Purification of the leaching solution of recycling zinc from the hazardous electric arc furnace dust through an as-bearing jarosite.

Leaching of the hazardous electric arc furnace (EAF) dust containing mainly zinc ferrite and zinc oxide, accompanied by minor concentrations of arsenic compounds, was investigated using sulfuric acid. In order to reach the maximum recovery of zinc, the leaching solution was adjusted to recover both iron and zinc at their maximum possible values. To obtain a high recovery value of zinc and iron, analyzed by AAS, the optimum leaching condition was found to be the temperature of 90 °C, the sulfuric acid concentration of 3 M, the particle size of 75 μm, the S/L ratio of 1:10 g/mL and the leaching

Endogenous Chemerin from PVAT Amplifies Electrical Field-Stimulated Arterial Contraction: Use of the Chemerin Knockout Rat.

Background: We previously reported that the adipokine chemerin, when added exogenously to the isolated rat mesenteric artery, amplified electrical field-stimulated (EFS) contraction. The Chemerin1 antagonist CCX832 alone inhibited EFS-induced contraction in tissues with but not without perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT). These data suggested indirectly that chemerin itself, presumably from the PVAT, facilitated EFS-induced contraction. We created the chemerin KO rat and now test the focused hypothesis that endogenous chemerin amplifies EFS-induced arterial contraction. Methods: The superior me

Ankle dorsiflexors and plantarflexors neuromuscular electrical stimulation training impacts gait kinematics in older adults: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: While ankle muscles, highly affected by aging, are highly implicated in the changes in gait kinematics and involved in the limitation of seniors' mobility, whether neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) training of these muscles could impact gait kinematics in older adults has not been investigated yet. RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the effects of 12 weeks of ankle plantar and dorsiflexors NMES training on strength and gait kinematics in healthy older adults? METHODS: Fourteen older adults (73.6 ± 4.9 years) performed a three-time per week, three months long NMES training of b

Examining the function of the visual word form area with stereo EEG electrical stimulation: A case report of pure alexia.

Functional imaging studies have implicated an area in the left lateral fusiform gyrus, known as the visual word form area (VWFA), in pre-lexical orthographic processing. There are very few studies that have examined the functional specificity of this area in patients with discrete lesions limited to this region. Here we describe a rare opportunity to examine the functional specificity of the VWFA in a patient with stereo EEG (sEEG) electrodes implanted for localization of seizures prior to epilepsy surgery. sEEG offers the opportunity to create a transient and highly localized electrophysiolog

Effectiveness of electrical stimulation on nerve regeneration after crush injury: Comparison between invasive and non-invasive stimulation.

Several studies have investigated the use of invasive and non-invasive stimulation methods to enhance nerve regeneration, and varying degrees of effectiveness have been reported. However, due to the use of different parameters in these studies, a fair comparison between the effectiveness of invasive and non-invasive stimulation methods is not possible. The present study compared the effectiveness of invasive and non-invasive stimulation using similar parameters. Eighteen Sprague Dawley rats were classified into three groups: the iES group stimulated with fully implantable device, the tES group

Impacts of epidural electrical stimulation on Wnt signaling, FAAH, and BDNF following thoracic spinal cord injury in rat.

Electrical stimulation (ES) has been shown to improve some of impairments after spinal cord injury (SCI), but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The Wnt signaling pathways and the endocannabinoid system appear to be modulated in response to SCI. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ES therapy on the activity of canonical/noncanonical Wnt signaling pathways, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and fatty-acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), which regulate endocannabinoids levels. Forty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: (a) Sham, (b) laminectomy + epidural sub

An Electrically Actuated Soft Artificial Muscle Based on a High-Performance Flexible Electrothermal Film and Liquid-Crystal Elastomer.

Liquid-crystal elastomer (LCE)-based soft robots and devices via an electrothermal effect under a low driving voltage have attracted a great deal of attention for their ability on generating larger stress, reversible deformation, and versatile actuation modes. However, electrothermal materials integrated with LCE easily induce the uncertainty of a soft actuator due to the non-uniformity on temperature distribution, inconstant resistance in the deformation process, and slow responsivity after voltage on/off. In this paper, a low-voltage-actuated soft artificial muscle based on LCE and a flexibl

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Reduces Leg Cramps in Patients With Lumbar Degenerative Disorders: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) and lumbar disc herniation (LDH) are often accompanied by frequently occurring leg cramps severely affecting patients' life and sleep quality. Recent evidence suggests that neuromuscular electric stimulation (NMES) of cramp-prone muscles may prevent cramps in lumbar disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two men and women (63 ± 9 years) with LSS and/or LDH suffering from cramps were randomly allocated to four different groups. Unilateral stimulation of the gastrocnemius was applied twice a week over four weeks (3 × 6 × 5 sec stimulation trains at 30

Sensitivity of total body electrical resistance measurements in detecting extracellular volume expansion induced by infusion of NaCl 0.9.

