Family support and coping with cancer: some determinants and adaptive correlates.

This paper studies the interrelationships between the coping behaviours of cancer patients and perceived amount and adequacy of family support, as well as the issue of how these predict psychosocial adjustment to cancer. Based on questionnaire data from a sample of 169 patients with cancers of various sites, three questions were considered in detail: (1) How might cognitive and behavioural modes of coping with cancer affect perceptions of support provided by one's family in terms of the amount as well as adequacy of various supportive acts? (2) Are coping modes to be considered when explaining

Neurocysticercosis and performance on neuropsychologic tests: a family study in Ecuador.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a common neurologic disorder in developing countries, where it may pose a major public health challenge. Recently, the disorder has become more commonly diagnosed in developed countries as a result of the influx of migrants from countries where the disease is endemic. The clinical syndrome associated with NCC includes neurologic, physical, and functional problems. Since the locus of the infection is mainly the central nervous system, there is a risk of neuropsychologic dysfunction. This study was conducted in Ecuador in a group of 123 subjects (49 males and 74 femal

Patients with Meniére's disease possess IgE reacting with herpes family viruses.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if patients with Meniere's disease possess serum IgE specific for herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1, HSV type 2, Epstein-Barr virus, and/or cytomegalovirus. DESIGN: A modified radioallergosorbent test method was employed wherein each serum sample was processed with recombinant protein A to remove competing non-IgE antibodies, and HSV-1, HSV-2, cytomegalovirus, and Epstein-Barr viral proteins were used as potential antigens. PATIENTS: Ten patients with long-standing active Meniere's disease were tested. Ten age- and gender-matched patients with allergic rhinitis but wi

Home care for children dependent on medical technology: the family perspective.

Children who are dependent on medical technology present unique challenges to families and professionals who attempt to care for them at home. This longitudinal, exploratory study examines the placement threatening crises experienced over an eighteen-month period by four such families in Minnesota. The findings encourage development of a family support model of placement prevention for this population, as opposed to a crisis intervention model.

Mutation analysis of the TSC2 gene in an African-American family.

Tuberous sclerosis complex is an autosomal dominant disorder with loci on chromosome 9q34 (TSC1) and chromosome 16p13.3 (TSC2). The TSC2 gene has been isolated. To date, only a small number of intragenic deletional and point mutations have been detected, almost exclusively in sporadic (no family history) cases. With the exception of a single parent/offspring pair, there have been no published reports of mutations in extended multigenerational chromosome 16-linked TSC2 families. For our TSC studies we ascertained and sampled a four-generation African-American TSC family that shows a high likeli

Family physicians and human rights: a case example from former Yugoslavia.

BACKGROUND: The role of family physicians in the protection of human rights is unclear. The purpose of this article is to explore this role through examination of the specific case of former Yugoslavia. METHODS: In January/February 1993, we investigated medical aspects of human rights abuses as part of a fact-finding mission for the Physicians for Human Rights organization. We used primarily qualitative methods, including direct observation, key informant interviews, focus groups, and key document review. RESULTS: We observed pervasive violations of medical neutrality, as indicated by the sh

Family studies in chromosome 22q11 deletion: further demonstration of phenotypic heterogeneity.

We describe three unrelated, Scottish infants with the velocardiofacial/DiGeorge syndrome, all of whom have deletions of chromosome 22q11. Two of the infants had inherited the deletion from their mothers; the third infant's mother had clinical features although a deletion was not demonstrable in her. One infant had craniosynostosis associated with broad thumbs which may be a separate familial trait; however, at least one other 22q11 deleted individual with craniosynostosis is known and it is possible that craniosynostosis is a rare feature of this deletion syndrome. The second infant is the th

Diagnostic issues in a family with late onset type 2 neurofibromatosis.

We report a family with type 2 neurofibromatosis and late onset tumours. Five members of this family have developed hearing loss late in life, two of whom have only been shown to have the diagnosis in their seventies, and three other obligate gene carriers died undiagnosed at 64, 72, and 78 years of age. A missense mutation at the C-terminal end of the NF2 protein has been identified in this family and segregates with disease. The use of highly polymorphic markers for predictive testing is also shown. There appears to be an autosomal dominant form of spinocerebellar degeneration which is segre

Evaluating a designated family planning clinic within a genitourinary medicine clinic.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate an integrated family planning clinic (FPC) established by genitourinary medicine (GUM) staff held within a GUM women-only clinic (WOC). DESIGN: A retrospective case note review of women attending the FPC during the first year January-December 1992. RESULTS: One hundred and thirteen women, aged 13-41 years, attended the FPC; 45 were new attenders, six had previously tested antibody positive for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), seven were intravenous drug users; 54% had a history of sexually transmitted disease (STD); 17.7% were using no contraception; 32.7% had p

Distribution of the ardA family of antirestriction genes on conjugative plasmids.

