Thoracic aortopathy in Marfan syndrome overlaps with mechanisms seen in bicuspid aortic valve disease.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic aortopathy is a serious complication which is more often seen in patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) and patients with a bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) than in individuals with a tricuspid aortic valve (TAV). The identification of common pathological mechanisms leading to aortic complications in non-syndromic and syndromic diseases would significantly improve the field of personalized medicine. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to compare thoracic aortopathy between MFS, BAV, and TAV individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV; n = 36), TAV (n = 23), and MFS (

Factors associated with heartworm preventative use in the golden retriever lifetime study.

INTRODUCTION: Heartworm disease is preventable with use of heartworm preventatives, but the reported prevalence of heartworm preventative use in the United States is low, some estimates falling around 50% of dogs. However, there are very few estimates of prevalence and its associated factors. METHODS: We aimed to estimate prevalence and evaluate factors, including vaccination status, demographics, lifestyle, physical conditions, medications and supplements, and environment and living conditions, for their association with heartworm preventative use in a large dataset from the Golden Retriever

Biomechanical characteristics of different methods of neo-chordal fixation to the papillary muscles.

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Several techniques have been described for neo-chordal fixation to the papillary muscles without any report … cles with incremental loads of 1, 2, and 4 N. We calculated the elongation, the force-strain curve, elasticity, and the maximum tolerated load before neo-chordal failure. RESULTS: The elongation of the neo-chordae was lowest in the simple stitch followed by the figure-of-eight, the pledgeted mattress, and he commercially prefabricated loops (p < .001). Conv …

Biomechanical Considerations of Patching Material for Posterior Scleral Reinforcement Surgery.

PURPOSE: To characterize biomechanical properties of genipin-crosslinked human dura mater as reinforcing material for posterior scleral reinforcement (PSR) and to compare it with crosslinked human sclera. METHODS: Donor dura mater and sclera were crosslinked in the same optimized genipin solution. Resistance to enzyme degradation for both materials were investigated by exposing the materials to accelerated enzyme degrading. Elastic modulus and tensile strength were measured by biomechanics testing equipment. Crosslinked human dura mater was used as reinforcing patch in PSR on 57 adult patholo

Fibrillin-1-regulated miR-122 has a critical role in thoracic aortic aneurysm formation.

Thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA) in Marfan syndrome, caused by fibrillin-1 mutations, are characterized by elevated cytokines and fragmentated elastic laminae in the aortic wall. This study explored whether and how specific fibrillin-1-regulated miRNAs mediate inflammatory cytokine expression and elastic laminae degradation in TAA. miRNA expression profiling at early and late TAA stages using a severe Marfan mouse model (Fbn1mgR/mgR) revealed a spectrum of differentially regulated miRNAs. Bioinformatic analyses predicted the involvement of these miRNAs in inflammatory and extracellular matrix-r

Effects of Acute Vitamin C plus Vitamin E Supplementation on Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage in Runners: A Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial.

Considering the existing controversy over the possible role of acute antioxidant vitamins in reducing exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), this doubled-blind, randomized and controlled trial aimed to determine whether supplementation with vitamins C and E could mitigate the EIMD in endurance-trained runners (n = 18). The exercise protocol involved a warm-up followed by 6 to 8 bouts of 1 km running at 75% maximum heart rate (HRmax). Two hours before the exercise protocol, participants took the supplementation with vitamins or placebo, and immediately afterwards, blood lactate, rate of perceiv

Diseased Filum Terminale as a Cause of Tethered Cord Syndrome in Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: Histopathology, Biomechanics, Clinical Presentation, and Outcome of Filum Excision.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS), a heritable connective tissue disorder, present frequently with symptoms of tethered cord syndrome (TCS) but without a low-lying conus. Currently, surgical treatment of such cases is controversial. Because connective tissue disorder affects fibrous structures, we hypothesized that a diseased filum terminale (FT) might cause TCS in hEDS, justifying surgical transection for treatment. METHODS: We investigated FT pathology, FT biomechanics, clinical presentation, and outcome following FT excision in 78 radiologically occult hED

Experimental evidence of the genetic hypothesis on the etiology of bicuspid aortic valve aortopathy in the hamster model.

Bicuspid aortopathy occurs in approximately 50% of patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), the most prevalent congenital cardiac malformation. Although different molecular players and etiological factors (genetic and hemodynamic) have been suggested to be involved in aortopathy predisposition and progression, clear etiophysiopathological mechanisms of disease are still missing. The isogenic (genetically uniform) hamster (T) strain shows 40% incidence of BAV, but aortic dilatations have not been detected in this model. We have performed comparative anatomical, histological and molecular anal

Machine learning approaches to constructing predictive models of vitamin D deficiency in a hypertensive population: a comparative study.

Objective: Given the association between vitamin D deficiency and risk for cardiovascular disease, we used machine learning approaches to establish a model to predict the probability of deficiency. Determination of serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) provided the best assessment of vitamin D status, but such tests are not always widely available or feasible. Thus, our study established predictive models with high sensitivity to identify patients either unlikely to have vitamin D deficiency or who should undergo 25(OH)D testing. Methods: We collected data from 1002 hypertensive patien

Impact of an alpha helix and a cysteine-cysteine disulfide bond on the resistance of bacterial adhesion pili to stress.

Escherichia coli express adhesion pili that mediate attachment to host cell surfaces and are exposed to body fluids in the urinary and gastr … ), undergo an additional conformational change beyond pilus unwinding, providing significantly more elasticity to their structure than ETEC class 5 pili. Examining structural and steered molecular dynamics simulation data, we find that this difference in class 1 pili subunit behavior originates from an α-helical motif that can unfold when exposed to force. Role of mini-invasive bridge plate in the complex femoral fracture in school going children: A prospective clinical study of 30 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric femoral fracture including supracondylar and subtrochanteric fracture constitutes 1.6% of all paediatric fracture. Elastic nails remain the standard treatment of choice in a midshaft transverse femoral fracture in children weighing less than 45 kg. But in subtrochanteric and spiral femoral fracture, the failure rate of elastic nails are quite high. Hence, in accordance with AAOS guidelines, we treated complex femoral fracture in children with submuscular mini-invasive bridge plate because of its advantage of minimal incision, early union with proper alignment and lower fai

The Comparison of Different Stretching Intensities on the Range of Motion and Muscle Stiffness of the Quadriceps Muscles.

Muscle strain is one of the most frequent sports injuries, having the rectus femoris (RF) muscle as the reported preferred site of quadriceps muscle strain. The decrease muscle stiffness could be an effective RF muscle strain prevention. In recent studies, a high-intensity static stretching intervention decreased passive stiffness, though no study has investigated on the effect of the different static stretching intervention intensities on quadriceps muscle stiffness. The purpose of this study was to investigate the three different quadriceps muscle stiffness intensities (120 vs. 100 vs. 80%).

Biological effects of inhaled hydraulic fracturing sand dust. IV. Pulmonary effects.

Hydraulic fracturing creates fissures in subterranean rock to increase the flow and retrieval of natural gas. Sand ("proppant") in fracking fluid injected into the well bore maintains fissure patency. Fracking sand dust (FSD) is generated during manipulation of sand to prepare the fracking fluid. Containing respirable crystalline silica, FSD could pose hazards similar to those found in work sites where silica inhalation induces lung disease such as silicosis. This study was performed to evaluate the possible toxic effects following inhalation of a FSD (FSD 8) in the lung and airways. Rats were