BACKGROUND: Fluid balance management in hospitalized patients is hampered by the limited sensitivity of currently available tools. The aim of this study was to assess the sensitivity of total body electrical resistance (TBER) measurements for the detection of extracellular volume (ECV) expansion. METHODS: TBER and plasma resistivity (ρplasma) were measured during a 4-h infusion of NaCl 0.9% at a rate of 500 mL/h in 23 patients undergoing a diagnostic saline infusion test for primary hyperaldosteronism. Extracellular fluid gain (EFG) was defined as infusion volume minus urinary volume. RESULT

Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma cells are vulnerable to low intensity electric fields delivered by intratumoral modulation therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is a high fatality pediatric brain cancer without effective treatment. The field of electrotherapeutics offers new potential for other forms of glioma but the efficacy of this strategy has not been reported for DIPG. This pilot study evaluated the susceptibility of patient-derived DIPG cells to low intensity electric fields delivered using a developing technology called intratumoral modulation therapy (IMT). METHODS: DIPG cells from autopsy specimens were treated with a custom-designed, in vitro IMT system. Computer-generated electric fiel

Electrical lower esophageal sphincter augmentation in patients with GERD and severe ineffective esophageal motility-a safety and efficacy study.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic fundoplication (LF), even if performed in specialized centers, can be followed by long-term side effects such as dysphagia, gas bloating or inability to belch. Patients with an ineffective esophageal motility (IEM) and concurrent GERD are prone to postoperative dysphagia after LF. The aim of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of electrical lower esophageal sphincter stimulation in patients with IEM and GERD. METHODS: This is a prospective, open-label single center study. Patients with PPI-refractory GERD and ineffective esophageal motility were included

Transcranial focal electrical stimulation via concentric ring electrodes in freely moving cats: Antiepileptogenic and postictal effects.

Transcranial focal electrical stimulation (TFS) via tripolar concentric ring electrodes (TCRE), tripolar TFS, is proposed to treat pharmacoresistant epilepsy. We determined the effect of tripolar TFS on electrical amygdaloid kindling (AK) in freely moving cats. Fifteen cats were bilaterally implanted with electrodes in the amygdala (AM) and prefrontal cortex and assigned to three groups: the control group, which only received AK; the tripolar TFS before AK group, in which TCREs were placed over the vertex and tripolar TFS (300 Hz, 200 μs biphasic equal charge, square pulses) was delivered for

Reduced hybrid/complex N-glycosylation disrupts cardiac electrical signaling and calcium handling in a model of dilated cardiomyopathy.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the third most common cause of heart failure, with ~70% of DCM cases considered idiopathic. We showed recently, through genetic ablation of the MGAT1 gene, which encodes an essential glycosyltransferase (GlcNAcT1), that prevention of cardiomyocyte hybrid/complex N-glycosylation was sufficient to cause DCM that led to heart failure and early death. Our findings are consistent with increasing evidence suggesting a link between aberrant glycosylation and heart diseases of acquired and congenital etiologies. However, the mechanisms by which changes in glycosylation

Implantable cardioverter defibrillators in patients with electrical heart disease and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: data from the German device registry.

BACKGROUND: Implantable cardioverter- defibrillator (ICD) therapy is established for the prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in different entities. However, data from large patient cohorts with electrical heart disease are rare. Therefore, we investigated these patients as well as patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy by analyzing registry data from a multi-center 'real-life' registry. METHODS: The German Device Registry (DEVICE) is a nationwide, prospective registry with one-year follow-up investigating 5450 patients receiving device implantations in 50 German centers. The present a

New electrical impedance methods for the in situ measurement of the complex permittivity of anisotropic skeletal muscle using multipolar needles.

This paper provides a rigorous analysis on the measurement of the permittivity of two-dimensional anisotropic biological tissues such as skeletal muscle using the four-electrode impedance technique. The state-of-the-art technique requires individual electrodes placed at the same depth in contact with the anisotropic material, e.g. using monopolar needles. In this case, the minimum of measurements in different directions needed to estimate the complex permittivity and its anisotropy direction is 3, which translates into 12 monopolar needle insertions (i.e. 3 directions × 4 electrodes in each di

Injury patterns associated with personal mobility devices and electric bicycles: an analysis from an acute general hospital in Singapore.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing popularity of personal mobility devices (PMDs) and electric bicycles (e-bikes) in Singapore has met with growing public concern over safety. Following the passing of the Active Mobility Bill, there remains a gap in the local literature in terms of injury patterns arising from the use of these devices. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on the Singapore National Trauma Registry (SNTR) from the emergency department of an acute hospital from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2016. All patients with injuries related to the use of PMDs and e-bikes were included.

Regional air trapping in acute exacerbation of obstructive lung diseases measured with electrical impedance tomography: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Since bronchial abnormalities often exhibit spatial non-uniformity which may be not correctly assessed by conventional global lung function measures, regional information may help to characterize the disease progress. We hypothesized that regional air trapping during mechanical ventilation could be characterized by regional end-expiratory flow (EEF) derived from electrical impedance tomography (EIT). METHODS: Twenty-five patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD grade 3 or 4) or severe asthma with acute exacerbation were examined prospectively. Patients w
