Dead and sick grey heron chicks with multiple fractures of the leg and wing bones and/or bone deformities have been reported at Besthorpe Nature Reserve heronry in north Nottinghamshire since 1996. Forty-five grey heron carcases were examined, 35 from the Besthorpe colony and 10 from other colonies where bone disease was not known to occur. On the basis of the results of radiological studies, postmortem examinations, peripheral quantitative computed tomography scanning and four-point bending tests, it was concluded that the skeletal abnormalities were probably due to metabolic bone disease.

The objective of this study was to determine whether the prevalence of urinary and anal incontinence in women with benign joint hypermobility syndrome (BJHS) was more than in a control group without this condition. The International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF) and the Manchester Health Questionnaire were sent to 30 patients with benign joint hypermobility syndrome and 30 healthy women without this condition and results were compared. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical details and the operative method used in pituitary tumors by Sir Victor Horsley (1857-1916), which represent the earliest attempts at pituitary surgery.
METHODS: Horsley's case books and postmortem records, archived at the National Hospital, Queen Square, London, were studied for patients with a primary diagnosis of a pituitary tumor admitted during the period 1886 to 1916 who were treated surgically. Contemporary records of nonpituitary cases were also examined to study aspects of Horsley's operative method.

Our study provides an update of the incidence of oesophageal cancer in the West Midland region of England and Wales from 1992-96. A total of 2,671 cases of oesophageal cancer were identified during the 5-year study period, with an age-standardised annual incidence (ASR) of 5.24 per 100,000 (95% CI: 5.02, 5.45). AIM: To estimate the predicted prevalence of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) from the activity of a local ophthalmology department.
METHOD: Using clinic audit data, the local incidence and prevalence of POAG in the registered population of two primary care trusts were calculated.
RESULTS: The local derived prevalence estimate for POAG was 978 per 100 000 people aged 40-89 years (95% CI 753 to 1272) compared with the expected prevalence from a published model of 1230 people per 100 000 people aged 40-89 years.
