Prognostic impact of bystander-patient relationship and age in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Bystander presence improves outcomes after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Although bystander type is reportedly associated with neurological outcomes, the potential modifying effect of age on this association remains uncertain. METHODS: Using the All-Japan Utstein Registry, we included adults with witnessed OHCA between 2005 and 2023. Patients were categorized into 3 groups according to the bystander-patient relationship (family members, friends and colleagues, and passersby) and further divided into 4 age categories (18-69, 70-79, 80-89, and ≥90 years). The primary

A systematic review and meta-synthesis examining the relationship between virtual communication and mental health outcomes of family members of intensive care unit patients.

IntroductionEffective communication between family members, intensive care unit (ICU) patients, and healthcare providers is essential for easing family member's distress. We sought to understand how virtual communication patterns between family members, ICU patients, and healthcare providers are related to the mental health outcomes of family members.MethodsWe systematically searched CINAHL and PubMed for peer-reviewed studies published between January 2015 and August 2024 that documented virtual communication with the family member of an adult ICU patient (e.g., phone calls, video calls) and

Effect size estimates of risk factors for post-intensive care syndrome-family: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Families of patients admitted to ICUs often experience post-intensive care syndrome-family, and previous studies have reported several possible risk factors. However, to date, no meta-analyses have been conducted on the numerous risk factors associated with the development of post-intensive care syndrome-family and how strongly these factors are in association with post-intensive care syndrome-family. OBJECTIVES: To identify risk factors for post-intensive care syndrome-family and determine the effect size of individual risk factors. METHODS: This systematic review used MEDLINE,

Familial autoimmunity in pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and its associations with the severity of clinical presentation at diabetes diagnosis and with coexisting autoimmunity.

PURPOSE: The aim was to evaluate the impact of familial autoimmunity on the age and severity of type 1 diabetes (T1D) presentation and on the coexistence of other autoimmune diseases. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the medical records of 121 children/adolescents (male: 63) followed in our Diabetic Clinic from 2002 to 2016. RESULTS: Seventy-six patients (62.8%) had at least one relative with an autoimmune disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis (49.5%) and T1D (22.3%) being the commonest. Children with familial autoimmunity were younger at T1D diagnosis (mean age ± SD) (6.766 ± 3.75). Median

Colorectal cancer risk in families with Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome increased.

OBJECTIVE: Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHDS) is an inherited tumour syndrome characterised by three major symptoms: lung cysts with spontaneous pneumothorax, fibrofolliculoma and renal cell cancer. The first family with this syndrome was described in 1975 and one of its members presented with adenomatous colon polyps and colorectal cancer. Since then, it has been a matter of debate whether colorectal cancer is indeed part of the BHDS spectrum and if regular screening should be recommended. DESIGN: We analysed the frequency of colorectal cancer in a large sample of BHDS families. Clinical data we

Differences between familial and sporadic cases of vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Most cases of vitiligo are sporadic, but about 10-36% of the patients have positive family history. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to describe differences between familial and sporadic cases of vitiligo. METHODS: A total of 186 adult vitiligo patients were examined, in 173 of whom the level of thyroid peroxidase antibodies, gastric parietal cell antibodies (PCA), antinuclear antibodies (ANA), anti-adrenal cortex antibodies and rheumatoid factor in blood was measured. All patients were divided in two groups: the cases with positive family history of vitiligo (51) and the spor

Family history of non-hematologic cancers among Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia patients: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the epidemiology and etiology of Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia (WM). Despite several studies of the relation between family history and B-cell disorders and WM, family history of non-hematologic cancers has not been systematically investigated. We thus examined associations of family history of breast, colorectal, lung, ovarian, and prostate cancers with WM. METHODS: All probands aged 20-79 years with bone marrow biopsy-confirmed diagnosis of WM between May 1, 1999 and January 1, 2010 at the Bing Center for Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia were eligible for incl

Contraceptive practices in Armenia: Panel evaluation of an Information-Education-Communication Campaign.

Induced abortion remains the major form of birth control among Armenian women, contributing to their excess mortality and preventable morbidity. Reliance on abortion is attributed to limited access to information concerning modern methods of contraception and to widely held misinformation among women regarding family planning and reproductive health. Based on the Steps to Behavior Change model, the Green Path Campaign for Family Health, an information-education-communication (IEC) campaign, was launched in June 2000. This multimedia campaign promoted greater awareness, knowledge, acceptance, a

Familial multiple myeloma: a family study and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of multiple myeloma (MM) remains obscure, although reports of familial clustering have implicated both a host susceptibility factor and environmental effects. Here we describe the medical histories of members of a family prone to MM. METHODS: We developed a pedigree for an MM-prone family by using information obtained from a questionnaire. Protein immunoelectrophoresis of serum and urine from the proband and from 19 family members was performed to detect monoclonal immunoproteins. Peripheral blood obtained from the proband and from five relatives was subjected to stan

Familial risk, abortion and their interactive effect on the risk of breast cancer--a combined analysis of six case-control studies.

In a previous study in France, we reported that the relative risk of breast cancer associated with a family history of breast cancer was higher in those subjects with a history of abortions. The present study was undertaken to check the existence of this interaction in other studies and to investigate whether the interaction is modified by the time at which abortions occur. Data were obtained from six case-control studies in France, Australia and Russia, with information on family history of breast cancer and abortion for 2693 breast cancer cases and 3493 controls. The interaction effect was e

Interaction between genetic and environmental risk factors for Alzheimer's disease: a reanalysis of case-control studies.

To study the interaction among genetic and environmental risk factors, a reanalysis of case-control studies of Alzheimer's disease (AD) was conducted based on the original data of all studies carried out to January 1, 1990. Seven studies were included in the present analysis, comprising a total of 814 AD patients and 894 control subjects. When comparing those with a positive and negative family history of dementia, similar odds ratio were found for late maternal age [1.7; 95% confidence interval (0.6-4.8) vs. 2.0 (1.1-3.5)], head trauma [1.7 (0.7-4.2) vs. 1.9 (1.1-3.2)], and history of depress

Familial clustering of colon, breast, uterine, and ovarian cancers as assessed by family history.

The aggregation of colon, endometrial, ovarian, and possibly breast cancers in families has been described as a "cancer family syndrome" (now called Lynch syndrome II). To determine if the familial clustering of these malignancies was more common in women with cancer than without, we analyzed data from the Iowa Women's Health Study (IWHS), a population-based sample of 41,837 women aged 55-69 years. Self-reported information was collected on history of colon, uterine, ovarian, and breast cancers in female first-degree relatives. A family history of cancer of the breast (odds ratio [OR] = 1.4),

Professional and family caregivers' perceptions of death literacy in end-of-life home care: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The growing prevalence of chronic diseases and population ageing have increased the need for end-of-life care, particularly in home settings. Death literacy, encompassing knowledge, skills, attitudes and emotional preparedness related to death and dying, is recognised as an important component of quality end-of-life care. However, little is known about caregivers' perceptions of death literacy in the Iranian context. OBJECTIVE: To explore the perceptions of professional and family caregivers regarding death literacy in home-based end-of-life care. METHODS: This qualitative study

'Something Was Missing': A Qualitative Study of Parents' Expectations in Weight-Related Health Care for Children.

AIM: To explore how parents perceive health care encounters related to their child's higher weight and to interpret these experiences within the broader societal context shaped by cultural norms and representations. DESIGN: A qualitative design was employed using semi-structured interviews to capture parents' experiences. The study was informed by a conceptual framework that views weight as both a personal and socially constructed phenomenon. METHODS: Eighteen parents from Finland were interviewed between May 2022 and June 2023. The data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis to ide
