Neonatal severe hyperparathyroidism (NSHPT) is a rare genetic disorder that presents within the first six months of life. We present the case report of a male child who presented to us in the first month of his life with symptoms of lethargy, constipation, and reluctance to feed. One sibling of the child had died earlier with similar symptoms in the first six months of life. Upon physical examination, the child was lethargic, dehydrated, had bradycardia with hyperreflexia. Serum electrolyte analysis showed hypercalcaemia and hypophosphataemia. Further workup revealed elevated serum parathyroid

Viral reactivation or infections are common complications after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, especially in haploidentical transplantation. Here, we presented a young patient with Ph-like acute lymphoblastic leukemia who suffered Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) encephalitis and disseminated adenovirus (ADV) infection after haploidentical peripheral blood (PB) stem cell transplantation. The patient was a 16-year-old boy and received PB stem cells from his HLA-haploidentical matched father. On day +44 after transplantation, he had viremia with cytomegalovirus, and EBV was diagnose

Varicocele is defined as an abnormal dilation and tortuosity of the internal spermatic veins found within the pampiniform plexus. It is a common finding in adolescents and adult men alike, however its diagnosis in the adolescent population poses different dilemmas in regard to indications for treatment than in adults. Failed Paternity is a clear-cut indication for repair in adult men attempting to father children. In adolescents, the physicians, family and patients must consider potential for future fertility problems which may or may not actually become of concern. Assessing the degree of neg

Malocclusions are changes in the development of craniofacial structures of high prevalence. Associated risk factors are diverse and nutritional and non-nutritional suction habits are the most reported. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of malocclusions in the mixed dentition and to study possible association with practices of breastfeeding and suction habits among Brazilian schoolchildren. A cross-sectional study involving a sample of 664 6-year-old children and their families was carried out. Data collection was done through interviews with mothers in the homes and oral exa

Recessively inherited limb girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) type 2A is the most common LGMD worldwide. Here, we report the first single missense variant in CAPN3 causing dominantly inherited calpainopathy. A 43-year-old proband, his father and two sons were heterozygous for a c.1715G>C p.(Arg572Pro) variant in CAPN3. Affected family members had at least three of the following; muscle pain, a LGMD2A pattern of muscle weakness and wasting, muscle fat replacement on magnetic resonance imaging, myopathic muscle biopsy, and elevated creatine kinase. Total calpain 3 protein expression was 4 ± 3% of

BACKGROUND: Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) is a familial cancer syndrome often associated with germline mutations in the CDH1 gene. However, the frequency of CDH1 mutations is low in patients with HDGC in East Asian countries. Herein, we report three cases of HDGC harboring a missense CDH1 variant, c.1679C>G, from a single Japanese family.
CASE SUMMARY: A 26-year-old female (Case 1) and a 51-year-old male (father of Case 1), who had a strong family history of gastric cancer, were diagnosed with advanced diffuse gastric cancer. After genetic counselling, a 25-year-old younger brother

In recent years, a new focus of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease hypothesis has emerged examining the potential role that paternal health may play in embryo development, fetal growth and long-term offspring health. While the association between male health and sperm quality has been studied in detail, our understanding of the long-term paternal effects on offspring health remains limited. As with studies aimed at understanding maternal programming, animal models are an essential tool with which to define the underlying mechanisms linking paternal health to post-fertilisation dev

The couple from this clinical case consisted of a 55 years old male with an obstructive interval of 25 years post vasectomy, and a 38 years old female partner. Both partners had normal results in infertility workup. Five mature oocytes were injected with motile spermatozoa showing morphological alterations, obtained by percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration. Four oocytes fertilized, and three embryos were transferred with assisted hatching on day three of development, of which one was a high-quality embryo. A clinical pregnancy was confirmed by the detection of two gestational sacs with foet

The Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) is a rare disorder characterized by heterogeneous clinical features, including growth retardation, typical facial dysmorphisms, and body asymmetry. Genetic alterations causative of SRS mostly affect imprinted genes located on chromosomes 7 or 11. Hypomethylation of the Imprinting Center 1 (IC1) of the chromosome 11p15.5 is the most common cause of SRS, while the Imprinting Center 2 (IC2) has been more rarely involved. Specifically, maternally inherited 11p15.5 deletions including the IC2 have been associated with the Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS), while pa
