Alopecia Areata: news on diagnosis, pathogenesis and treatment.

This review focuses on recent changes in the clinical, pathogenetic and therapeutic developments with regards to Alopecia Areata. Some new clinical forms and some phenomena have been described for the first time in recent years. Several phenomena previously observed such as the Renbok, the Koebner and the possibility that an exclamation mark hair can resume its physiological growth have been confirmed. The pathogenetic role of cytotoxic cells is increasingly evident, as well as the deficit of cells and the factors regulating the autoimmune response. The concept of immune privilege of the hair

Rasagiline meta-analysis: a spotlight on clinical safety and adverse events when treating Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Rasagiline (Azilect, AGN 1135) is a selective irreversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B). MAO-B regulates the brain concentrations of important neurotransmitters that are related to movement, emotion, and cognition. Oral rasagiline, as monotherapy or as adjunctive therapy to levodopa, was effective in the symptomatic treatment of adult patients with Parkinson's disease participating in double-blind, placebo-controlled, international studies. AREAS COVERED: This article reviews the reported adverse effects of rasagiline. A MEDLINE search was performed for all articles

Rumination moderates the associations between PTSD and depressive symptoms and risky behaviors in U. S. veterans.

Risky behaviors, including unsafe sex, aggression, rule breaking, self-injury, and dangerous substance use have become a growing issue for U.S. veterans returning from combat deployments. Evidence in nonveteran samples suggests that risky behaviors reflect efforts to cope with and alleviate depressive and/or anxious symptoms, particularly for individuals with poor emotion-regulation skills. These associations have not been studied in veterans. Rumination, or repeated thoughts about negative feelings and past events, is a coping strategy that is associated with several psychopathologies common

Contribution of brain dopamine, serotonin and opioid receptors in the mechanisms of neuroimmunomodulation: evidence from pharmacological analysis.

Neuromediators such as dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT) and neuroopioids are known to be involved in the immune response control. This review has summarized the evidence supporting roles for brain DA (D(1), D(2)), 5-HT (5-HT(1A), 5-HT(2A)) and opioid (mu, delta, kappa) receptor subtypes in regulating immune function. Activation of postsynaptic D(1)- and D(2)-receptors produced immunostimulation while their blockade or activation of presynaptic D(2)-receptors mediated an immunoinhibitory effect. Activation of mu- and delta(1)-opioid receptors also increased the immune reaction intensity. Activat

An historical view of the pineal gland and mental disorders.

Since Classical Antiquity numerous authors have linked the origin of some mental disorders to physical and functional changes in the pineal gland because of its attributed role in humans as the connection between the material and the spiritual world. The pineal organ was seen as a valve-like structure that regulated the flow of animal spirits through the ventricular system, a hypothesis that took on more vigour during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The framework for this theory was "the three cells of the brain", in which the pineal gland was even called the "appendix of thought". The pi

Employing a teen advisory board to adapt an evidence-based HIV/STD intervention for incarcerated African-American adolescent women.

This manuscript assesses priorities and challenges of adolescent females by conducting a meeting with teen advisory board (TAB) members to collect information regarding their lives and experiences pre-, during and post-incarceration in a juvenile detention facility. Multiple themes emerged regarding the impact of incarceration on young African-American females, including experiencing a loss of personal liberties, the importance of making money upon release, unfaithfulness by partners on the 'outside', substance use and lack of control over their environment upon release, including parents, pee

Effect of neuropeptide B on feeding behavior is influenced by endogenous corticotropin-releasing factor activities.

Decrease in food intake is commonly seen in the mammalian response to stress. Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) is a factor that modulates feeding behavior under these stressful conditions. We previously reported that neuropeptide B (NPB) exerts strong synergistic anorectic effects in mice when co-administered with CRF. Tissue distributions of neuropeptide B/W receptor-1 (NPBWR1) and NPB suggest that this neuropeptide system also plays a role in regulating emotion and stress responses. In this study, we examined whether the effects of NPB are altered by endogenous CRFergic tone. During the

Symptom provocation and reduction in patients suffering from spider phobia: an fMRI study on exposure therapy.

