologic changes were similar, but more widespread than those typically seen with canine blastomycosis.

We report a case of septic arthritis and bacteremia caused by the Gram-negative rod, Pasteurella multocida. The patient was superficially bitten by her cat, and within two years infection necessitated removal of both of her artificial knee prostheses. P multocida is found in the mouths of cats, dogs, and other domestic animals. The pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of infections caused by this organism, and the question of prophylactic antibiotics are discussed.

This syndrome is seen essentially in a second or later pregnancy in a woman of modest social background, sometimes delivering prematurely and who is forced to perform certain domestic tasks or to wait for her husband before leaving for the place in which delivery has been planned. This type of untimely delivery may cause perineal lesions, vulval haematomas, post-partum haemorrhage, rupture of the umbilical cord or damage to the foetus.

Prion diseases are rare neurodegenerative diseases of humans and animals with a lethal evolution. Animal prion infections, such as chronic wasting disease (CWD) and scrapie (sheep) have shown a pattern of horizontal transmission. CWD is an endemic disease that has been affecting thousands of domestic and wild cervids in US for the last three decades. The mode of contamination is not known, although direct contact between infected and non-infected animals via saliva, urine and feces have been considered. Increasing spread of CWD has raised concerns about the potential transmission to humans and

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is a significant cause of secondary hypertension. While accurate subtyping diagnosis is crucial for determining the treatment strategy for this condition, performing this subtyping remains highly challenging in clinical practice. Therefore, based on current evidence and clinical practice in China, a panel of domestic experts in the field developed this consensus through multiple rounds of Delphi discussions, focusing on the target population, methods, and PA subtyping process.

The present case describes the treatment of a mucoepidermoid carcinoma in a 13-year-old female sterilized European domestic cat, using lung lobectomy and -accompanying mitoxantrone chemotherapy. Six, 14, 19 and 27 months after the initial treatment tomodensitometric and radiographic examinations showed no abnormalities. However, the cat had to be euthanized 27 months after the lung lobectomy due to a soft tissue sarcoma in the interscapular area.

Larvae of the sheep bot fly, Oestrus ovis (Linnaeus, 1758), cause cavitary myiasis in domestic and wild hosts, including man. The complete circular O. ovis mitogenome was assembled, which is 16,584 bp in length and encodes 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and two rRNA genes. The phylogenetic tree of O. ovis and 13 related Oestridae species, with Sarcophaga tuberosa as outgroup, was built.

An 8-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented with a 4- to 5-month history of a progressively growing mass above her anus and an inability to defecate for 3 to 4 wk. External perianal and internal regional masses were subsequently identified and diagnosed as tumors of neuroendocrine origin through surgical excision and histopathologic evaluation. The cat was treated with 2 courses of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Our goal was to determine the presence of neutralizing antibodies against St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) and West Nile virus (WNV) in sera of wild and domestic birds from Buenos Aires City, Argentina. From October 2012 to April 2013, 180 samples were collected and processed by the microneutralization technique. A 7.2% of the sampled birds were seropositive for SLEV, while no seropositive birds for WNV were detected.

A 1-year-old domestic longhair cat presented to our hospital with a 4-month history of progressive exercise intolerance and coughing. Two-dimensional echocardiography confirmed the presence of an intrapericardial cyst and cardiac tamponade. Tamponade was relieved via percutaneous aspiration of the cyst. The cyst was surgically excised 4 days later, and histopathology was consistent with a biliary cyst. The cat's clinical signs completely resolved following surgery.

This work describes the occurrence of the helminth Stephanofilaria spp in ulcerative nodular dermatitis in humans. The ulcers observed presented a variety of sizes and some years of existence. It is believed that the presence of this parasite, which affects several domestic and wild animal species, may harm human health through lesions produced in venous and lymphatic vessels that reduce blood circulation and retard the healing process. The cycle of this parasite in humans is also described.

We report a case of systemic xanthomatosis in a 4-month-old domestic cat. The kitten presented with multiple cutaneous lesions and 'cream tomato soup' coloured blood. Necropsy revealed multiple, whitish, nodular lesions, compatible with xanthomas, on most of the abdominal organs (liver, spleen, kidney, adrenal glands, mesentery and colon). The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination. This is the first report of granulomatous colitis associated with feline xanthomatosis.

The article reviews foreign and domestic literature on the problem of maxillary fibrous dysplasia (MFD) and reports 10 cases of disseminated monoosseous MFD in children aged 3-14 years treated surgically. The scope of the intervention depended on the process location, age of the patients and function-sparing principle. All the operations provided satisfactory cosmetic and functional effect. Their results advocate an individual approach to choice of the scope and kind of surgical intervention.

A two-and-a-half year-old male, domestic shorthaired cat was presented with a history of chronic expiratory dyspnoea, dysphagia and progressive weight loss. Thoracic radiography revealed a caudal mediastinal mass. Surgical exploration confirmed the presence of an abscess in the caudal mediastinum. Despite the good prognosis, euthanasia was performed at the owner's request and post-mortem examination revealed an abscess that had been caused by a grass awn located within.