The ardA gene of I1 plasmid ColIb-P9 was previously shown to alleviate DNA restriction by type I enzymes and to promote conjugative transmission of the unmodified plasmid to a restricting host. To clarify the ecological role of ardA, its distribution was determined on plasmids from 23 incompatibility groups using hybridization to the coding sequence as an assay. Hybridizing sequences, shown by nucleotide sequencing to have at least 60% identity with ardA, were detected on plasmids belonging to the I complex (IncB, I1 and K), the F complex (IncFV) and the IncN group. The ardA homologues were fo

Evaluating the spectrum concept of schizophrenia in the Roscommon Family Study.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to evaluate whether the pattern of schizophrenia and related disorders in probands and their relatives can be explained by a single underlying continuum of liability to the "schizophrenia spectrum." METHOD: In the epidemiologically based Roscommon Family Study, the authors separately examined--in siblings, parents, and relatives of index and comparison probands--the familial aggregation and coaggregation of five hierarchically defined disorders: schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, schizotypal/paranoid personality disorder, other nonaffective psychoses, and p

Family therapy versus individual therapy for adolescent females with anorexia nervosa.

Behavioral family systems therapy (BFST) was compared with ego-oriented individual therapy (EOIT) in a controlled, random-assignment investigation involving 22 young adolescents with anorexia nervosa. Each adolescent and her parents received approximately 16 months of outpatient therapy along with a common medical and dietary regimen. BFST emphasized parental control over eating and weight gain, coupled with cognitive restructuring and problem-solving communication training. EOIT emphasized building ego strength, adolescent autonomy, and insight into the emotional blocks to eating. BFST produc

Neurological involvement in Worth type endosteal hyperostosis: report of a family.

We present the first Australian family known with autosomal dominant endosteal hyperostosis affecting a mother and her 2 children. Neurological involvement comprising chronic intracranial hypertension and cranial nerve palsies were found in the mother; computerised tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the head demonstrated symmetrical sclerosis of the cranial vault, narrow internal auditory meati and canals, inferior herniation of the cerebellar tonsils into the foramen magnum, and encroachment of occipital bone into the foramen magnum posteriorly. This is the fifth report of significa

Pseudohyperkalaemia associated with hereditary spherocytosis in four members of a family.

Pseudohyperkalaemia was detected in four members of a family all of whom have hereditary spherocytosis with normal white blood cells and platelets counts. The degree of pseudohyperkalaemia was related to the time between sampling and cell separation, and inversely related to the temperature in which the sample was left to stand before cell separation. A fifth member of this family was free from both conditions. The association suggests linkage at a membrane level.

Family stressors in traumatic brain injury: a two-year follow-up.

A review of the literature suggests that psychosocial disability in traumatic brain-injured (TBI) individuals and distress in families continues long after the initial injury. In this study the relationship of family stress to a number of factors was studied longitudinally. Caregivers of 51 TBI inpatients were interviewed at rehabilitation admission and by phone at 6, 12, and 24 months postinjury. Caregivers' most common complaints about their relatives were a lack of involvement in leisure activities, fatigue, slowness, and forgetfulness. Increasingly severe temper outbursts, anxiety, and sel

Bone marrow transplantation: support of the patient and his/her family.

Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) has evolved over the last decade from a controversial research procedure to a standard therapeutic modality, becoming an important innovative treatment for hematological malignancies, solid tumors, immunodeficiency diseases and metabolic disorders. Historically in research and clinical literature, the BMT procedure is divided into several stages, each accompanied by particular emotional tones and psychological issues. In providing care for transplant recipients, donors, and families, caregivers must be familiar with the psychological stages of the procedure, t

Coexpression of May-Hegglin anomaly and hereditary nephritis in a family.

In three generations of a family investigation for coexpression of May-Hegglin anomaly and hereditary nephritis was done by routine studies, as well as electron microscopy of renal tissue and blood cells, platelet aggregation studies, audiograms, and ophthalmologic evaluations. The propositus had typical May-Hegglin anomaly and a mild form of hereditary nephritis. One son had May-Hegglin anomaly and possible hereditary nephritis, and one daughter had May-Hegglin anomaly and probable hereditary nephritis. A grandson had May-Hegglin anomaly but no evidence of hereditary nephritis at age 23. The