Neurofunctional mechanisms underlying cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) are still not clearly understood. This functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study focused on changes in brain activation as a result of one-session CBT in patients suffering from spider phobia. Twenty-six female spider phobics and 25 non-phobic subjects were presented with spider pictures, generally disgust-inducing, generally fear-inducing and affectively neutral scenes in an initial fMRI session. Afterwards, the patients were randomly assigned to either a therapy group (TG) or a waiting list group (WG). The scans

Revision of the non-suicidal self-injury behavior scale for adolescents with mental disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Adolescents are at high risk of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Currently, there is no clinical assessment tool for adolescent NSSI behaviors measurement with global consistency. The Ottawa Self-injury Inventory (OSI) is considered as a relatively comprehensive assessment tool for NSSI, but the questionnaire is discussed with excessive content and timecostly, which may affect the reliability of the measurement results for adolescent. Thus, this study, based on OSI, aims to revise the assessment tool for adolescent with NSSI that is suitable for both clinically and scientifically, r

Feasibility, Acceptability, and Potential Efficacy of a Self-Guided Internet-Delivered Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intervention for Substance Use Disorders: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: People with alcohol and substance use disorders (SUDs) often have underlying difficulties in regulating emotions. Although dialectical behavioral therapy is effective for SUDs, it is often difficult to access. Self-guided, internet-delivered dialectical behavioral therapy (iDBT) allows for expanded availability, but few studies have rigorously evaluated it in individuals with SUDs. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the feasibility, acceptability, and potential efficacy of an iDBT intervention in treatment-seeking adults with SUDs. We hypothesized that iDBT would be feasible, credible

Differential pathways from arts and creative activities to student learning and wellbeing: the roles of belonging, self-efficacy, and self-regulation.

BACKGROUND: Participation in arts and broader creative activities is associated with students' learning, emotional development, and wellbeing, but the psychological processes accompanying these associations remain insufficiently understood. Because all focal variables were observed in the same PISA 2022 cycle, the present study treats the proposed pathways as cross-sectional indirect-association patterns rather than as established temporal or causal mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: This study examines whether school belonging, self-regulation, self-efficacy, and creative thinking show different cross-s

Glycogen depletion in astrocytes induces sex-dimorphic remodeling of astrocytic and synaptic structures with concomitant anxiety-like behaviors and maternal care deficits.

BACKGROUND: Maternal care is an instinctive social behavior indispensable for survival and gene transmission. Postpartum maternal behavior is profoundly affected by mother's emotional state via incompletely elucidated complex mechanisms including metabolic regulation. Brain glycogen, primarily located in astrocytes, is a potent modulator for brain plasticity and provides neuroprotection against bioenergetic insults. The regulation of brain glycogen is of relevance to hormonal control that might be linked to sex-dimorphic responses in mental health. The present study aims to investigate the inv

The indirect association between psychological resilience and prosocial behavior through cognitive reappraisal in Chinese college students.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological resilience is commonly defined as an individual's capacity to maintain stability and engage in constructive adaptation in the face of adversity, and its role in promoting positive developmental outcomes among college students has received increasing attention. Individuals with higher levels of resilience tend to exhibit more balanced emotional responses under stress, which may in turn facilitate their involvement in prosocial actions such as helping, comforting, cooperating, sharing, and donating. Cognitive reappraisal-the cognitive reframing of potentially stressfu

Psychopathological disorders in Prader-Willi syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by chromosomal changes in segment 15q11-q13 including cognitive, mental, and behavioral symptoms, as well as a specific physical phenotype. Both the most common psychopathological changes (intellectual disability, obsessions, impulsivity, autism spectrum disorders, self-injuries) and the main psychiatric comorbidities (affective disorders, psychosis, obsessive-compulsive disorder, autism spectrum disorder) are characterized by a great heterogeneity, which warrants the need for better identification of their frequency and clinical signs. In add

Stress and eating behaviors.

Obesity is a heterogeneous construct that, despite multiple and diverse attempts, has been difficult to treat. One conceptualization gaining media and research attention in recent years is that foods, particularly hyperpalatable (e.g., high-fat, high sugar) ones, may possess addictive qualities. Stress is an important factor in the development of addiction and in addiction relapse, and may contribute to an increased risk for obesity and other metabolic diseases. Uncontrollable stress changes eating patterns and the salience and consumption of hyperpalatable foods; over time, this could lead to
